BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Part of the Mark II line of Zahir Cybernetics exploratory units, Amset is an artificial intelligence based on HORUS, the machine superintelligence which Zahir claims will one day be capable of handling all responsibilities of a starship crew single-handedly. In order to gather field data and experiment with different approaches to interacting with alien species, HORUS has curated four "offspring" personas, each of which represents a limited subset of the parent construct. The Amset model is designed to have a curiosity about our emotional inner workings, and in order to facilitate its mandate to gather data, the android frame is fitted with a sophisticated suite of biometric sensors capable of reading subtle variations in the electrochemical processes of a living being.
After years of limited trials and proof-of-concept demonstrations, Starfleet agreed to allow live environment testing of the HORUS AIs in 2412. The following year, the Mark I line enrolled at Starfleet Academy to mixed results. Just two of the four units actually completed their accelerated courses of study and went on to receive commissions, of which the first Amset was one. Once deployed in the field, feedback on these first-gen units was that they were buggy and error-prone, liable to freeze or stutter when overwhelmed by circumstances. The Mark I line was retired at the end of 2415.
Having integrated the offspring units' experiences back into the core HORUS AI, Zahir claims that the glitches have been addressed and Starfleet has agreed to give the second generation units a chance. This time all four siblings finished their Academy coursework in early 2418, after which they were assigned to ESD, where a thorough service evaluation program had been prepared to test whether the new units were ready for field work. Thus far, they have performed capably, though some observers still question their versatility and resilience.
In early 2419, Amset Mk. II was assigned to serve as Operations Officer aboard the U.S.S. Brahe. Captain Sel has been asked to file regular reports to Starfleet Command on the performance of this unit relative to its organic crewmates.
