Minabi is a non-joined Trill, born and raised originally on Trill until her thirst for adventure led her to the stars. She always had a knack for engines, construction, and technology, but it did not always lead to pleasant outcomes. A bit of a rebel, she ran into several problems with citations for unruly behavior in her youth amassing and leading her parents to try counseling. While mainly focused on machinery and technology, Minabi was no stranger to humanoid interactions and managed to convince the counselor the sessions were pointless but used the time of the sessions to hook up with a crew of a smuggler freighter that ran past Trill every couple of weeks.
She eventually absconded with the smugglers and dove deep into a life of quasi-legal standings. It might have ended in jail-time for her, but during the time with these smugglers, something drastic happened. In a classic case of wrong time, wrong place, she and her smuggling friends were caught in a Spatial Anomaly which disabled their ship and left it disabled and the crew unconscious. Records show an alarming gap of 4 years (from her 16th to 20th year) where she is unaccounted for with her and several others being found 4 years later in an abandoned mining facility during a routine patrol of a Federation Starship.
For herself, she does not remember anything of that time. Images and flashbacks occasionally happen during nightmares, but she suppresses them skillfully because they terrify her and don't make a lot of sense. When she returned, she was a changed woman. Apart from retaining several scars from whatever adventures she had in during the time that is basically missing from her memory, her attitude had shifted to law-abiding and seeking to further the cause of the Federation and Starfleet. She immediately sought to join Starfleet, accepting even the most limiting conditions due to her old age when she joined the academy.
Exemplary service since then has led her on a quick rise through the ranks, reaching the rank of Captain and a commission to the U.S.S. Kassandra recently. The only slightly curious exception in her otherwise flawless record at Starfleet is a note from her first Commanding Officer, citing a glint of dangerous zeal while dealing with a hostage situation during a routine assignment. It is noted clearly that she did not engage in any undue behavior, but the captain did see fit to include a notice of her behavior and a recommendation for further counseling in her file, which she attended to. The Counselor of the vessels she served on prior all concluded that she had remarkable mental fortitude and no cause for alarm was warranted.
