NARRATIVE: During the course of our standard border patrol in the company of USS Midway & Nightingale, we encountered a vessel of unknown origin travelling at low warp in our general direction. Moving to intercept, our long range scans first confirmed that the vessel was relatively underdeveloped by Federation standards but still within criteria for establishing contact and so we opened a dialogue with the vessel. We were met with the visual feed from the alien vessel - presumably it's commanding officer - who introduced himself as United Koa Expeditionary Fleet Commander Maceum Tygoren Silime [once the universal translator had gained sufficient data to produce a translation]. A brief but amenable dialogue ensued where the Commander advised us of his peoples procedures for first contact; which apparently involved directing newly encountered species to their homeworld in the possession of a code which would confirm them as friendly.
Following deliberation between the present Commanding Officers, we diverted to the designated system as it was not far from our present position. Upon arrival in the system, we were met by a a [comparatively] sizable defense force who challenged our presence; though immediately ceased their advance when presented with the code we were provided and communications were opened. This led to another cordial and increasingly bureaucratic dialogue before we were directed through a set of very specific instructions to our beam in.
On the ground we were met by Officer of Extraplanetary Affairs Reyol Dolam Vorsane, who was prompt in his processing of our arrival procedures which included an obligatory medical scan. From this point, my accounting is limited since the scan resulted in myself and Captain Vel being identified as some form of biohazard and being immediately beamed out to an emergency treatment centre. From the away teams accounting, the situation was quickly established as a misinterpretation of medical information due to the fact that the Koans are mono-gendered and had no concept of symbiosis; yet they did have a historical problem with a parasitic species on their planet and so considered us both to be infected. The explanation of Trill physiology soon expedited Captain Vel's release before any harm came to either her or the symbiont.
For my own situation, it transpired that I was in the early stages of pregnancy [with initial signs only beginning to show recently, i had no prior knowledge of this], and it was the fetus that their scans had identified as a parasitic lifeform. Under sedation, I had been sent immediately into their facility where they began a procedure on me; believing they were working to save a visiting aliens life. Though I possess neither the memory or scientific understanding to adequately detail this procedure, my basic understanding is that their usual extraction process for foregone due to the perceived complexity of my 'parasite' in it's shared DNA with me as it's host. This resulted in their use of an accelerated maturation process which - somehow - progressed us both through the physical pregnancy in a matter of hours and brought the baby to suitable maturity for birthing.
By the time I was revived, our away team had settled the misunderstanding and, well, my child had been born. I am again at a loss to explain the science, but the procedure left both myself and the child unharmed; though no risk was taken with aftercare as we both reported for complete medical workups once back on board the ship, and a team from the Koan medical facility have remained on board with us pending any unforeseen circumstances.
RECOMMENDATION: Continued close medical monitoring for both myself and the baby [registered: t'pia se'lai]. An amenable relationship was reached with the Koan's which should be built upon. They come across as relatively new to space exploration [although informing us that their first warp flight was 300 cycles ago, our analysis shows they are a relatively short lived species so this may not equate so directly into a standard measure], and so it is recommended above all that a dedicated team from the diplomatic corps. is dispatched to the Koan system to continue forging the established relationship.
