findings on Planets October 1a-3 and October 1a-2

(Extracts from the mission logs of the USS Magpie.)

Details of October 1a-2 survey.

Encountered a class Y (Demon class planet) Upon arrival we deemed that the planet would not be safe for an away team landing.

Surface temperatures came as high as 800 degrees. Constant storms were detected moving at very high velocities. All tactical simulations showed that survival on such a planet would be entirely impossible, even if guarded by a radiation suit.

Metallurgical analysis yielded one anomaly. A large section of what we believe to be a hull fragment. The metal was detected nowhere else on the planet.

Radiation readings were taken on the planet, and shown to also be within a lethal range.

Little else of interest cane be gathered at this point.

Details of October 1a-3 survey.

We found a class Y Planet, with a class M moon in orbit.

The class Y planet had a vastly toxic atmoshpere, otherwise little stood out to us as worth exploring at that moment in time.

The class M moon yielded far superior results.

Upon landing it was found that the environment was very cold, with very few signs of life. Trees were found upon the surface of the planet in great number. Samples of the local flora have been taken an analysed. The life on this planet as far as we can tell was wiped out due to a planetary cataclysm.

Upon sending a team to the surface a small abandoned time capsule was found. It was estimated that this was over 50,000 years old, and had perhaps been built before the system had split from it's own galaxy.

Scans of the installation are currently not yielding much. The technology is not familiar and will take some time to understand. However, a holographic program was recovered from the ruin.

The Aliens seem to have been insectoid in form. They bore an exoskeleton with three finger like appendages on each hand, the creatures appeared squat and hunched with compound eyes.

The hologram introduced itself as Kzzokl. And introduced his species as the X'lith. We were sadly unable to see any of the X'lith in person, as they had abandoned the planet a long time ago after an ice age set in. Kzzokl was kind enough to show us the route that they took, and we believe the map we were given could contribute to our knowledge of their galaxy.

We have recovered a copy of this hologram, and will attempt to send it to DS13 as soon as possible.

In addition to the hologram device that referred to itself as Kzzokl, constructed as a memorial safe guard of memories to the X'lith, I was able to obtain a number of samples based on a much more personal endeavor on the surface. With the disappointment of not being able to beam down directly to either of the planetary bodies that were visited, I was extremely relived at the class M moon inside the orbit of October -1a-3. Initially while the main away party, being made up of Captain Drexia, Lieutenant Commander Collingwood and Lieutenant Commander Sedai, ventured North towards the structure found to contain the holographic time capsule, I took the time to move Eastern from the beam in point, giving me the access to a rather remote section of the icy surface. Though as it was mentioned, I'm not native to Andoria, but the environment was comforting and did remind me of certain area's visited on the Andorian home world. This is where I spotted a large open clearing that would be ample enough for a large sensor band scan of the surface and it's contents, conducted by Lieutenant Commander Sedai.

The trees present on the surface contained traces of an unknown DNA fiber strand configuration, something of which I am looking forward to investigating and testing on the samples collected once I return to Deep Space Thirteen, and seemed to be made from hollow structural implements bonding themselves with the almost alloy feeling bark. With next to no further flora on immediate show, it appears to be a clear case of survival via adaptation to the conditions forced upon the plant life. With the exceptional sturdy-ness of bark coating, I made sure to take numerous samples form various sources and in due time believe it could be possible to replicate the attributes to sustaining the plant in growth successfully. The rock formations appeared to be oddly shaped to be completely natural, as mentioned by the members of the away team, however various shards of thick rock-ice were scattered throughout the environment, perhaps hinting at possible environmental weathering causing the decay from the larger structures - though it is worth noting that tree/plant life appeared undamaged, presumably due to the armour-like bark coating.

The experience has allowed me to collect a number of rock samples and study what the environment effects the conditions present, and just what force they would have on more common federation materials, which if successful, could even push forward aid in constructing materials suitable for further more in depth exploration of the October -1a system as it stands, though this is to be pushed through the various science divisions and ultimately, could prove ineffective compared to more standard means and equipment.

  • Ens. Kermit believes that that the plating may be capable of protecting sensitive technology from polaric radiation. Based on the context of the find, this seems likely.
  • LtC. Sedai posited that the fields surrounding the pods may provide protection against polaric radiation in addition to/instead of the plating.
  • Ens. Kermit suggested transporting the entire device onto a ship as an alternative to cutting a sample. This proposition seems viable, requiring only a specially set-up transporter and sufficient buffering space. Setting up an appropriate transporter would require an estimated 24 personnel-hours, and transporting the entire device would require an estimated 3.8*1018 bytes of buffering space.

Katriel does the same and blows out a visible breath.

Esahr more or less immediately takes three steps to the side after beaming in

Kermit looks around and starts to sort of wander over to the closest tree.

Esahr: Huh

Katriel clasps her hands behind her back and watches patiently. "So this is your investigation, Ensign. Whatever you need to look into."

Kermit touches the tree, then seems to be reminded that he actually has a reason for being here, "Right." and out comes a tricorder.

Esahr holds his hand to his brow to shadw his eyes and peers out at the snowy landscape.

Kermit scans the environment with a tricorder.

Kermit reads the atmosphere analysis, "So, other than the cold, I'm not seeing much that would be an issue with setting up a colony here."

Esahr: So the atmosphere does protect the moon.

Katriel | Well. How about we moderate it to maybe 50% penetration.

Kermit: {Question. Other than causing explosions in voyager episodes, what exactly does polaric radiation actually do?}

Esahr looks around some more, taking a few moments to eye the trees with mild curiosity and/or suspicion.

Katriel: ((I picked it cause there was barely any information on it. I liked the 'interferes with sensor' info. I assumed it could get extended out to 'doesn't play nice with electronic equipment in general'.)

Kermit: {I got the impression that as long as you didn't mess with it, it wouldn't do much other than screw with sensors.}

Kermit: {Ah, okay. So definitely not like...killing things or making people sick.}

Katriel: ((Yeah, we're keeping it primarily an anti-tech radiation issue. So mostly you have to overcome ... that.))

Katriel: ((In this case, Krikaya is afflicted when the other planets aren't, cause it's closest to the sun.))

Kermit looks up at the sky, then around at the trees, "The plants seem to have done pretty well, despite the cold."

Kermit enters data into his tricorder.

Esahr: You know who would be useful right now?

Esahr: A xenobiologist.

Kermit smirks, "Know any good ones?"

Esahr: Not anymore.

Esahr: But, if I had any, I'd bet latinum these trees are metabolising polaric energy right now.

Kermit: "I wonder if there's some way we could use that to our advantage. Construction using the bark, maybe?"

Katriel glances upwards at the tree as she continues on.

Kermit nods, "Alright. Lets go have a look?" extending his arm towards the cave.

Katriel: After you.

Kermit looks around, a little astonished at the devices placed around the interior.

Esahr stops at the cave threshold and just stares at the foreign technology for a little while.

Kermit scans the environment with a tricorder.

Katriel peers around at the hanging memory tube type things, but she seems relatively unimpressed.

Kermit uses his tricorder to try to determine the power source, "Amazing that this is still...intact after all this time."

Katriel | Erm. It's ... maybe below ground. The powersource.

Esahr looks around a bit more, then approaches one of the capsules hanging from the ceiling.

Esahr scans the environment with a tricorder.

Kermit calls over to Katriel, "What did you need to do to activate the recording?"

Katriel 's tone is dry. "Four people."

Esahr scans the environment with a tricorder.

Kermit smirks, "I see...I'll just have to read the report, then, I guess. Did it...tell you anything of relevance?"

Katriel frowns a bit, tilting her head back and trying to recall. "I don't remember any thing particularly enlightening that pertained to the moon itself. Just the er, hologram speaking about its

Katriel: impending extinction and desire to preserve their culture."

Esahr unshoulders his backpack and sets it down, then detaches the pack's lower segment and begins assembling it into a stationary diagnostic station.

Kermit Alright then." he eyes Esahr's station, "Find anything interesting?

Katriel eyes Esahr at work.

Esahr: The capsules are all held within something like stasis fields. The tricorder can't pierce them. Hopefully that means they aren't some sort of defensive measure.

Esahr: Everything else is plated with some sort of material--probably an alloy. It's pretty hard and probably resistant to most forms of radiation. I'll have to wait for the station to finish its work.

Esahr: Again, the tricorder can't seem to--

Esahr breaks off when the diagnostic station beeps at him.

Kermit looks at the capsules and has a sort of epiphany, "The radiation! It hasn't affected any of this technology. If we can figure out why, it might lead us to a means to safely set up a colony here."

Esahr taps away at the station's control panel a little while, then on his tricorder, then packs the station back up.

Kermit scans the environment with a tricorder.

Katriel raises an eyebrow, but remains quiet.

Esahr nods

Esahr: Yep, this plating is pretty dense and complex. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this cave is more irradiated than the rest of the planet, because radiation is probably just bouncing off all this.

Kermit kneels down, pulls off a glove, and touches the platform with his bare hand, "Would you mind taking a sample of the coating, to bring back with us?"

Esahr: I'll need a mechanical saw to do that.

Esahr double-checks his diagnostic readings.

Esahr: Yeah, if I try to cut this with energy, the strength needed will just collapse the complex structure, which I think is an important part of how it works.

Esahr: So either we cut off a chunk the size of your head, or we use a mechanical saw.

Kermit looks up at Esahr, "This...might be the key to setting up a successful colony here. Do you have any other way of getting a detailed enough scan that would allow us to duplicate the material?"

Kermit replaces his glove and stands back up to face Esahr.

Esahr shakes his head.

Esahr: Not me. You'll need some sort of...

Esahr: scanning... scientist.

Kermit paces around a little, thinking..."Don't suppose we could cut out a chunk with a phaser..."

Esahr: Size of your head, if you want to.

Esahr: If you want to get a good picture of it... well, most particle and radiation scanners will only be able to conduct surface scans, and we need something deeper. So we need a particle, or something...

Esahr: ... that will penetrate further into the structure, and then return, which could be difficult.

Esahr: ... so you want a particle physicist.

Esahr: ... to tell me how to build the scanner you want.

Kermit shakes his head, frustrated, stepping back towards the entrance, to look at the devices as a whole.

Kermit: What about the transporter on the runabout?

Kermit reconsiders, "Or if we came back with a full starship and a cargo transporter. Any chance we could beam out the whole structure?"

Esahr: A personnel transporter will have higher image resolution.

Esahr: Maybe hook up a personnel transport computer to a cargo pad, yeah.

Esahr looks around at the cave.

Esahr: Depending on how big the whole thing is, it could take a lot of storage.

Esahr scans with his tricorder to see how deep down the tech goes.

Esahr: Hmm, pretty big. You'll need a healthy chunk of a typical ship's memory to store it.

Kermit ponders for a moment, then turns to Katriel, now, "The Kindred is designed to handle large scale rescue missions, isn't it? Any chance they'd be willing to take a trip out here and give us a hand?

Katriel inclines her head. "Possibly, but I'm sure you could put in a request for an actual Task Force ship to give you a hand with this as well."

Esahr: Just bear in mind that there's always the slim risk of a transporter mishap... and foreign technology does increase that risk. Those stasis fields could be a problem.

Kermit nods, "Alright. I think that's gonna be our best bet then. If we can get it out without destroying it, it can still be studied, and we'll, hopefully, be able to duplicate the shielding alloy."

Katriel glances up towards the capsules. "Have we considered perhaps that maybe it's the stasis fields that are the solution?"

Esahr: If we're heading back to the Milky Way anyways, we might as well just grab a daleite saw.

Kermit nods again, "Fair enough. Get a real science/engineering team out here, they might be able to do all of that with less work."

Katriel inclines her head. "Indeed. In either case, you've done the footwork. You can request a team to return within the timeframe and make sense of their results."

Kermit grins, "Perfect!" and steps back outside. To Katriel, "Anything else you think it might be helpful to take a look at? Or ready to head back?"

Katriel shrugs lightly. "If you think you have enough, then I'm satisfied to return."

Kermit takes a last look around, then nods to the others before tapping his combadge to request transport back to the runabout.
