BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Alyx Jaimie Derenzis' childhood interest in Starfleet was sparked by seeing her mother in the gold uniform of security; but it wasn't until her schooling that the interest became a passion. She learned about how the Enterprise had saved her homeworld back in 2368; of the crew's ingenuity and their captain's perseverance and leadership. Starfleet was a place where heroes worked. Add to this her father's influence as a scientist, and Alyx's path was set: with her parents' blessing and support, she left Penthara IV for Earth, and Starfleet Academy, in 2401.
Alyx graduated in 2405, majoring in marine biology and marine xenoanthropology, but showed an aptitude for command. She went on to serve for almost five years aboard the USS Devonian (Nova class), including a year-long survey of planets in the Hromi Cluster. On Stardate 86798.8, the Devonian was attacked by a Klingon Bird of Prey; in the ensuing battle, a torpedo struck the section where Alyx was stationed. With her immediate C.O. unconscious and communications with the bridge down, Alyx found herself trapped with her C.O. and two Ensigns between a plasma fire contained by a forcefield on one side and an emergency bulkhead on the other. Alyx took charge of the situation, getting the ensigns to open the bulkhead long enough for them to slip through, and carrying her C.O.'s unconscious form to safety before the forcefield collapsed and the bulkhead re-sealed. For this, she was awarded the Starfleet Decoration for Gallantry.
With the encouragement of the Devonian's executive officer, Alyx returned to Starfleet Academy to study for the Command Track, completing her training in 2411 with a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and assignment to the USS Tethys (Luna class) as deputy science officer. She served in this position for three years, including two years surveying M, L, and O class planets bordering the Pipe Bowl Nebula (Barnard 78). By 2414, Alyx had been made part of the bridge crew.
Disaster struck on Stardate 91332.8 when an Iconian cruiser found and engaged the Tethys as a target of opportunity during the initial invasion. From logs and recordings salvaged, it became clear that the Tethys' captain had made several critical errors at the start of the battle, and had frozen up completely as the situation worsened. His X.O. took over at that point and tried to salvage the situation, but by then the Tethys had sustained too much damage to continue fighting. The X.O. and most of the bridge crew were killed shortly thereafter. Only Alyx and Captain Rexel survived among the bridge crew. In total, 207 of the ship's complement of 350 had been killed, and the ship itself crippled beyond recovery. Captain Rexel suffered a complete nervous breakdown in the aftermath, which Alyx had the misfortune of seeing up close and personal. After the survivors were rescued and returned to Federation space, Rexel was formally discharged and committed to a psychological hospital for treatment. To Alyx's knowledge, he is still there.
Alyx herself was reassigned to the USS Triangulum (Galaxy class) ten days after the loss of the Tethys, with the posting of Chief Science Officer, and served the bulk of the war in support and relief efforts to planets ravaged by the Iconians. She began seeing a counsellor during this time to deal with the devastation she witnessed on her former ship. After the war ended and Starfleet began to rebuild, the Triangulum's executive officer accepted a promotion and command of a new starship, and Alyx was made executive officer in her stead. From 2415 to 2417, Alyx served as X.O. to the best of her ability during rebuilding efforts and pirate patrols; and she continued with counselling sessions, gradually healing from the trauma of the war.
