BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS

Cyrene was born Stardate 70688.1 (September 9th, 2393) on the Trill homeworld to Hielef and Morget Mavil. They resided in Gheryzan at the time, on the planet's Eastern hemisphere. There was already one son, who was aged three at the time of Cyrene's birth, and later, bore another child, a daughter, two years later.

They lived in Gheryzan until Morget was offered a position with the Trill Science Ministry, which she eagerly accepted, moving her family to Leran Manev. Morget gained a position as a Research Scientist in the field of Astrophysics. Hielef took up a position on the grounds as a Gardener.

Cyrene's parents were well-situated, and Cyrene was fortunate enough to have many opportunities growing up. She had many chances to be exposed to a Joined Trill who was a friend of the family, and it created a great sense of ambition within her. Even as a child, she was an overachiever.

The loss of a family pet solidified her desire to work with the health and well-being of creatures other than humanoids. She spent her schooling years taking additional biology and zoology classes, and loading up on as many research projects as she could. She also had a habit of bringing home any rescued animals as she could convince her parents to let her take, including those with medicinal values.

It was to no one's surprise when she decided to major in zoology and microbiology, what surprised everyone, was her choice to attend Starfleet Academy, rather than to stay on Trill. Having her career take the path to Starfleet Medical and expand her knowledge to treating as many forms of life as she could encompass was only surprising in that it was a lot of interaction with sapient species!

She continued her research career well into medical school, participating in whatever studies she could find time for, adding to her resume and her experience with both laboratory techniques and publications. By the time she graduated, she had determined to be a generalist. She had experience in general diagnosis, basic emergency medicine, non-specialized forms of surgery, and a vast array of knowledge regarding medicating humanoid species and non. She had also amassed a small collection of medically significant creatures as ‘pets,’ but more importantly, as part of an alternative medicine collection.

As she enters her first year of post-graduate residency, she finds herself preparing for the challenge of tackling whatever species is brought to her. In the case of many animals, she will be expected to be diagnostician, surgeon, internal medicine specialist and pathologist all in one!

NOTES: In brief, Cyrene exhibits many traits found in a Trill hoping to be found suitable for Joining candidacy. She is a rampant overachiever, but has enough dedication and work ethic to live up to the number of commitments she has put upon herself so far. Her ability to gauge work-life balance is lacking, but she is seemingly open to the idea of time for herself.

2215 | Graduated from Kem’alta Institute with a specialization in law. Continued on to study minutiae of law.
2216 | Joined to the Ori symbiont.
2217 | Became a practitioner and researcher in copyright law.
Began working towards a political base.
2225 | Gained enough prestige to become a member of local Council.
2240 | Became a member of the ruling council’s advisory board; chief of staff to one of the Counselors.
2250 | Died in a shuttle accident traveling between estates.
BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS

Aeron and Koray Berr were the proud parents of several children, Aeron himself being Joined. Jervil was the middle child of three and spent much of his time either watching the youngest or chasing after the oldest. As they all grew older, he became the peacemaker between the three, the one who saw balance between the children.

This attitude carried into his later years, standing him good stead in school years and later. He found himself endlessly fascinated by the intricacies of social interaction and the way society functioned. A charismatic youth, he found it easy to gather large groups of friends and influence them to do what he wanted. This occasionally backfired when he turned to childish pranks, of course, but in general, he was an obedient youth.

Jervil attended law school with an eye to a political career from the beginning, hoping to put his talents to good use. While he hadn’t established himself in a career as yet, his exceptional charisma and political ambitions made him a prime candidate for Joining.

Once Joined to the Ori symbiont and having completed his law degree, he began a successful career in copyright law. It wasn’t the most impressive career, but what it did was allow him to begin a grassroots campaign to allow him to get to know his local constituency.

During this period, he met and married his spouse, Tae Corrie. Over the years, she supported his political career, being a pleasant face for the public and an understanding wife in private. The two had a single child, named Levla, who went on to become a writer.

By dint of much effort and campaigning, supported by his law career, Jervil managed to work his way into local positions, and then greater and greater influence. Eventually, he became the Chief of Staff to one of the Counselors of the ruling Council of Trill.

His career might have grown even higher had it not been cut short by a terrible shuttlecraft accident. His body was recovered in enough time to save the symbiont, but not the host.

BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS

Patrycja came from a family that had a history of sending off children to be Joined, but originally, she was not interested in such a path. The only thing that interested her was working with computers. Tinkering with drives and memory chips from the moment she could handle them without slicing herself on tiny parts, Patrycja grew facile at their usage from an early age.

She pursued her dream avidly at the Kam’alta Institute, and almost fell into the Symbiosis program. Meeting a Joined Trill named Darje Cha, she found she rather liked the blend of personalities that came from a symbiotic mind. It inspired her to not only spend her time in studies, but to apply to the Commission as well. By the time she graduated, she was steadily within the program and successfully proving her dedication.

She celebrated her first anniversary with Darje Cha by accepting the Ori symbiont.

Astro-Navigational computers were Patrycja’s passion, and she spent her lifetime designing them. Trill ships had improved designs, thanks to her work. After 30 years of sharing her life with the Ori symbiont, her career changed from designing the computers themselves, to teaching others to carry on her work. The Kem’alta Institute took her on as an instructor, and she had as much passion about sharing her skills with others as she exercised it.

In 2315, she retired from teaching to spend the rest of her life in her home, quietly. Neighborhood children remembered her as kind, enjoying gardening and tinkering with windchimes she build out of computer parts.

BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Hera was always known as a solitary person, even as a child. Although her parents, Trovia and Nien Suver, had a number of children, she gained a reputation for withholding herself. The third of six, Hera was the middle child and often found herself in a perfect position to withdraw into obscurity.

This lasted until she reached sixteen, and declared her intent to pursue a Starfleet career. The shy, solitary child burst into a determined, studious and ambitious teenager that out-competed her fellows for several academic honors and opportunities to reach her goal. In addition, she applied to Initiate Program shortly after graduating with two degrees, at the age of twenty-two.

At the age of twenty-three, she received the Ori symbiont and flourished in her career as an engineer, although she mostly participated in warp engine design and theoretical engineering research.

After a long career in design and research, Hera retired to a home on Trill and took up entomology as a hobby. She spent her ‘golden years’ happily digging in dirt and bushes, collecting specimens. Eventually, Hera grew familiar with many of the native species of her planet, and when she passed, she donated the planet’s largest collection of preserved aphids to a local university.

BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Born to two unJoined parents, Krea and Tuvor, Ianon was an only child. He grew up with a love and fascination that worried his parents: fire. As he reached maturity, he found a way to turn his adoration of flame into a scientific career, by studying the molten expellations of the very planets. His enthusiasm and growing expertise encouraged his parents to guide him towards the Symbiont Initiate Program. Much to his surprise, he was selected for the Ori symbiont. Joined, he excelled even more in his chosen field, the confidence and calm he received from the Joining bringing him a certain steadiness required in a dangerous field.

After becoming a member of the Trill Science Ministry, he met the woman who would become his wife. Rhea Stephor, one of the only non-Trill to participate in a research program sponsored by the Trill Science Ministry, is a botanist. The two married after a short courtship and had the opportunity for several joint scientific expeditions, until their child was born. Afterwards, Rhea and their daughter, Suyeon, spent most of their time on Betazed while Ianon continued his scientific work.

At the age of 62, Ianon was leading a team of geologists throughout the Alpha quadrant, studying various volcanic activities and comparing from planet to planet. During a visit to the Hawaiin Islands on Earth, Ianon had a severe accident. The symbiont survived, but the host had to be transported to the Trill homeworld to have the symbiont removed to the next host.

Spoiler: Bacterial loads of Salmonella sandiego in common pet turtles, 2411Show

Abstract:

Salmonella in pet turtles from Earth has remained prevalent despite hundreds of years of eradication efforts. The handling of pet turtles in captivity is a vector for Salmonella infections in humans and several other species of humanoid. Fifty-seven pet turtles were obtained from commercial sources and kept in humanoid care for a period of sixty days and examined to determine if an individual was a carrier of a Salmonella spp. If so, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to determine exact species of the bacteria, with the total load of Salmonella sandiego being calculated from the result. The conclusion indicated that there was a high percentage of overall Salmonella spp. infections in the population, while specifically, the Salmonella sandiego subspecies was 38%, whereas the majority of cases were more evenly scattered between the indica and enterica subspecies. These results determines the risk of salmonellosis in pet turtles commonly obtained by pet store purchase.

Keywords: Prevalence, pet turtles, Salmonella sandiego

Salmonella sandiego is a subspecies of Salmonella spp., gram negative coccobacilli associated with water-borne and food-borne pathogens responsible for a variety of diseases that affect both humanoids and animals.

Reptiles are asymptomatic carriers of Salmonella spp. infection and intermittently shed the organisms in their feces [2,3,4,5]. Humanoids are susceptible to infection from these excreted organisms, making reptiles a potential source of zoonotic disease. Incubation from infection requires 6-48 hours, before clinical symptoms appear. They include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, stomachache and diarrhea, while S. enterica serovar Enteritidis and S. enterica serovar Typhimurium, which are nontyphoidal salmonellosis, include symptoms of acute gastroenteritis [6]. Typically, symptoms in healthy adults resolve within three days.

Often, humanoid cases of salmonellosis are associated with foodborne illness, but frequently, there are cases when a humanoid has handled a turtle shedding the bacteria, or it’s contaminated materials such as water and soil, with insufficient precautions [5,7]. Also, immune-compromised or otherwise at-risk persons such as babies, juveniles, pregnant women, elderly people and people with immunocompromising diseases are prone to Salmonella infection.

The association between salmonellosis and pet turtles motivated a ban in the country known as the United States in 1975 of any turtles whose carapace measured under 10.2 cm [8]. Eventually, this ban was taken up and became a United Earth policy. Administering antibiotics prior to hatching is known; however, the effects seem temporary and can cause antibiotic resistance. Since the bacteria can be transmitted through contaminated materials as well as with direct handling, owner failure to clean soil and water increases the chances of transmitting the disease.

The susceptibility of extremely young children is five times greater than adults, and so it is highly recommended that pet turtles are kept separate from such young children or immuno-compromised people. Education about the risks of salmonellosis is also vital from both pet stores and health care workers.

We studied the isolation rate of Salmonella sandiego from fecal samples of pet turtles obtained in pet shops as well as water and soil samples in their environment over time. This is the basis of risk assessment of infection by pet turtles and their environment from a public health standpoint.

Material and Methods

Purchase of Pet Turtles

Fifty eight turtles of 4 commercially popular species were purchased through twenty seven pet shops located in a variety of locations across Earth. The turtles had an average weight of 16±2 g, carapace diameter of 38±4mm and were under 4 weeks of age.

Among the 58 turtles, 18 yellow belly sliders (Trachemys scripta scripta), 14 western painted turtles (Chrysemys picta belli), 14 river cooters (Pseudmys concinna concinna) and 12 Chinese stripe-necked turtles (Ocadia sinensis) were studied.

Fecal Sample Collection

Each turtle was placed in a 500mL beaker of sterilized water for 24 hours. One mL of the distilled water containing the turtle’s feces was taken as a fecal sample. In order to prevent cross-contamination between individuals, gloves were used and changed between each handling of an animal.

Enrichment and Isolation of Salmonella spp.

The samples were cultured according to the Galactic Standard method. Samples were suspended in 5 mL sterile saline, and 1 mL of the suspension was inoculated into 9 mL of tetrathionate broth at 37°C for 24 hr. After incubation, the broth was mixed for 5 seconds with a Vortex agitator. One loopful of each tube was streaked onto a plate of selective media, brilliant green agar and xylose lysine deoxycholate. These plates were incubated at 37°C for 24hr. Colonies suspected of containing Salmonella spp. (pink-white colonies on BGA, black colonies on XLD) were inoculated and cultured in the other selective medium to isolate them.

Identification using 16S rRNA sequencing

All 24 strains of presumptive Salmonella spp. Were identified using 16S rRNA sequencing with the universal primers 27F and 1492R at Starfleet Medical, San Francisco.

Raising condition of pet turtles in cages

Each individual turtle had its own cage, due to species varieties and the number of pet shops frequented. The cages were consistent, each having a pebble and soil slope, 2 L of sterilized water made from a filtration system and a canister filter. Throughout the study, the change in isolation rate over time of Salmonella spp. was studied. This included skin, water, and soil samples. General husbandry guidelines determined feeding: Gammarus dried shrimp with calcium supplements fed twice a day, while water temperature was kept with 26±2°C, pH 6.5-8.2 and 12 hr of photoperiod each day were maintained during the experiment.

Isolation rate of Salmonella spp. from environment over time

In order to collect data regarding the environment and the presence of Salmonella spp. over time, each day, water and soil samples were collected from each of the fifty eight cages for 10 days. Five grams of soil from a turtle’s rest or feeding area were collected using a sterile spoon and incubated in 10mL of TTB. Ten milliliters of water were obtained from each cage using a sterile pipette and suspended at room temperature for 10 minutes. Afterwards, one milliliter of the precipitate was inoculated in 9 mL of TTB, which was incubated at 37°C for 24hr in enrichment media. The method of enrichment and isolation was done by the same method as the fecal sample.

Results

Isolation and Identification of Salmonella sandiego from fecal samples

Salmonella spp. were isolated from 27 (50.0%) of the fifty seven turtle fecal samples; however, only 9 of those samples contained Salmonella sandiego (Table 1). Of those nine, positive samples were found in four of the Western painted turtles (Chrysemys picta belli), three of the river cooters (Pseudemys concinna concinna), and one each of the Chinese stripe-necked turtles (Ocadia sinensis) and yellow-belly sliders (Trachemys scripta scripta).

lcars24_000.png

Isolation rate of Salmonella sandiego from environment over time

The isolation rate of the Salmonella spp. increased over time. Salmonella sandiego was no exception. On day two, 7 soil samples and 6 water samples were contaminated with Salmonella sandiego; however, by day 10, 18 soil samples and 21 water samples were contaiminated with the subspecies, demonstating the spread of the organism. In addition, the Salmonella spp., by the end of the 10 days, had contaminated 37 water samples and 28 soil samples, indicating that most of the cages were contaminated over time.
