LOCATION: Kelterre II, Kelterre Sector

MISSION: Investigate lost communication of probes previously positioned to study small unknown robots dubbed “Oribots” located in the planet's oceans.

OUTCOME: Probes had been used as raw resources by the Oribots. Oribots under continued observation.

KEY PERSONNEL:
CAPT A. Nimitz
CMDR S. al Firawn
CMDR P Aubrey
CMDR J. Kermit
LCDR E. Kermit

NARRATIVE: After loosing contact with the probes launched in a previous visit, the USS Asimov (please note additional personnel as listed above) was dispatched to investigate. After arrival the crew attempted to locate the lost probes. Two were discovered by their transponder codes. These two probes had been moved from their original position and were positioned together. The crew launched a modified probe to get a better view of the situation and attempt to find the third, as yet still missing probe.

During the probe modification and launching process, CAPT Nimitz contacted the research team planet side for further information. The research team confirmed the situation, but could offer little other information.

Through the new probe the crew observed the Oribots. The machines had grown in number and showed a remarkable capability for organized activity. It was hypothesized that the Oribots required direct physical contact to communicate as no signals were detected between them. The Oribots actions were viewed for some time. Their actions included: processing seaweed, mining the surrounding rock for resources, organizing into organized “sheets” (for communication?) and re-configuring themselves into conjoined small boxes that created more Oribots. These boxes were small, as noted later by one crewman, they were “..not much bigger than a mess hall replicator.” All Oribot actions were deemed environmentally safe. It appeared that the original probes has also been re-purposed by the Oribots for their own use.

The crew decided to “tag” a selection of the Oribots to study their movements and interactions. Several dermal tracker patches were modified for this task. Three of the Oribots were “tagged” for further study. The newest probe was removed from the ocean and a satellite was tasked with keeping track of the Oribots.

RECOMMENDATION: All officers involved agreed to continue the plan of the previous mission. The Oribots on planet should be watched and studied. There should also be a follow up with the specimens taken in the previous mission. At this time, the Oribots still do not seem to pose any danger to the research team on the planet or to the planet itself.

OOC: This is the AAR for “Unfolding” event, hosted Sept. 27th. Thank you to Katriel for running the event and to everyone else for participating!
