The petition, seen by the incumbent Praetor Sela's administration as treasonous, is used as an excuse to arrest Nathes for treason against the Star Empire. Refusing to submit to the order of arrest, Nathes and her crew go AWOL.

BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS
In stark contrast to many ranking officers in the Romulan Military, Nathes was not born on Romulus. Rather, she was born on the Romulan colony of Chaltok. Her family were modest Kheh farmers. Disease and famine on Chaltok drove Nathes to enlist in the Romulan Military.
A Romulan senator, recognizing the talents of Nathes, secured a place for her in the Imperial War College. Despite dealing with her peers prejudice for being a 'uncivilized colonial', Nathes proved herself in the tactical track. By the end of her four year tenure, she was assigned to the IRW Rhioy. The end of her tenure was also marked by the start of the Dominion War. Despite the risk of imprisonment, Nathes was outspoken in her desire to see the Romulan Star Empire join on the Federation's side.
During the Dominion War, Nathes served with distinction. Working alongside elements of the Federation's 11th Fleet, Nathes developed mutual respect for her Federation allies. She developed a number of friendships with various Federation aliens. When the war ended, she was reassigned to Romulan space.
The following decades proved trying for the Romulan State. Nathes was, fortunately, able to enjoy much of the decades' troubles. She did, however, publish a number of pamphlets highly critical of the Star Empire's leadership. When the Star Empire collapsed, Nathes was quick to defect to the Romulan Republic. She was promoted to Commander, and assigned to the Romulan frontier. Eventually, seeking a way out of this dangerous posting, she requested assignment alongside the Federation's 38th Fleet.
