As per orders, the U.S.S. Ananke departed from Deep Space 13 in stardate 93081.1. Its assignment was to patrol the outskirts of the Liyan Cluster in order to check that no other part of the Federation satellite surveillance web at the Klingon border was exploited or damaged in any way by local powers, as discovered few months before (see: Liyan Cluster Report), while avoiding to be involved in any way in the power struggles occurring inside the cluster.
The Ananke reached its destination after one day, immediately beginning medium range scans and collecting data from every satellite in the area. After few days of analysis, we've been able to establish that the satellite web was functioning inside the expected parameters, the only exception being SU N.34: the unit showed indeed signs of hacking attempts, surely after our last visit to the cluster. It was impossible to determine the origin of the attempt, and to link it to one of the local powers. Moreover, the fact that the attempt failed and the traces it left behind led our Engineering Department to concur that it was used a rather primitive device, compared to the previous attempts. As such, it is possible that the hackers did not come from one of the major local powers. However, it seems clear that interference from local powers has not ceased yet. In this case, I reiterate the recommendations made in my previous report.
After finishing our patrol duties, we laid course for DS13. However, in stardate 93098.2 we detected a distress signal coming from a position not far from us. We changed our course to intercept the source of the signal, which was identified a stranded freighter, the Palumki. Anti-matter containment had failed, and there was a serious risk of warp core breach. Damages were extensive, and many crewmembers were injured. We immediately began rescue, evacuating the freighter as a precautionary measure before trying to fix the problem. At leat, our engineers were able to restore anti-matter containment, thus sensibly decreasing the risks of a core breach. With the injured in sick bay, and the other crewmembers still on board the Ananke, I ordered the freighter to be towed through a tractor beam, before resuming course for DS13, where we arrived in stardate 93100.9.
The freighter personnel has been thus moved on board the station, and the Palumki itself has been left into the hands of DS13 engineers.
