U.S.S. SAGAN
PATHFINDER CLASS // STARFLEET REGISTRY NCC-75055-A

The original U.S.S. Sagan was an Intrepid-class starship that entered service in 2370 under the command of Captain Sabrina Stuart. With deep space research in mind, it was to join the front lines of federation exploration- however, with the rising Gamma Quadrant hostilities and impending Dominion War, this mandate was put on hiatus and instead the Sagan was to join other Starfleet vessels enforcing local Federation space, specifically the Romulan neutral zone.

The Sagan didn't return to exploration duty after the Dominion War had ended, and it remained primarily as a patrol vessel up to 2413, at which time it and most of the fleet were recalled to the Sol System to defend Earth Spacedock against a large Undine attack force. Surviving the defence of Earth, the Sagan was shortly after decommissioned, a new Pathfinder class namesake nearing completion at the San Francisco Fleet Yards.

The new U.S.S. Sagan-A, named for the same 20th century Earth astrophysicist and public speaker, finished construction in 2414 and was assigned to the command of Captain Lauren Varley, under the 38th Fleet. Serving as a squadron flagship and later being reassigned to Starfleet’s exploratory efforts in the Gamma Quadrant, the Sagan’s executive officer was promoted to command the vessel when Captain Varley was reassigned.

The Pathfinder-class Starship was imagined as a modern update to Starfleet's LRSV (Long Range Science Vessel) design on an entirely new hull and systems bed. The success of the Intrepid-class model paved the way for more developments in small, fast, well-armed starships that could sustain themselves for long periods away from a starbase and fulfill extensive research and exploration duties.

The Pathfinder's most notable feature is the 75 meter long secondary deflector embedded into the forward section of the primary hull, which dwarfs those found on most other science vessels. The secondary deflector serves as both a redundant system for the primary deflector and, with both deflectors operational, an approximate 80% improvement on deflector capabilities, including subspace transmission, particle projection, and sensor detection.

A key aspect of the LRSV's success is versatility, as often they operate without support in unfamiliar environments. The Pathfinder-class features two large modular mission bays, located on the aft section of the secondary hull which can be installed and later reinstalled with a wide range of modules such as dedicated science labs, cargo pods, MACO company headquarters, or a runaboat launch bay.

Like their Intrepid-class predecessors, Pathfinder-class starships are designed with variable geometry pylons. This system allows for the warp nacelles of the vessel to change position depending on whether the ship is utilizing its warp engines or not. While at high warp factors, the nacelles are raised in order to provide a more optimal warp field stress balance, resulting in improved engine performance. This permits the ship to maintain high speeds for an extended period of time compared to most other vessels.

The Pathfinder-class was also designed to be compatible with quantum slipstream technology. Its unique primary deflector features a Rigel Lab's quantum slipstream field projector band, however due to the experimental nature of slipstream technology, not all of these vessels were provided with the necessary components and clearance to operate a slipstream field.
