Interview with Nalah

(IT WAS YOU WHAT DONE IT WASN'T YOU)

Jetaal left the turbolift, headed for the Promenade. Her pace was brisk, her expression determined. After the fiasco with Subcommander Krann, Jetaal had been frustrated to find her quarry had proved immune to prosecution. Though she had been assured that no fault on her part had occurred, she had felt that defeat keenly. Now that Commander Kozath had granted her another case, she was more than ready to apply her investigative skills to the poisoning incident in the cantina.

The office reserved for the Assistant Bar Manager of the Event Horizon Lounge was tucked away to the side, and Jetaal wasted no time in touching the door chime. She had observed Nalah enter only moments before on the security holofeed. She hoped the bartender would be as cooperative as Lieutenant Steele.
Nalah had enough time to walk behind her desk and pick up a PADD before the chime caught her attention. Grumbling, and still standing, she quickly put away the PADD in a drawer somewhere underneath the desk and looked up at the door.

"What? Who is it now?" She responded.

The bartender sounded aggravated. Jetaal adjusted her expectations about cooperation accordingly.

"Lieutenant Jetaal, DS13 Security Division. I would like to speak to you, Ms. Nalah," she responded courteously.

Nalah was startled after hearing the word "Security" and quickly rushed towards the console by the desk and checked her reflection. She quickly adjusted her collar and then tried a couple of the biggest Ferengily possible smiles she could muster. After checking that all her clothes were in the right place by passing her hands along her sides, she turned back around again, still standing behind the desk, and cleared her throat.

"Oh, yes yes sure. Come in!" Her tone of voice was friendlier this time.

Jetaal enters as the door slides open, glancing around. The office was bright with color that drew the eye. A statue of a female Ferengi sat at one corner, clad in robes and a serene expression, holding aloft a copy of the Rules of Acquisition. Various framed artworks decorated the walls. Jetaal paused momentarily before the image of a single, shiny bar of gold-pressed latinum, elaborately staged in dramatic lighting on a dark surface. She read the words inscribed on the frame.
Anything worth selling is worth selling twice.

Jetaal grinned for a quarter-second. She, too, came from a culture that valued trade above most pursuits. Ferengi trappings reminded her a little of home.

The Ferengi was standing behind her desk, and Jetaal repeated her brief grin in response to Nalah's wide smile. "I'm sorry to intrude, Miss Nalah. I wished to speak with you regarding the poisoning incident at the cantina the other evening, while the events are still fresh in your mind. Do you have a few minutes?"

Nalah's smile quickly turned into a quiver. She darted around the desk and wound up in front of the Security Officer, slumping on her knees with her hands and fingers interlocked as if praying. She looked up at Jetaal with the biggest Ferengi puppy eyes ever displayed in the sector... If there were such a thing as "Ferengi puppy eyes".

“Pleeeease! I am so sorry! I didn't do it, I swear!” It was difficult to understand whether she was actually crying or she was just being the typically theatrical Ferengi at this stage, “I have family to feed. My two poor, poor brothers..." She allowed a few sobs to interrupt what she was saying, "They haven't the lobes for business, how am I going to take care of them if you fire me!?”

Jetaal took a single step backward as the Ferengi dropped to her knees, one hand automatically dropping to her phaser's handle. The necessary impetus for drawing it was missing, though; there was no other movement in the room, nothing in Nalah's clasped hands, nothing to suggest an attack of any kind.

Nalah's words registered next, and Jetaal relaxed, a little. Only the increased twitchiness of her movements suggested her agitation. "Miss Nalah," she began in her best kindly voice, "I'm not empowered to terminate your employment. You are not under suspicion yet. Please, be at ease, and..." Jetaal did not perform nervous interjections like 'uh' and 'um', but the silence in the middle of the word served the same purpose. "...get up."

Nalah stopped sobbing almost instantly, blinked a few times and cleared her throat. She hid her embarrassment behind another show of her Ferengi grin, while standing back up and dusting off her clothes.

"Oh, okay of course. You never know." She awkwardly patted Jetaal on her left shoulder, but withdrew her hand away a few moments later, as if worried that the Security Officer could bite her any moment. "The faster we can put this behind us, the better, the Lounge's reputation is at stake. It's bad enough that I have Romulans flinging accusations at me out of nowhere. This whole thing is bad for business!"

The Ferengi darted back behind her desk and motioned Jetaal to sit.

"Can I offer you a beverage? I have this very nice authentic Chinese set we could drink it in, passed down from generation to generation on Earth for years and I managed to get my hands on it..." Nalah staged a whisper while bringing a hand to the side of her face, "It's a real bargain if you are interested."

After a few moments of silence the Ferengi continued, "No poison..." She sighed, "See how this is hurting my business?!"

Jetaal took the offered seat. "I can see how fear of poisoning might slow sales," she agreed sympathetically. "I'm sure the Chinese set is lovely, but I am not well-positioned to offer what it is worth; I'm sure a more affluent customer will gladly pay you its true value." Jetaal had no idea what a Chinese set was, but she knew how to turn down an offer gracefully.

"I have the holofeeds from the incident, but some details are unclear," she explained. "Do you recall opening - " A small photograph on the desk of Lt. Jal'Shan interrupted her line of thought and caused another odd pause before her sentence completed. The frame concealed what might have been a small heart. " - ... the bottle in question?" she finished at last.

"Your loss." Nalah shrugged.

She furrowed her eyebrows after hearing Jetaal's question and scratched her chin with her index, while placing her thumb underneath it.

"Yes, yes, Swifty has a lousy system for keeping inventory! I had to rummage through several bottles, they weren't where I expected them to be."

The Ferengi ventured a glance towards the small statue to the right of her desk. She looked inspired as she took a deep breath.

"Anyway the Lieutenant asked for a tea, there was this new batch... After my enterprising discovery of the Pumpkin Spice Raktajino, I was going to launch the next big thing." Nalah offered another very large grin, showing off her knife-like teeth.

Jetaal admired Nalah's teeth. "You said the bottles weren't where you expected them to be. I spoke to Lieutenant Steele. He said he did not ask for a specific brand or style of iced tea." Her gaze snagged on yet another of the many framed artworks on the walls, a snow-capped peak, its top lost in the clouds. Beneath it ran the caption: Faith can move mountains of inventory.

"What made you select the bottle you did?" pressed Jetaal. "Were there others like it in the same 'batch'?"

Nalah raised a finger and opened her mouth but no sound came out if it. She blinked a few times, her big grin dimmed for a second or two, but it soon returned as her face lit up.

“You underestimate how badly organised Swifty has been during my trip to discover new business avenues for the bar. Teas were with beers and wine was with water… I was lucky to have found this one in particular, and well, like I said... This one was the next big thing after the Pumpkin Spice Raktajino, which was totally my idea by the way, don't let the naysayers fool you.”

The Ferengi turned her gaze to the drawer where she had stored the PADD before Jetaal came in the office. Her movements were generally quick and short, albeit a bit frantic at times. She opened the drawer and pulled the PADD out of it before placing it on the desk.

“But you might find this interesting. It looks like someone was trying to contact me too. I played along a bit, see if they’d expose themselves, maybe I could get some info out of them…” Nalah paused and looked away for a second, entertaining a thought. “You never know when a good deal could land on your lap either.” She turned back to Jetaal and cleared her throat once more. “Anyway, you might find this illuminating.”

Spoiler: If Jetaal decided to read the PADD, she would have uncovered an interesting conversation...Show

Subj: Contact?

Nalah,

We don't know one another but I'm with the Republic contingent. It happens I'm close friends with Lieutenant Steele - I heard from one of the merchants at the bar you may be looking to get into touch with him but he's not yet responded. I've a great deal of sway, if that is the case.

Let me know,

Commander,

I have no idea what you are talking about regarding the Lieutenant. But I am always willing to strike a deal!

Are you certain?

Because I will be quite clear, Assistant Manager. It is not likely that a Romulan Commander is this overly attached to a human as they may appear to be, let along be considered such a "dear" friend.

Methanol is a child's tool. If whoever laced that drink wants something that does real damage, they would come to a Rihannsu.

That thing sent me right to the med bay as well. I am lucky the dose wasn't lethal. And so is William. Are you saying it was unlucky it went down that way?

Not necessarily, Assistant Manager.

Simply that there are other ways that may be less damaging to all involved. If indeed the intent of this unseen person was to gain compliance from a certain human, broker a deal, there are ways to make that happen through drink or food that don't cause potential grievous bodily harm.

You and William are indeed very lucky you are safe, Nalah, and it's quite convenient that the tea you gave him wasn't more than an inconvenience.

...were you interested in making some kind of deal? You seem quite interested. Clearly you know you have my attention.

Let's make something really clear as you say. There might deals to be made. But I'd like to know why Bill said I tried to get his attention. There are no communications sent to him with my name on it, as I haven't sent any.

Surely, if you caring about him is a pretence as you say, you won't mind giving me that information.

After all any deal needs trust.

Yours truly,
Nalah

My goodness, did I specifically say you? It's my understanding that some enterprising merchant has been trying to get his attention through a series of unmarked messages. Perhaps it was Swifty? I'm really not certain but the information I've obtained shows me that it's someone he's familiar with.

Come now, you really expect me to reveal my informant? I am familiar with someone in Ops. That's all you need know.

I think that should be sufficient for trust.

Don't you?

Yes, you did actually. I never said it though. And you mentioned Steele.

Understand I have a reputation to maintain. It can't be said that my clients are purposefully being poisoned. I am just a Ferengi showing the world that males aren't the only ones with the lobes for business.

He needs to know it wasn't me.

That's the deal.

Best regards,
Nalah

Oh you needn't explain to be the need for the solidarity of 'sisterhood'. In the wake of the destruction of Romulus - you may not know this - we have a biological imperative now in addition to serving the Republic in all other ways. It's a bit exhausting.

Risk losing a little possible extra influence or latinum to buy some lieutenant's favor? I'm Romulan, dear, I'm not daft.

I wouldn't dream of telling Will about it.

That's a fair deal.

Well, with the understanding that I have no idea of how the poison got there, there might be some "goods" that require an extra eye to make sure they don't fall in the wrong hands.

I wasn't aware that Romulans dealt with docks and merchants, though.

Yours truly,

Less with docks, but our people had quite the dealset with merchants. We didn't bounce back from the Hobus tragedy on simply our Federation aid and good looks. Where docking is concerned, as I said, I do have a decent hold on the Lieutenant and may be willing to utilize that to assist you. Those random messages are a good way of getting yourself caught, you know.

What precisely are you looking to get guided? And what can you make it worth for me?

I don't know what messages you are talking about. I just extended the hand of friendship to you as someone who asked to trade.

Nalah.

At this point, Thue's comms go quiet. Any attempt to contact her goes unanswered.

Jetaal reviewed the messages, trying to look surprised at all the right points. Commander Thue had provided the same exchange in an attempt to implicate Nalah. Now it seemed Nalah wished to use it to implicate Commander Thue. Jetaal permitted herself a small sigh. Amateur investigative assistants could be entertaining, but they were rarely helpful.

"Thank you for the information," she said gravely, returning the PADD to the Ferengi. "Miss Nalah, let me ask again. What brought the poisoned bottle to your attention? You have described as 'the next big thing'. How were you familiar with the product? Did a particular supplier bring it to your attention? This was the only contaminated bottle in the Lounge's inventory. I want to know what made you choose it."

Nalah looked past Jetaal and squinted her eyes as if trying to remember something.

"You know, these are trade secrets. If I told everyone who my suppliers were, I would be out of business."

The Ferengi looked at Jetaal again to gauge the reaction.

Jetaal flashed a very brief smile. "I think your death by poisoning could also be a setback, but even that is not the most inconvenient resolution for you, Miss Nalah. Right now, the only person known to have had contact with the poisoned bottle is you. Deny me access to your supply chain and the odds of you avoiding prosecution for negligence, food safety violations and accessory to attempted murder become very slim."

"Of course" Nalah's rebuttal was quick, almost as if expecting that answer, haggling over the information as if she were trading the best Ferengi silk, "I can make an exception for someone as illustrious as you."

The Assistant Manager looked around her with suspicion, as if there were someone else in the room, which, clearly, there wasn't. It was perhaps a clumsy attempt to heighten suspense for the valuable information she was about to deliver. "There was a merchant fair in K7."

She paused.

"...So anyway" She sighed a little, "There were various things, this merchant was selling various drinks and beverages. I had actually tried this tea there and then and thought it was great. I checked the ingredients, there was nothing else besides mint and tea in that! But the novelty was that it was already made, and you could take it with you for those emergency moments where you didn't have time to go make yourself a drink in between phaser shootings. I have a number of bottles in the cargo bay. I had brought this one as I wanted to try it on a customer. But I had brought it a few hours before the incident and I left the Cantina in between."

Now Jetaal felt she was getting somewhere.

"Miss Nalah," she began politely. "How long have you been an assistant bar manager?"
"Just over an year. My Job requires me to travel a lot, secure new deals, and things like that, so I am rarely at the bar itself." Nalah served another dose of Ferengi grin, "But when I do it functions like clockwork... Well when people don't poison my supplies."

Jetaal gave Nalah's smile a fractional echo. "Please give this answer due consideration, Miss Nalah. I am certain a woman of your experience can answer it definitively. Was the bottle already open when you served Lieutenant Steele and yourself, or did it retain the supplier's seal?"

"You could teach a few male Ferengi a thing or two about driving a hard bargain. Are you sure you are not looking for a career move?"

Nalah shuffled on her chair a little.

"Erm... I didn't really pay attention to that... I recall needing to exert a certain amount of force to open it. I don't remember breaking seals."
