LOCATION: DEEP SPACE 13 13, V774 TAU, ALDEBARAN SECTOR

MISSION: ASSESS DAMAGE TO STARBASE AND DETERMINE REPAIR ROADMAP

OUTCOME: WE BORE WITNESS TO THE WOUNDS SUFFERED BY THE STATION, DRAINED THE LAST OF ITS LIFEBLOOD, AND STOPPED THE BEATING OF ITS HEART. YET MARK MY WORDS: DEEP SPACE 13 WILL RISE AGAIN.

NARRATIVE: WITH HEAVY HEARTS DID WE SET OUT FOR THE BATTLEFIELD, SITE OF OUR RECENT IGNOMINIOUS DEFEAT AT THE HANDS OF THE AZEDI AND THE JUNAYD. DEEP WAS OUR SHAME, YET FIRMER OUR RESOLVE TO RETAKE OUR HOME AND AVENGE OUR FALLEN COMRADES. NO ADVERSARIES REMAINED TO CHALLENGE US UPON OUR RETURN BUT ENTROPY ITSELF, SO IT WAS UPON ENTROPY THAT WE CHOSE TO MAKE WAR.

SENSORS CONFIRMED INITIAL REPORTS: THE STATION'S SPINE WAS BROKEN IN THREE PLACES, SEVERED BY SAVAGE STRIKES BY OUR AZEDI FOES. FURTHER ANALYSIS FOUND OVERALL HULL INTEGRITY TO BE 32% AND THE SPACEFRAME ITSELF CRITICALLY COMPROMISED BY THESE STRIKES. ALL APPEARED LOST, YET THE UNFLAPPABLE COMMANDER T'IRIN DEMONSTRATED HER VULCAN FORTITUDE IN REMINDING YOUR CHRONICLER THAT A TRUE WARRIOR NEVER FORFEITS IN THE FACE OF INSURMOUNTABLE ODDS.

THE BOARDING PARTY'S FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS WAS TO TAKE THE LAST REMAINING FUSION REACTOR OFFLINE, LEST FURTHER STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE COMPROMISE IT. AS COMMANDER T'IRIN AND I SAW TO THIS TASK, OTHERS SET ABOUT THE RETRIEVAL OF STATION LOG DATA. WITH THE REACTOR OFFLINE, THE ATLANTIS BEGAN DRAINING THE CONTENTS OF THE DEUTERIUM AND ANTIMATTER TANKS. THE BOARDING PARTY BEGAN TO ASCEND.

SLOWLY, WE MADE OUR WAY THROUGH THE WRECKAGE, PAST BULKHEADS RIPPED APART BY EXPLOSIONS AND THROUGH CORRIDORS EXPOSED TO THE HUNGRY VOID. AT TIMES WE WERE FORCED TO WADE THROUGH THE DEAD, SUSPENDED IN MICROGRAVITY LIKE GRISLY CURTAINS. WE TAGGED AND RECORDED THOSE WHOM WE COULD IDENTIFY, SO THAT THEIR HONORABLE DEATHS COULD BE REPORTED TO THEIR KIN.

WE EXAMINED EACH OF THE THREE BREAKS IN THE SPACEFRAME IN TURN, EMPLOYING EXOCOMPS TO PERFORM DETAILED SCANS OF ALL EXPOSED MACROFILAMENT TRUSSES FOR LATER ANALYSIS. GRADUALLY, HOPE BEGAN TO CREEP INTO THIS WARRIOR'S HEART. ALTHOUGH THE DAMAGE WAS EXTENSIVE, WE COULD NOW SEE THAT REPAIRS MIGHT BE POSSIBLE. DEEP SPACE 13 COULD LIVE AGAIN.

A ROMULAN IMPERIAL ACCOMPANIED THIS MISSION FOR SOME REASON. HIS PURPOSE WAS NOT EXPLAINED, AND I SAW HIM DO NOTHING USEFUL.

CONCLUSIONS: THE STARBASE IS CRITICALLY DAMAGED AND STRUCTURALLY UNSOUND. NO REPAIRS TO POWER OR SYSTEMS ARE POSSIBLE UNTIL THE SUPERSTRUCTURE IS MENDED. A SUMMARY OF DAMAGED MATERIALS FOLLOWS:

IT IS THE DETERMINATION OF THE DEEP SPACE 13 ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT IN EXILE THAT THE STATION CAN BE REPAIRED. THAT WHICH THEY THOUGHT SLAIN WILL PUMP PLASMA AGAIN. IN CONSULTATION WITH SENIOR ENGINEERS WITHIN AND WITHOUT THE DEPARTMENT, I SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING ROADMAP AND THE RECOMMENDATION THAT WE PURSUE IT WITH VIGOR.

  1. CLEAR AND RECYCLE DEBRIS FIELD
    THIS MAELSTROM OF CHAOTIC PROJECTILES PRESENTS THE MOST IMMEDIATE THREAT TO OUR CAMPAIGN AGAINST ENTROPY. IT MUST BE CLEARED BEFORE ANY MAJOR WORK CAN COMMENCE. WE SHOULD CAPTURE AND RECYCLE AS MUCH OF THE DEBRIS AS POSSIBLE, BECAUSE IT IS COMPOSED LARGELY OF THE SAME MATERIALS WE WILL REQUIRE IN OUR CONSTRUCTION EFFORTS.

  2. BUILD SCAFFOLDING STRUCTURE
    ONCE THE DEBRIS FIELD IS CLEARED, WE WILL CONSTRUCT A SUPPORT FRAMEWORK AROUND THE STATION, SECURING IT AGAINST FURTHER STRUCTURAL DEGRADATION AND GIVING REPAIR TEAMS A PLATFORM FOR ALL WORK TO FOLLOW.

  3. STRIP HULL AND INTERNAL STRUCTURE AWAY FROM DAMAGED SPACEFRAME SECTIONS
    NEXT, WE MUST TEAR DOWN BEFORE WE CAN BUILD AGAIN. WE MUST FLENSE FLESH FROM BONE. MOST OF THE STATION'S HULL AND SIGNIFICANT SECTIONS OF ITS INTERIOR WILL NEED TO BE DISASSEMBLED. THIS WILL INCLUDE ALL DAMAGED SUBSTRUCTURAL ELEMENTS AND ANY UNDAMAGED ELEMENTS WHICH ATTACH TO DAMAGED SUPERSTRUCTURAL ELEMENTS. ALL MATERIALS SHOULD BE RECYCLED FOR REUSE IN LATER CONSTRUCTION.

  4. REMOVE, RECYCLE AND REPLACE DAMAGED SPACEFRAME STRUCTURE
    THEN WE BEGIN REPLACEMENT OF MACROFILMENT TRUSSES THROUGHOUT DAMAGED SECTIONS OF THE STATION, REBUILDING PRIMARY AND SECONDARY FRAMEWORKS TO RESTORE STRUCTURAL STABILITY TO THE STARBASE.

  5. RESTORE POWER
    ONCE THE STRUCTURE IS SOUND, WE MAY REINSTALL REACTORS AND BATTERIES TO ASSIST IN POWERING FURTHER REPAIRS. THIS STAGE WILL ALSO INVOLVE MOUNTING FUEL TANKS WITHIN THE SUPERSTRUCTURE AND REBUILDING THE PRIMARY EPDN.

  6. REBUILD INTERNAL STRUCTURE
    NOW THE SECTIONS TORN DOWN IN STAGE 2, OR DESTROYED IN BATTLE, MAY BE REBUILT ON THE STABLE SPACEFRAME WITH THE BENEFIT OF ONBOARD POWER. BY THE END OF THIS STAGE THE SKELETON OF THE STATION WILL BE INTACT AND WORK ON STAGES 7, 8 AND 9 CAN PROCEED IN PARALLEL EXCEPT WHERE WORK ON ONE WILL INTERFERE WITH ANOTER. THEY ARE LISTED IN PRIORITY ORDER.

  7. RESTORE ESSENTIAL SYSTEMS
    LIFE SUPPORT, COMPUTER CORES, SHIELD GENERATORS, WATER STORAGE, WASTE RECLAMATION AND ENGINEERING FACILITIES ARE CONSTRUCTED IN THIS STAGE. BY ITS END, THE STATION IS ALIVE AGAIN, IF NOT QUITE AS MIGHTY AS IT ONCE WAS.

  8. REPAIR/REPLACE HULL PLATING
    THIS STAGE GIRDS THE STATION IN ARMOR, PREPARING IT FOR BATTLE ONCE AGAIN. CONSTRUCTION ON SECTIONS OF THE HULL MAY BE DELAYED BY THE NECESSITY OF MOVING LARGE SYSTEM COMPONENTS INTO THE STATION INTERIOR, PARTICULARLY FOR ESSENTIAL SYSTEMS DESCRIBED ABOVE. ONCE THIS STAGE IS COMPLETED, THE STATION WILL BE CLOSED TO THE VOID ONCE AGAIN.

  9. RESTORE NON-ESSENTIAL SYSTEMS AND FACILITIES
    ALL REMAINING SYSTEMS AND FACILITIES ARE BUILT OUT IN THIS STAGE. WHERE POSSIBLE, UNDAMAGED COMPONENTS WILL BE REUSED. THIS STAGE TAKES DEEP SPACE 13 FROM A MINIMALLY FUNCTIONAL SHELL OF ITS FORMER SELF TO A FULLY ARMED AND OPERATIONAL BATTLESTATION.

  10. TEARDOWN SCAFFOLDING STRUCTURE
    HAVING SERVED ITS PURPOSE, THE SCAFFOLD WILL BE DISMANTLED FOLLOWING INSTALLATION OF ALL MAJOR SYSTEMS AND COMPLETION OF THE HULL ENCLOSURE. MATERIALS FROM THE SCAFFOLD CAN THEN BE RECYCLED FOR USE IN THE COMPLETION OF NON-ESSENTIAL SYSTEMS AND FACILITIES.
