The Kr’Anadar system first came to the attention of the United Federation of Planets on Stardate 14275.0 when a survey probe noted atmospheric changes on the systems only M-Class world consistent with large scale burning of carbon based fuels. A survey ship, the U.S.S. Turing, was launched immediately for a follow-up to assess the cause of the changes and assess any possible sentient lifeforms. What they found was a race of proto-Vulcan humanoids in the midst of early stage industrialization. The species, calling themselves the Masaad, were found to be divided into a number of nation states competing for their worlds natural resources to fuel their newly found engines of industry. Initial surveys concluded on Stardate 14371.5, with a sensor bouy left at the outer edge of the Kr’Anadar system to monitor the progress of the Masaad’s development.
Subsequent years saw decades of off and on warfare as the developing powers on Kr’Anadar fought for resources, supremacy, and prestige. The various conflicts, known by the Masaad as the Great Nationalist Wars, concluded on Stardate 68416.2. In that time a handful of states had reached dominance amongst the Masaad nations. On the southwestern continent the Liviri Republic, formerly the Royal Imperium of the Liviri, oversaw a number of colonies across the globe, all of which largely existed to feed natural resources into the industrialized metropol. To the east, the Kordivan Pact dominated the full extent of the eastern continents through a number of trade deals, most of which favored the Kordivan nation. In the northern hemisphere a number of rebellious island colonies banded together to form the Val’Kirus Collective, a recently industrialized nation which proved its might in a number of conflicts near the conclusion of the Great Nationalist Wars.
The intervening years, though outwardly peaceful, were a time of great strain between the rival Kordivan and Liviri factions, and the fiercely independent Val’Kir. The splitting of the atom by Val’Kiran scientists on Stardate 71102.2 shocked their former overlords in the southern hemisphere, and sent the other major powers into a rush to develop for themselves sources of nuclear power, and the much more troubling development of nuclear armaments. The first nuclear test detonation on Kr’Anadar was logged on Stardate 71990.8 on an uninhabited island at the northern end of the Val’Kir archipelago. Subsequent tests by the Liviri and the Kordivan followed within the year, leading to a state of nuclear cold war. Radio transmissions picked up by Starfleets listening bouy detail a rise in fear and nationalist ideals in culture at all levels, and across all major nations and their allies.
On Stardate 84886.2 the Kr’Anadar bouy recorded the launch of a long range ballistic missile from the Liviri, followed almost immediately by a nuclear detonation on the Val’Kir trade city of Jeveral. Over the next 72 hours more than 400 subsequent launches were detected. The vast majority were intercepted before impact, but enough weapons struck their targets to cause significant devastation to the planets infrastructure and major urban areas. The years that followed saw the Masaad plunged into a state of constant warfare amongst the survivors for what remained of the world's resources. Although no further nuclear weapons have been utilized, devastating strikes by conventional weapons are commonplace.
The Masaad population has been in a state of decline from the outset of hostilities, dropping from nearly 5 billion individuals to a current estimate of 3.8 billion. Continual warfare has so far thwarted any attempts to affect large scale cleansing of radiation from the planets environment. Disease, both from conventional infections and those caused by the massive increase in background radiation, is at epidemic levels. The ecological damage can only be described as catastrophic. Federation experts predict that at its current rate of decline the planet will only be able to sustain the Masaad for another ten generations.
As the Masaad are not yet space faring, the Prime Directive forbids any interference with the progression of their culture along its current course. The Kr’Anadar bouy will be left in position to monitor the situation on the planets surface. In the event of warp drive development by the Masaad, Starfleet has prepared an action plan for revitalizing the Kr’Anadar ecosystem.
