INVESTIGATION: Poisoning

INCIDENT: STARLIGHT CANTINA POISONINGREPORTING OFFICER: LTJG JETAAL, F.D.
STARDATE: 92861.3LEVEL 2: CONFIDENTIAL

This report details my investigation into the poisoning incident that occurred in the Starlight Cantina, now called the Event Horizon Lounge. I have included as attachments all prior investigative activity and will append this file as the investigation proceeds.

SUMMARY

In the Starlight Cantina (now Event Horizon Lounge), two people consumed iced green tea from a bottle that had been contaminated with methanol. One was a guest. The other was the assistant bar manager who served the drink to the guest. The contaminated bottle was recovered and all other beverages and foodstuffs scanned and determined free of contaminant. Prompt medical attention prevented long-term injury or death, but the medical report attached indicates this would have been lethal without immediate treatment.

INITIAL PERSONS OF INTEREST

VICTIM 1: LTJG WIlliam Steele - Operations Officer, DS13 - Victim One

VICTIM 2: CIV Nalah - Assistant Bar Manager, Event Horizon Lounge

WITNESS: CMDR Dallas Burns - Commanding Officer, USS Yorktown

ATTENDING PHYSICIAN: CMDR Charlotte Jarnefelt, Physician, DS13

SUPPLY DEPOT REP: TBD

INTERVIEWS

Spoiler: LTJG William SteeleShow
I interviewed LTJG just before he left the infirmary.

Q: I've reviewed the holorecordings available of the cantina on the night in question. What did you drink?

A: It was some kind of mint iced tea. The barkeep recommended it to me.

Q: Have you ever had that kind of tea before?

A: Not that I know of, no.

Q: But she recommended it to you? I have in my notes that she also sampled the tea and became ill.

A: Yeah. Or, well, I ordered iced tea without being too specific and I think she she'd just gotten that batch.

Q: I see. Do you know the bartender well?

A: No, I'd never met her before then.

Q: Before serving you the poisoned tea, did she act or react in any way that you found strange?

A: I've been running it through my mind since I've been in here. Plenty of time on my hands and all. And, no, I can't say she acted out of the ordinary. For a Ferengi, anyway. She gave the old 'tell your friends to come around' and that sorta' advertisement thing.

Q: Do you recall who else was in the cantina at the time?

A: Well, I was there speakin' with Captain Dallas. I don't really remember anyone else specifically.

Q: Did you see anyone else order drinks during your visit?

A: Well.. the Captain and I were both drinking coffee. I went for the tea after I'd finished my mug. I don't recall anyone else, no.

Q: Did you see anyone other than the bartender that served you or Swifty behind the bar?

A: No, sorry, I don't remember seeing anyone. It was fairly early in the morning and all.

Q: Did the cantina receive any deliveries that you noticed while you were there?

A: (The Lieutenant shook his head to indicate a negative response.)

Following an interview with Assistant Bar Manager Nalah, I proceeded to investigate the crate in which the tainted bottle arrived on the station. This crate contained various items, all purchased by Nalah on K-7.

//List of Unrelated Crate Contents//

I requisitioned assistance from the Science Department intern pool. After thorough examination, one item is of potentially significant interest: a bottle of strongly scented chemicals. Cadet Monáe informed me that this substance is to be applied externally on the skin to improve or mask body odors.

Chemical analysis of the substance identified the presence of methanol. Cadet Monáe explained that, using an organic catalyst, it would not be difficult to isolate and remove the scent-bearing properties of the substance, rendering the methanol much more difficult to detect when mixed with a beverage. Such an organic catalyst wouldn't trip the transporter or replicator disposal alarms; if it exists, it is unlikely that we will recover it.

Three pieces of circumstantial evidence should be entered into the record.

1. This bottle of perfume is listed on the manifest of goods recently purchased at K-7.
2. The bottle is only half full; Cadet Monáe has advised me that substances like this are used sparingly.
3. The bottle is intact and there was no evidence of a spill within the crate.

I commend Cadet Monáe for her diligent examination of its contents.

At this time I am attaching documentation regarding some communications Lieutenant Steele received which appear directly related to the poisoning incident.

We have a proposal for you which might become very profitable. There is certain useful merchandise that might need the scrutiny of a compassionate eye, one sympathetic to the facilitation of free trade and progress of course.

This communication is encrypted and if you are interested, just reply to this within the next hour. Don't bother tracing where it comes from or where your response will go, we have systems in place.

We were wondering if recent events helped you consider our offer. All you need to do is hit reply.

In both circumstances, LTJG Steele reported these emails to Command - the first to his superior, CMDR Caspius (Chief of Operations) and the second to CMDR Kozath, head of Security. There is no evidence to suggest that LTJG Steele has not been forthcoming, or that he had prior knowledge of the person or persons attempting to contact him.

In light of new circumstantial evidence (the presence of a depleted source of methanol in Assistant Bar Manager Nalah's shipment crate and her established and unchallenged possession of the tainted bottle), I am initiating a closer examination of all communications from Assistant Bar Manager Nalah's office, her personal PADD and the cantina terminal for any detectable relationship with these unknown communications to LTJG Steele. I will update.

I think I found someone. It's Lieutenant William Steele. New guy, eager to impress. Probably not very experienced. Maybe we can pique his intrests with a dubious

I am attaching his voice recording, he comes to the bar often.

The content of these messages confirms that Nalah was complicit in the poisoning of LTJG. Steele and herself. It also suggests she may have been compelled by concern for her brother. These documents constitute sufficient evidence to make an arrest. I will request a warrant.
