Ecosystem

Planet is in the process of a Runaway Greenouse Effect which has seen all mammalian life killed off and a thriving increase of activity from the cold-blooded wildlife.

Known Wildlife

Spoiler: HerbivoresShow
These can be anything really, as they will just be prey that the PCs and predators can hunt and eat. The below are just a few examples and not an exhaustive list.

LldDnJil.jpg
A bigger creature that's basically an alien deer.

8lOcRWXl.jpg
A smaller creature that's meant to be a lizard-rabbit.

pyS9ftzl.png
A tree-climber. There will probably be lots of tree-climbing creatures around, seeing as it's a jungle environment.

Spoiler: ScavangersShow
0jwtm8al.jpg

These are your typical scavengers, essentially an amphibious equivalent of a mouse. They are very agile but not a threat as they can't do much to harm a larger being. Occasionally they may try to steal a bite before a predator is finished eating, but they generally steer clear of anything bigger than themselves.

These little monkey-like creatures are actually amphibians and are a cross between monkeys and frogs. They can climb trees, jump, run and swim, making them notoriously difficult to catch. This is a big problem as these creatures are not only scavengers, but like Earth's monkeys, they are also very good thieves, often making off with something that does not belong to them, sometimes doing so simply because it amuses them.

Spoiler: HuntersShow
ZxnJWkal.jpg

The Hunters are pack animals, essentially analogous to Earth's wolves and about the same size as them as well. They typically live in groups from 4 to 16; though smaller and larger groups are not unheard of, any lone Hunter turns into easy prey as their strength lies in numbers. While an individual Hunter possesses an excellent sense of smell and fast movement that allow them to track and pounce, their jaws are designed for gripping small creatures, which are usually even faster. A Hunter's tongue is long, flexible and ends in a bony point, but this attack requires precision and is rarely able to deal fatal damage if locked in combat with something of its size or larger.

Thus, the Hunters work together when they need to bring down bigger prey. Their jaws can hold down limbs as effectively as it can grasp critters, and while their teammates immobilize a single target, other Hunters utilize their tongues for a deadly finishing move. The Hunters' biggest weakness is not having enough numbers (relative to their enemies) to pull off this strategy.

Spoiler: Swarm BatsShow
i2gsf22l.jpg

The Swarm Bats, like Hunters, operate in groups but massive ones. They are about the size of a bat and operate similar to one as well, using echolocation to find their way as they possess no eyes. True to the name, they overwhelm their prey with sheer numbers, swarming them from all directions and biting their sharp teeth into every inch of skin available. They also feed on smaller creatures like insects, but when it comes to large prey, they rarely consume much of the meat, instead preferring to suck the blood dry and only tear off what they can before flying off, leaving the rest behind for scavengers.

Swarm Bats, due to their tactics, are susceptible to wide beam phaser attacks, but their numbers are usually so high that this will only stop the first wave while the rest begin moving around and flanking. Their only true weakness is loud, high-pitched noises which hurt their sensitive ears and disrupt their echolocation, forcing them to retreat or slam into trees.

Spoiler: TrappersShow
Unidentified-Person.png

No one really knows what a trapper's body looks like. Trappers defy classification; they are mostly plant-like, but possess a nervous system and sensory organs. They also do not undergo photosynthesis as there is practically no light in the undergrowth, instead drawing their resources from the soil alone.

The closest analogy for a Trapper would be the Venus Flytrap, but unlike the Venus Flytrap it does not actually feed on its victims. When an unsuspecting victim steps on a Trapper, which is usually covered in leaves, the heightened sensory functions of the Trapper allow it to react with extreme speed and grasp the prey with tentacles. It then pulls its victim into a large sac that it floods with water, but it does not drown the victim, instead forcing the seed into the victim via the water. Once enough time has passed and it has assumed the seed is consumed, the victim is shot out using the remaining liquid as a hydraulic mechanism.

The seed then begins to grow inside the victim as a parasite, slowly eating it from inside out until the host dies. The seedling takes root where the host has fallen, usually a significant distance away from its parent. The remains of its former host is then consumed by the new Trapper for resources that allow it to fully mature, and the cycle begins anew.

Spoiler: Steve (Stalker)Show
rR8EPRVl.jpg

Steve is classified as a stalker. Stalkers are the alpha predators of the jungle. They are powerful, solitary creatures the length of a Siberian tiger but much lighter, allowing them to move both faster and quieter. While formidable in a fight, they prefer to play a long game of waiting for the perfect opportunity to pounce. With the ability to climb trees and move in almost complete silence, the Stalker can follow prey for days without them even noticing, though they normally do not need that long to take something down. All of their senses are also highly perceptive and allow them to notice when its prey is starting to get suspicious and adjust accordingly.

The Stalker has several weapons when going in for the kill. Its jaws, like that of the Hunters, are designed for gripping small prey, but its razor-sharp claws can easily slit the throat of something larger. Its tail ends in a longer and sharper bony point than a Hunter's tongue, making it both effective for finishing an enemy and suitable for slashing with if the Stalker ever loses the element of surprise. In addition to stealth, a Stalker also has the ability to use mimicry to lure in prey.

Along with mimicry, Stalkers can modify their voices to emit shrieks that drive off Swarmers, and their size makes them susceptible to only the largest Trappers. The one thing in the jungle that can take down a Stalker in a fight is a well-coordinated pack of Hunters whose teeth can manage to hold the Stalker's spiny limbs, but Stalkers are generally too elusive to be put into that position. A Stalker's only true weakness is light; its eyes must be extremely sensitive to light to see in the fog, and any bright light will temporarily blind it and cause it to retreat in panic. However, sustaining a fire is very difficult in the extremely humid environment.
