HOLODECKS AND HIROGEN
Rules for 3 or more players.

Link to the game board. Change to the mouse cursor to move pieces around the board.

Objective
You're being hunted by the Hirogen! Place obstacles and Hirogen in your opponent's way to slow their progress and remove the obstacles in your path as you race to be the first to move your pieces out of the holodeck and evade the Hirogen hunters.

Pieces
1 gameboard
6 hirogen
4 red blocks
6 black blocks
6 blue blocks
6 yellow blocks
6 brown blocks
6 vertical wall
6 horizontal wall

(For more than 4 players, add another gameboard. Add another two of each piece for each extra player)

Starting Set Up
Place 1 red block and 1 hirogen at a random location in each quadrant. Place 2 player pieces on any white square in each quadrant. For a longer game, add more player pieces. Each player is assigned a quadrant (1 through 4).

Game
Each player can make two moves per turn. On their turn, they can make any of the following moves.
  1. Move any of your player pieces one square in any direction (including diagonals)
  2. Move or remove an object in their quadrant
  3. Place or move an object in an opponent’s quadrant

Once both moves have been made, the turn ends. Resolve any effects, and then play moves around to the next quadrant.

A player can choose to do two of the same moves (for example, move two pieces one square, or move one piece two squares, or move an object in their quadrant and place an object in an opponent’s quadrant). Moving a block from one quadrant to another quadrant counts as two moves (one move for removing a block, another move for placing the block in another quadrant).

If a piece starts on a white square, it can move to any other white square without expending a move. Pieces cannot move into another quadrant. You cannot move an opponent's player piece.

Blocks cannot be placed on top of each other, with the exception of player and Hirogen pieces, which can be placed on top of all other blocks except black blocks. There is a limited supply of blocks. If all blocks have been depleted, you must remove a block from a quadrant to be able to place it elsewhere.

Each block has certain effects, which are listed below. These include rules on moving, removing, or adding the block, as well as any special effects. Blocks cannot be placed on any white or green squares.

Block Effects

  • Red Block: Cannot be removed, only moved one square adjacent. It can be moved diagonally. If moved onto a player piece, the piece is moved to the start.

  • Black Block: Can be placed and removed, but cannot be moved after placement. The square you place it on cannot already be occupied by any other piece. No piece can move onto this square.

  • Blue Block: Can be placed and removed. Can be moved to up to 3 adjacent squares, but it cannot be moved diagonally. It can be placed on a player piece. Any player piece on a blue square cannot be moved until this block has been removed. If this block is moved to an adjacent square(s), any playing pieces on this block must also move with this block. This block cannot move through other blocks. Any player piece on this block has a penalty on Hirogen attacks (see Hirogen).

  • Yellow Block Can be placed, moved and removed. Can be placed on a piece. Any piece on this block cannot move for one turn. If there is more than one yellow block in a quadrant, at the end of every turn, flip a coin. If the coin shows heads, any pieces on a yellow block can teleport to a yellow block that is closer to the green square in your quadrant. If the coin shows tails, move any pieces on a yellow block to the yellow block the furthest away from the green square.

If more than one piece is on a yellow square at the end of your turn and you roll heads, move the piece on a yellow block the furthest away from the green square to the yellow block the closest to the green square. If you roll tails, move the piece that is a yellow block the closest to the green square to the yellow block the furthest away from the green square. If all the yellow blocks have pieces on them, and there are no free yellow squares, no pieces can be moved.

  • Brown block: Can be placed and removed. The block cannot be moved after placement. The block cannot be placed on a playing piece. Two moves are required to move a piece onto and out of the block.; thus, you can only move a piece onto or out of this block on the first move of your turn, and your turn automatically ends. A player piece on this block automatically dodges all Hirogen attacks.

  • Hirogen: Can be placed, moved and removed. If a piece is in any square adjacent to it (excluding diagonals), at the end of each turn, flip a coin. If heads, your piece must move back to the start (any of the white squares). If tails, the piece dodges the Hirogen attack. If the piece is on a blue square, flip a coin three times. If any of the throws show heads, the piece must move back to the beginning. The Hirogen ignores any piece on a brown square. Hirogen cannot shoot through walls.

  • Walls: Can be placed and removed, but cannot be moved once placed. Pieces and blocks cannot move past walls. Hirogen cannot attack through walls.

Winning
A player wins when all of their pieces have entered the green square.

OOC: Link to the game board is at the top of the document. Let me know if there are any errors (link broken, rule error, etc). Zaliel kindly helped to test the whiteboard app so it shouldn't require any sign-ups or log-ins to play. Two player and event rules coming soon!
