Briefing notes:

U.S.S. Robau departed DS13 enroute to the Denovora system. Previously the ship had visited a planet of this system. In doing so, the crew members Captain Buchanan tr'Veras and Lieutenant ch'Shara became infected with a fungal parasite. This infection led to the death of Sublieutenant Andria t'Anarhai.

Due to these circumstances Captain Buchanan tr'Veras intended to return to Denovora with the express purpose of opening a line of communication. These beings had communicated briefly with telepaths aboard station with the stated intent of 'returning home'. Use of lethal force was authorized only in the event of life-threatening circumstances, with the intent of this mission being a peaceful contact mission.

On arrival in the Denovora system, Lieutenant JG Kraf's scans detected that below the surface of the planet last visited by the Captain's team were located vast caverns. These caverns were calcium deposits running in veins throughout the planet's subterranean regions, many of which have appeared to have collapsed over the years due to natural geological activities.

At my suggestion a transporter lock was made on a small portion of this calcified structure. As the creature found on the Captain's spine was made of a bone-like substance the initial theory was that perhaps these caverns were full of said parasites.

On arrival in the laboratory, Lieutenant Lendaria and myself set about to examining what we had transported. While compositionally similar to the previous creatures it was not the same. The appearance of the thing resembled something like a calcified arthropod fragment with offshoots similar to plant vines and clumps of neurological tissue.

Our initial theory was disproved when genetic scans made it clear that this creature was not a creature at all, but a piece of a creature. The beast was not many but one large mineral being, inhabiting the series of underground caves in a structure unlike which we have observed before.

With this knowledge reported to the Captain we departed for planetside under decontamination protocols.
The away team consisted of: Captain Buchanan tr'Veras, Lieutenant Lendaria, Lieutenant JG Kraf, Ensign t'Sahen, Commander Thue and Lieutenant ch'Shara. It had been decided that we would attempt to utilize Lieutenant ch'Shara as a conversational conduit for the creature, as previously speaking through Captain Buchanan tr'Veras meant that at least rudimentary communication was possible.

The center junction of these veins is where we transported ourselves. In arrival, a large series of fossilized bones was found in wall of the cavern. More impressively, in the center structure, a mass of glowing particles could be seen. This tide of these what I must conclude to be fungal spores enveloped Lieutenant ch'Shara and dragged him to the center of the column, supporting him. He began to speak for the creature. Below is the full video recording, but I shall summarize for the sake of brevity:

The creature spoke through the Lieutenant, stating it had been a great deal of time before it had seen sentient company. Their world was once vibrant and saw a devastating cataclysm brought about by an unknown force. The creature stated that once betrayed Iconians had settled within and on this planet as a refuge from those that harmed them, but were attacked and this world was destroyed.

It stated that once there were many large creatures planet-side they could communicate through that lacked sentient intelligence, but because of this cataclysm they no longer could communicate through living beings. The away team previously arrived had been infected not out of malevolent intent, but as a way to research and attempt to record our ways to better understand our species' ways.

The creature - referring to itself as the Gestalt - informed us that the parasites are smaller creatures that make up a part of the whole. They are not so intelligent as the rest of the Gestalt and as such the violent attack they forced Captain Buchanan tr'Veras to commit was not out of malice but a cry to be discovered. They wished to return home as it appears they did not expect the team to leave the regions so quickly.

Regret was expressed at what happened, termed as a 'grave injustice'.

Lieutenant Lendaria offered to be made a primary congress for this Gestalt to speak through her willingly, but given the grave consequences of such things it was not immediately acted upon. The Gestalt removed the 'child' within Lieutenant ch'Shara and we were permitted to leave and stated intent to return.

Peaceful contact with the creature(s) calling themselves (itself) the Gestalt has been made and likely should be maintained. This creature is exceptionally unique and it is my opinion that steps should be taken to maintain friendly terms for study purposes if no other. Introducing a dull bestial species to their world for purposes of allowing them freedom to experience the world again may be a good first step.

In addition, Lieutenant Lendaria's offer to be a communications conduit in the future has its merits to be discussed among her commanding staff.

Commander Thue
