LOCATION: New Circini System, Kelterre Sector

MISSION: Investigate Azedi Presence in New Circini System

OUTCOME: Several Starfleet ships disabled, some Azedi vessels damaged or destroyed

KEY STARSHIPS:
USS Leyte Gulf (Operational Lead)
USS Albion
USS Appomattox
USS Avalon
USS Brahe
USS Brindisi
USS Inexpugnable
USS Saraswati
USS Scharnhorst
USS Sunrise
USS Vanguard
USS Wayfarer

NARRATIVE: Upon arriving in New Circini System, Kelterre Sector as part of a Task Force assigned to determine the strength, disposition, and intention of Azedi ships in New Circini, our vessel detected multiple Azedi starships within system but at distance from New Circini.

Communications traffic with New Circini and scans of same showed no immediate hostilities. Brahe attempted a multitude of scans to determine if the Azedi ships were preapring for an attack; however, none of the Brahe's sensors could penetrate the Azedi hulls.

After several attempts, the Leyte Gulf was able to briefly communicate with the Azedi ships, who denied any hostilities. Without warning, a multitude of Azedi-spawned wormholes opened. At approximately the same time, the Task Force was informed the Azedi had destroyed a Federation installation elsewhere and we were to open fire.

This vessel did not open fire, instead focusing its resources on using the Teleraptor to close wormholes thereby preventing Azedi reinforcements from entering the field. Brahe, in addition to some of the other science vessels, were successful in this effort.

Unfortunately, one wormhole opened directly proximate to this vessel. A metallic object, of approximately 10x5x18 meters, penetrated the shields and attached itself to the hull. Once in contact with the Brahe, the device began saturating the ship with Verteron Particles. Brahe attempted to reverse hull polarity and engage in erratic maneuvers to shake the device from the hull; neither efforts were successful. After only a few short moments, the Brahe's Engines, Shields, and Communications Systems were disabled.

Damage inflicted to the Brahe included a complete overload of the ship's field coils. As a collateral result of the field coils overloading, a plasma conduit in Main Engineering burst, causing substantial damage, injuries, and a partial evacuation of Deck 7. 18 members of the crew were wounded in the attack; fortunately, none fatally so.

Adrift, Brahe focused on regaining communications and power. Brahe succeeded in restoring communications by using one of its shuttlecraft, which did not appear affected by the Verteron Device; possibly because it was unpowered at the time. This could prove a possible countermeasure to these devices, if power to the field coils can be suspended until the device is removed from the hull.

Eventually, both the Azedi and Task Force withdrew from the field without the Azedi ships firing a single shot. Brahe was shortly thereafter returned to Deep Space 13 under tow.

Brahe's Engineering advises approximately 96 hours in total for repairs to be completed. This includes cleanup of the plasma breach, replacement of the field coils, and minor repairs to the hull.

RECOMMENDATION:
  • Recommend Command focus all available resources into investigating countermeasure to this new Azedi weapon.
  • A composite of Azedi hull should be studied to determine if there is a way to penetrate the an Azedi ship's hull. The tactical advantage of this information cannot be understated.

LOCATION: Ikmore System, Itrin Sector

MISSION: Launch a strike on military targets in the system.

OUTCOME: Objectives complete, military targets destroyed. Allied damage due to the use of a subspace distruption weapon, but no allied ship losses.

KEY PERSONNEL:
USS Pegasus (Task Force Lead)
USS Endeavour

RRW D'Ishae
RRW Saeihr

NARRATIVE: Following confirmation from Rear Admiral Konieczko about the Azedi arrival in the Dartius System, the two Federation ships warped into the system where we linked up with the two Romulan ships already in the system.

Once in the system, scans revealed that there was a shipyard that looked disused, as well as several orbital storage facilities. There were also several civilian habitats, but these were not marked as military targets. There were also no Azedi ships in the system, at this point. With the targets marked, we began our assault and destroyed all the military targets. It was then when we detected the opening of a wormhole and contact with two Azedi dreadnoughts and two destroyers were made.

Captain Nimitz gave the order for all ships to withdraw and warp to New Circini, as ordered. After a short exchange of fire, all allied ships managed to warp away.

However, as we approached the Azedi-Federation border, we detected a large isolytic burst and all ships immediately dropped out of warp, with warp and subspace communications down, ending up near a rapidly expanding subspace tear. The four Azedi vessels from our previous engagement were at the location, though they seemed to be observing the results. Captain Nimitz's quick thinking closed the subspace tear by beaming a shuttlecraft warp core into the tear, sealing it.

A renewed engagement with the Azedi ships began, with another isolytic torpedo causing a second subspace rift, and the RRW D'Ishae receiving a hit from a verteron beam weapon that ripped through her shields. As Captain Nimitz sealed the second subspace tear, the Azedi ships began to retreat. All ships continued to fire on the retreating ships, though we were not able to destroy any targets before they disappeared into their wormholes.

Following the restart of our warp drives and re-establishing subspace communications, the four ships continued to the New Circini System, where we rendezvoused with the fleet stationed there, though we were too late to participate in the battle that occurred there. The Task Force was then commanded to return to Deep Space Thirteen.

RECOMMENDATION: The mission was a success and much credit should be given to Captain Nimitz, whose planning and command in the Ikmore System, and his quick tactical thinking in halting the spread of the subspace rifts limited ship damage.

Our Romulan allies also deserve much credit; their assistance was invaluable, both in the completion of the mission and in the damage done to the Azedi vessels.

It remains to be seen if the mission was a success in the wider context. Repeated surgical strikes on Azedi territory should be repeated in order to achieve the maximum damage, though extensive recon should be done so as to minimise time wasted in the field analysing the situation, and ensuring a clean attack. It was also clear that Azedi facilities are rather sturdy; a special payload to damage these facilities should be developed to minimise the need for repeated attack runs.

A defence against this Isolytic weapon should be developed so ships don't lose warp capabilities at crucial times. All ships should also be advised of the subspace tear that accompanies these weapons and steps that can be taken to close them. Furthermore, though the Verteron beam can be dodged, it is clear that further research should be done to strengthen shield hardness against these weapons.

This officer wishes to express concern about the Azedi's seeming knowledge that the ships would be withdrawing to New Circini, and were able to head us off at the border. Whilst this could be down to careful deduction on behalf of the Azedi, to know exactly where we were to unleash the Isolytic weapon is concerning and could indicate subterfuge against us, or a development of ways to intercept communications without our knowledge.

This attack no doubt ends the period of non-aggression between us and the Azedi. Steps should be taken to deescalate this into peace talks, or, as is, unfortunately, the more likely case, escalate these into formal war declarations so that we can take firm steps for future engagements. To not do so would render this mission obsolete.

We didn't die and didn't commit any warcrimes? I say we do this event again.

LOCATION:Ikmore System, Itrin Sector, Alpha Quadrant

MISSION: Target specific Azedi military targets within system.

OUTCOME:
Targets destroyed, minor to moderate damage to Strike Force vessels.

KEY PERSONNEL:
NARRATIVE:
This Strike Force was tasked with destroying military targets at an Azedi shipyard in the Ikmore System. The R.R.W. Saeihr and R.R.W. D’Ishae were deployed prior to Federation ship arrival to scout the system under cloak. However, when we arrived the Azedi had already vacated the shipyard, leaving nothing more than minimal crew required to see to the station.

Upon arriving, the Federation ships began their attack run without much communication with their Republic allies. The R.R.W. Saeihr and R.R.W. D’Ishae scrambled fighters to assist with the bombing runs when we began to detect neutrino readings indicating the wormhole generators used by the Azedi. As Captain Nimitz gave the order to recall fighters and retreat from the system, two Azedi destroyers and two dreadnoughts arrived, opening fire on the Federation vessels. The R.R.W. D’Ishae provided cover fire, distracting the destroyers while the R.R.W. Saeihr was able to successfully prevent one of the destroyers from opening a wormhole within the R.R.W. D’Ishae. All ships were able to successfully warp out of the system.

The Azedi must have expected the Strike Force to warp directly to New Circini, as we detected an Isolytic burst, disrupting our warp engines and dropping us into normal space. The four Azedi ships from the Ikmore shipyard were waiting and had opened a large subspace tear near where our Strike Force had been dropped from warp. While the U.S.S. Pegasus and the U.S.S. Endeavour moved to seal the tear, the Republic ships provided covering fire, engaging the Azedi ships directly. The two dreadnoughts targeted the R.R.W. Saeihr and R.R.W. D’Ishae with Verteron weapons before retreating through wormholes once again. The U.S.S. Pegasus was successful in sealing the subspace tears, however not before both Federation vessels took heavy structural damage. Once basic repairs were completed on warp engines and subspace communications, the Strike Force regrouped and warped to New Circini to regroup with the rest of the Fleet. However, by the time we arrived, the battle was over and we were ordered to return to Deep Space 13 for repairs.

RECOMMENDATION:
While the Strike Force was able to complete the mission objectives assigned to us, I would still consider this mission a failure. Our weapons still prove to be largely ineffective against the Azedi and our survival appears to be due to more of a lack of engagement from the Azedi than any tactical or technological wonders from the Strike Force. We still have no reliable way to prevent wormhole generation, our shields barely reduce the effectiveness of their Verteron weapon systems, we must expect warp cores in attempt to ineffectively seal the subspace tears they can create, and they are able to quickly disable both warp and subspace communication functions through the use of Isolytic bursts. If a war with the Azedi is imminent, we must pour more time and resources into understanding and countering their weapon systems.

In addition, should we be expected to fight as allies in this conflict, the Republic ships should have access to and standardize all anti-Azedi weaponry currently employed by the Federation. While we do employ anti-infection measures on our comms, we do not have access to the limited technology used to collapse Azedi wormholes. It was more sheer luck the R.R.W. Saeihr was able to prevent the wormhole opening within the R.R.W. D’Ishae.

There were reports of missing crew members from the R.R.W. D’Ishae in the sections the wormholes were detected. As I suggested to Rear Admiral Konieczko during the debriefing, until these crew members are located it is possible the Azedi abducted them. They took officers during the attack on Deep Space 13 so it is well inside the realm of possibility they might attempt to do the same amidst the firefight and confusion. I would suggest all vessels assigned both to the Ikmore Strike Force and the New Circini Strike Force account for all crew members, alive or otherwise, to ensure no other crew members are missing.

LOCATION: New Circini System

MISSION: In response to intelligence of potential attack in the Dartius and/or New Circini system, deploy task force to New Circini and coordinate with local government for support and defense of Romulan and Federation assets in system.

OUTCOME: Several Starfleet and Romulan vessels damaged, unknown Azedi vessels damaged or destroyed. Civilian assets successfully defended but enemy forces motives and intent presently unclear. Wayfarer currently undergoing repairs around DS13, with an estimated 2 days before being combat capable again.

KEY PERSONNEL:
USS Leyte Gulf (Operational Lead)
USS Albion
USS Appomattox
USS Avalon
USS Brahe
USS Brindisi
USS Inexpugnable
USS Saraswati
USS Scharnhorst
USS Sunrise
USS Vanguard
USS Wayfarer

NARRATIVE: Having received intelligence that the Azedi Confederacy was planning an attack on, at first, the Dartius system, a task force was assembled in order to provide defense to thwart such advances. At approximately one hour prior to the departure for such defense, further intelligence was received that the target of the attack was actually the New Circini system. Acting on this information, the assembled task force, as listed above, departed DS13 for New Circini under the operational control of CAPT DePoe. There were other elements regarding this operation that this officer is not privy to; specifically actions in the Ikmore and Dartius systems. This report can only cover Wayfarer’s actions in New Circini and what was observed there.

As the task force (referred to as such throughout the rest of this report and containing only those ships listed above) drew close to the New Circini system, we began to receive indications of Azedi ships already in system ahead of us. Upon arrival, the task force drew up into a defensive posture, at Red Alert, and attempted to contact both the Azedi ships and New Circini government. It was apparent at this time that the Azedi ships were not engaged with any other assets in system; such was later confirmed by the New Circini leadership. As we received minimal response from the Azedi, the order came down to maintain our posture while CAPT DePoe attempted to deescalate the situation.

That situation abruptly changed, however, shortly thereafter. Multiple wormholes began to open all around the task force, completely surrounding the ships and effectively establishing a killzone. The command was given to break formation and maneuver independently, and the rules of engagement were summarily shifted based on the wormholes and other information received from Fleet Command. Immediately, Wayfarer began evasive maneuvering while attempting to target and neutralize wormholes. This officer’s intent was to support the main combat action of the rest of the task force by shutting down wormholes as they were appearing virtually everywhere around the task force. Wayfarer was successful in neutralizing one wormhole, and was maneuvering for a second attempt. This second attempt failed, and at about this point, the ship was struck by what was later determined to be some sort of limpet-styled verteron mine. Once detonated, this mine shut down Wayfarer’s warp field, which disrupted her ability to maneuver under impulse or her ability to warp out. Additionally, the shield powering grid was overloaded, and communications and the ship’s sensors systems were also affected. In short, the ship was totally disabled and rendered combat ineffective, despite the fact that it was otherwise still spaceworthy. At this point, this officer was no longer aware of whatever else was going on in the task force.

Initial efforts to determine what exactly happened to the ship were difficult to ascertain. However, it was determined that the ship had been disabled to the extent described above, at which time this officer ordered a shuttle launched to establish communications with CAPT DePoe and the rest of the task force. The theory that the shuttles aboard Wayfarer were unaffected because they were in a standby status proved to be true, and communications were reestablished. By this point, the Wayfarer had been towed into orbit around New Circini, and out of the combat area. By this point, the enemy ships were in withdrawal, as well, though some of the task force were still in direct fire engagement with them.

Eventually the firing stopped as the Azedi ships were either destroyed or successful in breaking contact. The task force then spent some time assessing the effects of everything that had transpired, and efforts were made to bring everyone back to DS13. Wayfarer was towed back by the Albion, where, once at the station, the ship’s crew began full efforts to assess the damages to the ship and begin affecting repairs.

RECOMMENDATION: It is the opinion of this officer that this entire scenario was planned out for the Azedi to test new weapons and delivery systems and to see the results of those weapons. In the initial opening assault, the wormholes were spread around the entire task force, and those wormholes were the means by which the mines were delivered into theater. Had the ships remained in that killzone, those mines would have easily disabled the entire task force within seconds, leaving the vulnerable to the enemy ships already in system to simply mop up after the fact. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the following ideas be considered:
  • Diplomatic relations have clearly soured to the point that we are again on a war footing with the Azedi. If it is still tenable, efforts should be made to return things to the cease-fire originally in place. If it is not an option, then the Fleet should be mobilized and prepared for extended combat operations. It should also be considered to include our Romulan and Klingon allies, as it is likely that given the abilities of the Azedi, we may need more ships on hand in order to defeat them soundly.
  • Resources should be made available to counter this new mine weapon system. It should be noted that the mines penetrated active shields at the time they attached themselves to the ships that were so targeted. The means by which they did this, and a means to counter that, should be the immediate goal of the Fleet sciences and engineering departments, as well as those of the ships of the Fleet until an answer is found.
  • Recommend commendations to CAPT DePoe for maintaining cohesion through the face of the chaos of battle. Further commendations, or at least this officer’s sincere thanks, to the Captains and Crew of Brindisi and Albion for pulling Wayfarer out of the fire and back home.
  • Lastly, commendations for the crewmen aboard Wayfarer who lost their lives in the attack: Crewman Second Class Eleanor DeClair and Crewman First Class Thahlav Th'rhaorrar.

OOC: A great time and a great event. Thank you Katriel and the rest of the Staff who put all this together! I've tried to keep this AAR strictly focused on the actions of Tarm and his ship, and tried to keep out all other factors where possible.

LOCATION: Dartius System

MISSION: Observe Azedi behavior in the Dartius system; report findings to Starfleet

OUTCOME: Azedi presence confirmed in Dartius system; local planet obliterated by orbital bombardment and orbital defenses left largely untouched

KEY PERSONNEL:
R.R.W. Impavadus, Commander Marrus Tal'aura

NARRATIVE: Upon request from Rear Admiral Konieczko, a single Romulan warbird, the R.R.W. Impavadus under the command of Commander Marrus Tal'aura, was dispatched to the Dartius system with strict orders to observe, from a cloaked state, Azedi behavior in the event they arrived in-system. The warbird was under orders to remain undetected, and not to engage Azedi combatants under any circumstances.

Shortly after the Azedi arrived in the Dartius system, R.R.W. Impavadus sends a transmission to Rear Admiral Konieczko detailing their arrival; four vessels of considerable size, including two dreadnought-sized. Azedi combatants begin their assault on the strategically placed decoy orbital facilities; attacks on these defenses are light, and are short lived. Shortly after, the Azedi turn their attention to the nearby planet, and begin focusing on orbital bombardment procedures.

Within moments of the bombardment beginning, Azedi vessels launch missile-like weaponry in the proximity of the planet, as well as the orbital defenses. Once detonated, subspace tears opened up in the target region, causing subspace communications, as well as warp capabilities, to be disabled for Impavadus. With minimal damage taken, and nothing to suggest that Azedi forces had detected the cloaked vessel, Impavadus continued its observation while quietly repairing the damaged facilities.

After the local planet was entirely obliterated by Azedi orbital bombardment, they continued to ignore orbital facilities as they made their departure from the Dartius system. However, two subspace tears remained in the area, and R.R.W. Impavadus was forced to travel to the system's edge at sublight speeds in order to re-establish subspace communications and warp capabilities. Communications with Rear Admiral Koniezcko, as well as the rest of his fleet, were regained, and Impavadus was cleared to leave the system after a short discussion regarding what had happened.

RECOMMENDATION: With the Azedi ignoring the orbital defenses, and instead moving directly to attack the local planet, it is this Commander's observation that the enemy combatants potentially saw through Starfleet's ruse. After but a few moments of attacking the orbital facilities, Azedi forces opted to ignore them. I recommend keeping this information in mind when moving forward with operations involving the Azedi.

Additionally, I recommend continued observation of Azedi operations, military or not, as well as continued observation of the subspace tears created by their ordnance.

OOC: First event I've ever been to, and first report I've ever written; if I missed anything, please let me know! Other than that, awesome event, thank you to everybody, especially to Dandin, who was extremely patient with me.

CONCLUSION:

All patients have been stabilized and I anticipate the return of our crewmates from the USS Sunrise by week's end, with the exception of LTJG Avery Rose; at the discretion of the CMO , USS Sunrise, he may be transferred to the DS13 medical facility for further treatment. I request another closed-atmosphere respiration unit to add to our current complement to ensure availability; the close quarters on the Brahe make it likely that a greater-than-average number of crew outside the initial fire area may be affected by smoke inhalation.
