Good Evening Captains,
In light of the most recent Azedi attack, in which your vessels were disabled, Deep Space 13 has dedicated substantial resources to Verteron-based Countermeasures. As your ships will doubtless begin patrols or other assignments over the coming weeks, DS13 invites you to transfer the Verteron Mines in your possession to the safety of the DS13 R&D Departments dedicated to this task.

We also invite you to participate in this research. The knowledge and insight your ships can provide is incalculable, as no doubt is the practical combat experience you've gained engaging with the Azedi.

Please coordinate your transfers and research with Lieutenant Commander Fozka. DS13 is grateful for your continued diligence and defense of our station and home.

SUBJ RE: Consolidation & Focus of Azedi Research Efforts
CMDR Austin,

Please find attached our current stockpile of information regarding New Circini and the mines we encountered there. Further, I will have LT Ivey and LCDR Ses coordinate with DS13 and LCDR Fozka, specifically, for the transfer of onboard materiel. LT Ivey will be accompanying our portion of the pie, as it were, as I will be detaching her from shipboard operations in order to assist, where needed, in the continuing research efforts of the station's science and engineering departments. She will likely disagree, but I feel that the ship will be able to suffer a few days or a week or two without Erin aboard. We will, of course, endeavor to make do without her expertise as Chief Science Officer. Please let me know if you have any concerns regarding this, or if there is anything else we can do to assist in the research of the Azedi capabilities and counters to the same.

LCDR Ses, LT Ivey,

Please assist where possible. Coordinate with DS 13 and LCDR Fozka in order to make sure everythign gets turned in in an orderly and timely fashion. LT Ivey, you will be detached from the ship for the time being. LCDR Fozka and/or CMDR Austin will your point of contact until you are given a specific department head or other senior officer to whom to report. And yes, I promise not to blow the ship up while you're away.

SUBJ Re: Consolidation & Focus of Azedi Research Efforts

Commander,

I've attached a consolidated data packet containing all of our sensor data and logs from the New Circini incident, reports on the examination of the device and its effect on our systems, etc. Please contact my XO and CSO, Commander T'Maal, to arrange for transfer of the device itself into your custody.

I should also inform you that we've had no success so far with our own efforts to develop countermeasures against this and similar devices. Shielding operating subspace field coils against verteron pulses of this intensity presents significant, possibly insurmountable technical problems, and taking them offline and/or rapidly powering them back up under combat conditions offers its own set of challenges. Nor have we been able to come up with a practical method of more rapidly purging and resetting a disabled warp drive under those same conditions. The best idea we've come up with is to keep the device(s) from latching on in the first place, perhaps by automatically polarizing some or all of the hull; however, the Azedi may simply switch to proximity detonation rather than contact.

One tactical issue identified during analysis of the engagement is that the current implementation of Teleraptor requires the active vessel to orient its primary or secondary deflector(s) toward the active wormhole(s) and approach to close range, greatly limiting both response time and ability to maneuver evasively. I suggest further investigation of any means of using Teleraptor at greater distances and/or with off-axis emitters.

Good Evening Lt. Commander Fozka,
Please find attached our preliminary scans along with a comprehensive damage assessment in the hopes you find them useful. My First Officer has particular interest and background with regards to these projects and the Azedi effort. Feel free to leverage her experience as needed. Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

The contents of our cargo hold will be sent over by tomorrow morning.

Best Regards,
Captain Zaliel Sel
