BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Tau was born in 2377, on-board the Galaxy-class ship U.S.S. Vindictive. Tau has lived aboard Starfleet ships most of his life. His mother, an exo-biologist and a Lieutenant Commander, raised him for the first five years aboard the Vindictive, a ship re-dedicated to exploration after the end of the Dominion war. His father, an NCO and engineer, was not always stationed with his family. This did not stop their relationship from being a close one.

As a result, Tau is a child of the Federation. An agreeable and intelligent child, Tau preferred studies to athletics. He and his younger sister, Marea, flourished in the education system afforded them on the exploration starships their mother would often find herself on.

As he grew older, Tau found the only place he wanted to be was on a Starfleet ship. After gaining entrance to Starfleet Academy Tau decided to focus on engineering as a course of action, though his true ambitions were unclear to him when he chose it. He graduated with a focus on warp theory and subspace mechanics. After an initial assignment period in the Utopia Planetia shipyards, Tau found himself assigned to U.S.S. Nome, one of the breed of newly-designed Discovery Class ships.

Tau served aboard U.S.S. Nome for four years, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In these years aboard Nome, he came to the conclusion that perhaps Engineering was his passion, but not his career choice. He made a firm decision, and after numerous discussions with his superiors, was given admission to begin training in the command track outside of shift hours. He finished this tactical/command training in 2406.

In 2405, as tensions with the Klingons were rising he was transferred to the Sao Paulo-class U.S.S. Nike. The ship was designed for covert missions, and Tau took to the inevitable combat that was seen with enthusiasm. After a particularly dangerous mission in 2407 that saw the loss of a number of bridge officers, Tau was outfitted with tactical reds and placed on weapons. Remaining aboard Nike until the end of 2409, Tau excelled in his role, particularly in crisis situations.

He transferred off the ship with the rank of Commander, onto the Avenger-class U.S.S. Janus. Serving aboard the U.S.S. Janus for several years, Tau served as second in command until his commanding officer was transferred to a new command. The ship was placed in Thiessen's command on stardate 91938.18.

Tau successfully led Janus in command until 2414, when the battle at the Lekaari Keep caused the loss of U.S.S. Janus in addition to 163 crew in a fight against the Breen.

Investigation into the loss of U.S.S. Janus by J.A.G. officer Commander Masters concluded that Commander Tau Thiessen was at no fault for the destruction of U.S.S. Janus in the course of battle against the Breen. It was determined that the Janus' sacrifice proved instrumental to evacuation of upwards of 25,000 Lekaari civilians. Per approval of J.A.G. and Commodore Joran Romar, Thiessen was given command of Dakota-class U.S.S. Baldur.

During the Iconian War, Tau was taken prisoner by Elachi in the region. He nearly died from the incident. Once rescued he was back to fighting the war effort within the week. As a result, Tau remains under the watchful eye of his medical staff, though cleared for duty.

U.S.S. Baldur transferred from the Federation-controlled Deep Space 515 to assist Deep Space 151 (wejpuH tul starbase) with joint task-force operational assistance in 2415.

After transfer to the 38th fleet and time served as XO of the October and CO of the Baldur, Thiessen has accepted a position of XO aboard DS13, serving under Captain Freeman. On Captain Freeman's unfortunate passing at the hands of the Liberty Brigade terrorist organization, Commander Thiessen was made Commanding Officer.

Tau held command of DS13 until late 2217, when an encounter between the Junayd and the Azedi occurred around DS13. With many deaths associated with the loss of Deep Space 13, during the recovery process Thiessen was removed from command of the starbase and placed aboard the U.S.S. Atlantis. Captain Caspius replaced Captain Thiessen after a promotion. Captain Thiessen, concerned about longterm station on a vessel, spoke to the Rear Admiral and was then relieved from command of the USS Atlantis. Currently, he holds no command.

SUMMARY:
During a period of imprisonment by the Iconians, Commander Thiessen was subjected to a number of experiments by his captors. This included the introduction of multiple infectious agents into his system, presumably for purposes of measuring their effects on a human subject.

The medical team that treated him upon rescue is to be commended for their fine work; however, once the initial crisis had passed, Commander Thiessen received no follow-up care or examinations. As a result, the patient has developed a chronic hyperimmune response that will require a series of organ transplants and a course of drug therapy to correct. Preparations for this procedure are now in progress, to be scheduled when the Commander returns from his next patrol.

Commander Thiessen is rated provisionally capable of fulfilling his duty on condition that the procedure takes place on schedule. It is the opinion of this physician that the CMO of the USS Baldur should be reprimanded for failing to assess the Commander’s health prior to this evaluation. The Commander has volunteered that he intentionally avoided visiting his CMO, but that is no excuse for neglect. An earlier diagnosis could have spared the patient additional organ damage, and a later one could have resulted in serious and potentially fatal complications.

SUMMARY

Captain Thiessen previously underwent a multi-organ transplant following [redacted] and shows no symptoms of rejection at this time. Unfortunately, he has developed high blood pressure bordering on hypertension levels. Considering his excellent physical conditioning, it is the opinion of this physician that external factors are more likely to be the trigger for this hypertension.

Discussed different lifestyle change options for reducing blood pressure. Capt Thiessen will also reach out to counseling to counter the effects of personal and administrative stress. Per regulations, the Captain’s blood pressure will be monitored weekly until it returns to safe levels.

CAPT Tau Thiessen is rated capable of active duty without reservation at this time.

MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT

UP TO DATE: Y
STATUS:

Evaluator: Sedai, Katriel Eden
Authority: Psychological Counselor, Deep Space 13

Subject: Thiessen, Tau
Stardate: ((27 Sep 2016))
Length of Interview: 1.5 hrs

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The authority granted by Starfleet Medical P.D. finds the subject to be of sound mental health and fit for active duty, as of his assessment date. Authority affirms that no psychological trauma was observed during the interview, though subject has professed to continued periodic symptoms which bear continued assessment and treatment.

Subject is largely characterized by his open and freely expressive demeanor; having been in counseling for an extended period of time now, he demonstrates a level of natural self-awareness that makes him extremely comfortable with speaking aloud about his difficulties to counselors, and he willingly does so without rancor or melodrama. Subject does possess a streak of stubbornness. Though he will follow orders he does not agree with, subject also retains the necessary temerity to counter orders of inaction when he feels like he must. Subject has a highly kinetic personal energy, prone to physical gestures and movement even while sitting still, and values his colleagues for their reliability and ability to keep a cool head.

Despite the subject's trauma-fraught recent history, he maintains a remarkable sense of optimism and generally positive outlook on the people around him and his circumstances. This is a cornerstone aspect of the subject's being, further evidenced by his spiritual faith, which is predicated on tenets of forgiveness and kindness towards others; he would rather believe in no deity at all than one that is purposefully cruel. His capability for this sort of emotional flexibility is partially tactical; he is more reliant on his ability to bounce back from a catastrophe rather than suffer an unyielding, eternal endurance through it.
