Due Diligence

(This is for Krann.)

Lieutenant Jetaal stood before the viewscreen, her hands folded behind her back. It wasn't easy for a Starfleet lieutenant to get an audience with a Republic Admiral, but after two weeks of working her way through progressively higher ranks with her polite, incessant requests for a meeting, Admiral S'tara's adjutant had agreed to a conference.

The screen snapped into life right on time, and Jetaal faced off against a male Romulan with a chill expression.

"I am Centurion Jedek of the RRW Temer," he said without preamble.

"I am Lieutenant Jetaal, DS13 Security Division," responded Jetaal courteously. "I wished to place a request - "

" - to speak with Admiral S'tara, yes," he interrupted testily. "You have made sixteen such requests in the last twelve days. Is this regarding the legal proceedings involving Subcommander Krann?"

Jetaal's unblinking gaze held the Centurion's. "That is correct."

The Centurion looked offscreen a millisecond, then back. "One moment."

The screen blanked to silver, and Jetaal sighed inwardly as they prepared to deflect her yet again.

The newly promoted Admiral sighed, she had been far too engaged getting everything in order to respond to the call of one starfleet security officer, even if it was about an old friend.

She absently scratched her now graying hair, as she tapped the com console.

"Jedek, put her through," She sighed and forced a smile as per personal view screen flickered on. "So you are Jetaal, I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner, I've been rather busy lately."

The Admiral herself appeared on her screen. Jetaal blinked - an uncommon event. She hadn't expected success.

"Thank you for meeting with me, Admiral," she said swiftly, not wanting to waste this opportunity. "I am an officer with the DS13 Security Division, and I am investigating an incident that occurred here on the station involving Subcommander Krann. It has come to my attention that there are certain gaps in his personal history as represented by his service record. There are notations that suggest you may be able to shed light on those gaps. Would you be willing to speak to me regarding Subcommander Krann's activities before he joined the Republic?"

The Admiral's surprise and concern was immediately apparent as the question was asked. It was not by any means classified information, but Krann had not confided in anyone but herself about what had happened on Lilat. She thought for a moment, it was not the first time that she had been asked about this information, and it wouldn't be the first she had told her part at lease. After all her story was hers.

"Alright DS13 Security, I'll tell you what I know.

A long time ago, when the Republic was little more than an idea in D'tan's head, I ran shipments for various Romulan colonies. One day, on a perfectly normal trip I was intercepted by a tal'shiar vessel, Now, I had dealt with them before but this time was different. It opened fire and I swerved to dodge, the maneuver cost me my warp drive and starboard maneuvering thruster, and I was sent hurdling towards what was supposed to be an uninhabited world."

She shudders a little as she remembers the crash.

"Well needless to say I ended up in an escape pod, the sole survivor of my crew. I thought I was a goner, until an angry looking Reman showed up, then I KNEW I was a goner. He approached me, pale eyes filled with rage, a blade raised above his head, ready to strike me down, but something changed. His hands shook and tears started falling down his face, he didn't kill me that day."

She pauses for a moment and smiles, it's a similar expression to Krann's ever present grin.

"Am I putting you to sleep yet?"

Jetaal absorbed this information in respectful silence. If this were Krann the Admiral was describing - and the context suggested it - this was interesting information. The portrait the Admiral painted of a rage-filled Reman intent on murder was far different from the calm demeanor the suspect had exhibited during his incarceration in the infirmary. She recalled his expression when describing how he felt about Romulans like Commander Thue who held the his race in contempt. She recalled, also, that it was the display of that contempt from Commander Thue that had prompted the supposedly inadvertent assault.

"No, Admiral," she asserted. "I am not sleepy. Was the Reman you speak of Subcommander Krann, and if so, could you conjecture why he felt it necessary to threaten a helpless person with attack?"

She sighed, realizing that she may have accidentally dug the Subcommander into a hole. She would have to send him some alcohol as an apology but, she would have to tell the full story.

"I can yes, After that he took me to his shelter in the wilderness, a cave in the mountains, it was winter but he'd managed to scrounge some energy cells from my crash site so we stayed warm. I could never tell weather he was glad to have spared me or remorseful, so one day I confronted him about it. This part of the story I have to ask you keep to yourself. He told me that he had once lived in a Vulcan monastery. They taught him their ways, their martial arts, their rituals treated him as one of their own.

After he'd escaped Remus he'd finally found somewhere he felt at home, at peace. Then, one day the Tal'shiar found them, the Vulcans there were exiles, so nobody knew about the place, they figured it was the perfect place to gather up test subjects. They attacked, the monks didn't stand a chance, when Krann discovered what happened, he ran to try and help discovering he was too late, he went into a blind rage and killed every last one of them. What he didn't realize is he also killed his teacher, T'saria."

She sighed, visibly shaken, it's obvious the story had affected her.

"After that he ran into the wilderness, living as a hermit, until I crashed. He thought I was Tal'shiar and was ready to kill me but something in him changed that day. He was tired of fighting, he didn't care if I shot him in the back, because he'd already lost everything. I tried my best to be a good friend to him, and if I'm honest we became more during our time there. Eventually the Tal'shiar tracked me down, and came for us. We snuck aboard and stole their ship and that's when we were contacted by D'tan."

She takes a deep breath and smiles softly, her demeanor is different from when she started, softer.

"Was that all?" she says quietly.

Jetaal paused a few moments, gathering all that she needed to say into a neat mental stack before dispensing them in order.

"Admiral S'tara," she said politely, "I must advise you per regulations that the information you have provided to me may be used, in whole or in part, to assist the prosecution in this case if an arrest is made. Also in line with regulations, I have a recording of this conference to assure that contextual factors remain intact for perusal by other authorities and jurors. Is there anything you wish to add to this record regarding the character or actions of Subcommander Krann?"

She paused, and bit her lip.

"No," She thinks for a moment "Oh actually, if you wan't to avoid causing a diplomatic incident with my first officer, just request a meeting once, and we'll get to it as soon as we are able... Jolan Tru Jetaal."

Jetaal was grateful that she had spoken to sufficient numbers of Romulans on the station to know the proper farewell. "Bedah, Admiral S'tara. Thank you for your time."

She ended the conference and left to compile her report.
