Malhoon Raider's Trial (2396)
The Malhoon Raiders trial was a federation criminal trial based around the detained rebels responsible for the War of Emerald Lake controversy on Beta VI the year before. The trial lasted 27 days, and was held at the Federation Sector Courts on Starbase 24. All 27 defendants were found guilty of at least some of the charges brought against them. The Malhoon Raiders, who leader had died during the raid that had captured them, were at the time being led by Brenner Johans. While most defendants remained quiet and subdued during most of the trial, Brenner was vocally confrontational with the Judge, prosecutors, demonstrators and the media.
The trial sparked controversy on both sides of the court room for various reasons. The majority of defendants were largely viewed as followers of their dead colonial leader, Rey Malhoon and not instigators of open rebellion. Some activist groups even considered them to comparable to prisoners of war during a civil war. On the other hand, open violent revolt was not common in Federation space and though all were convicted some groups, especially Andorian lead organizations, felt the punishments were too lenient. the Chief Federation Judge in the case, Balin Kossif, a male Betazoid with considerable experience in delicate legal matters struck the best balance between the opposing viewpoints. All 27 defendants were sentenced to no less than 20 standard years at various penal colonies across Federation space, however Judge Kossif left open the ability to appeal after only five years served. Nearly all of the defendants were released within seven years. As of 2413, the only defended who still remain incarcerated was the Malhoon Raiders second in command, Brenner Johans. His specific place of detention is unknown.
