SUBJECT: Derelict Vessel Report

For those concerned,

On stardate 91714.7 Commander T’irin, Lieutenant Commander Osiangli, Lieutenant Commander Sedai and I conducted a through examination of the Pariah Derelict's main engineering room. Below is a detailed review of our findings.

After the initial recon of the vessel by members of the Fleet some months earlier the Derelict was transported back to Deep Space 13. Upon arrival engineering teams worked to adapt Federation power and get primary systems back online. Those efforts were largely successful. An overview of the main systems is as follows.

System Overview

  • Life Support: Online
  • Engine Core: Offline
  • Propulsion: Stand-by
  • Artificial Gravity: Online
  • Environmental Systems: Online
  • [untranslatable] Collectors: Offline

Detailed System Information

Engine Core:
The engine core housing itself was located behind a powered door in the main engineering space. I use core loosely here, as only the housing structures remained. The engine itself was removed at an unknown date. Evidence suggests the engine removal was done carefully by skilled workers. I won't speculate on the cause at this point. What we do know is that the housing itself had a high concentration of mineral X, the highest on the ship, even counting the hull. More on that to follow. Major conduits ran to the propulsion system but we were unable to find any kind of particle trace within the conduits themselves. A diagram found in the ships computer made reference to a [untranslatable] reservoir. We suspect this ties directly into the collector system.

Propulsion:
While not strictly offline, the propulsion system had been disconnected from the engine core. We suspect the readout does not read as a strict offline due to the fact the entire propulsion system itself is undamaged. Regardless the ship isn't moving anywhere under its own power anytime soon. I've marked this area for future analysis. However I believe the key to unlocking the propulsion system lies in the engine core itself.

Collectors:
The actual type of collectors remains untranslatable, but this is likely how they collect their propellant. The actual reason this system is offline is still unknown. Nothing resembling collectors of any kind were detected on the hull of the vessel. It's my personal hypothesis that the collectors were part of the engine core and were removed when that was. The simple fact is we don't know, and need to look through the ships computers with more detail.

Metallurgical Analysis

With the assistance of the scanners aboard Deep Space 13 a detailed report of the derelicts hull composition was ascertained. The scan revealed a number of common materials including duranium, electroceramics, magnesite, and monotanium. However 61.87% of the hull was comprised of mineral X. The distribution pattern of the mineral X was not uniform. A smaller percent of the fore half of the ship contained the mineral. The content increased following a logarithmic function towards the aft end of the ship.

The distribution of mineral X in this manner was a deliberate construction method. However the reasons for this method of construction are unknown. We do know that the aft end of the ship contained the engine housing. That section was also in the area with the higher concentrations of mineral X in the hull. There is no firm causal link at this point. Further samples from the hull have been taken for a more detailed analysis aboard the station.

Translated Ship Logs

We were able to access a number of logs from the computer aboard the vessel. These logs outlined a history of the vessel through its service life. In it's early history the vessel made numerous trips between the sixth and seventh planet in the Pariah system. We surmised that these systems were the aliens core planets. Close enough to travel between without any form of FTL travel. The ship then underwent a refit at the sixth planet. Immediately after this refit the vessel made numerous trips to the third and fourth planets, as well as the ninth. The logs specifically talk about upgrades to the engines, but much of the technical jargon does not translate. With this knowledge it's believed that the upgrade in question was a form of FTL travel. Comparing time stamps of the logs and using the known distance between planets in the Pariah system we were able to determine that the ship had achieved speeds equivalent to our warp three. I say equivalent since there is no way to known how they actually achieved FTL travel.

In conclusion, we found a lot of information we can use to refine our holodeck programs, as well as some insight on the ship and crew. Overall more questions have arisen then when we started. It's clear that this ship will need to be explored in much more detail over the coming weeks.

Subject: Further Research on Derelict Vessel and Request for recall of Mineral X samples

Commander Everhart, myself, Commander Helstone, and Subcommander Davin Mandukar did further research and simulation testing on Holodeck B in regards to the Derelict Ship brought back from the Pariah System.

We came to the conclusion that the derelict ship had sails that were polaric radiation collectors. The polaric radiation was stored in an internal reservoir and interacted with mineral X to create Tachyon pulses that propelled the ship up to speeds that were equivalent of warp 3. We believe this is a major breakthrough and after communicating with Captain Eli Altais who is currently stranded on the Pariah colony, we feel it necessary to recall all of the samples of Mineral X that were brought back from Pariah in order to recreate a working engine for the derelict ship. Commander Helstone, who was in charge of Deep Space Thirteen at the time concurred.

Please consider this an official request to recall the samples.

Lieutenant Commander,

A request has been sent to Starfleet Logistics to attempt to arrange the return of the samples sent for study elsewhere, to DS13. Please remember to receive approval from Fleet Command prior to initiating unsimulated testing.
