The USS October (NCC-90197-A) is a Federation Odyssey-class starship operated by Starfleet.

History

Launched in late 2407 from the San Francisco Fleet Yards, the U.S.S. Staffordshire (NX-97013) was one of several experiments on the Block 1A lineup of Odyssey class vessels. Like the majority of her early sister ships launched from the San Francisco Fleet Yards built upon space-frames from the 2380’s, the ship served as a test bed for the additional construct of the Aquarius auxiliary vessel located in the aft of the ship replacing the secondary shuttle bay.

After 2 years of experimental service, and after severe shipyard delays concerning the tension with the Klingons, the ship received its commission in 2409 following the decommissioning of the Galaxy class vessel, U.S.S. October (NX-90197). Due to the distinction the U.S.S. October obtained through service of the Klingon war, the U.S.S. Staffordshire was rechristened as the U.S.S. October (NCC-90197-A) prior to its assignment as replacement with the then Task Force Argo.

Trial by Fire on the Klingon Front

Decorated Captain, Coby Morton, took command of the vessel in mid-2411 resuming his service with Task Force Argo. The vessel began to create a reputation for itself within the sector, as at the time being only one of a few Odyssey class starships stationed permanently in Eta Eridani. As well as continuing it's predecessors patrol assignments along the Federation-Klingon borders, it maintained a position within the defense structure of Outpost Argo, an already heightened target in the sector.

Aside from standard conflicts and skirmishes within the Klingon war, one of the most notable battles the vessel was drafted into was the Battle for Starbase 381 "Praetorian". An onslaught by a Klingon armada brought about the intense battle for the starbase system, Argo vessels, including the U.S.S. October, were eventually given orders to withdraw after sustaining heavy damage. Once the allied vessels had withdrawn the 26th Fleet unleashed their untested use of a defunct Iconian Gateway located within Eta Eridani, this backfiring majorly and causing the unintentional relocation of the station to the area of space now known as the Outback.

The ship spent the next three months in dry-dock undergoing repairs to all of its major systems damaged during the conflict. Following a minor retrofit conducted during the repairs, the vessel resumed its responsibilities within the defense structure of Outpost Argo.

Out of the Ball Park

In 2413, the U.S.S. October saw a rotation with its command structure. Following Captain Coby Morton's reassignment as commanding officer of Outpost Argo to oversee its refit to Deep Space Thirteen, Commander Athini zh'Aeregon saw promotion to Captain, and became the vessels new commanding officer. This change in command brought about a likewise rotation of assignment, the ship was assigned to the efforts within the Solanae Sphere, combating the Voth hostilities.

After leading several Task Force strikes within the conflict, the vessel was then transferred back into the defense structure of Deep Space Thirteen as an unofficial station flagship. Later that year the U.S.S. October, under the operational command of Captain Coby Morton and with a crew mixture of DS-13 staff, was sent to carry out a survey of Sigma-593-b. During this, the vessel detected a group of anomalous readings, which later when followed up led to the discovery of an entire planetary system - initially named October 1-a, this system would later receive an official title and colony effort under "Pariah".

Attack of the Undine

Following repairs after the damage caused during the large scale Undine assault on Deep Space Thirteen in mid-2413, the U.S.S. October saw sudden reassignment in early 2414. With Captain Morton's temporary promotion to Fleet Captain, the vessel was reassigned outside of Task Force Argo to the Fourth Fleet, overseeing joint operations with both the KDF and RRF against the Iconian threat.

After receiving heavy damage in the defense of the Sol System, Captain Athini zh'Aeregon resumed her captaincy of the vessel and oversaw the proposed refit. With the advancement of the class since the October's launch and the heavy damage received, October was one of the next line of vessels to undergo refit following the U.S.S. Yorktown (NCC-98300). Due to the rather unconventional nature of such a new vessel to undergo a radical refit of this magnitude the vessel retained large portions of its original structure and internals, instead of a more complete restructure as seen with the even more severely damaged Yorktown.

Within the refit, the October received several upgrades to her impulse engine systems as well as the inclusion of two additional torpedo tubes ventral of the vessels chevron, however regardless of the emitters installment the new Yoyodyne class 960-B Unified Emitter Arrays were nonfunctional until mid 2417.

Return of the King

As the vessel was relaunched in mid-2415, Captain Athini zh'Aeregon transferred to Stafford-Spire station as its first commanding officer, a joint-operations facility operating as both a commercial and scientific hub within the Delta Quadrant. The U.S.S. October found its way back to Deep Space Thirteen now operating under the 38th Fleet.

With his ship, the U.S.S. Oswestry, being recalled to the Fleet Yards for complete overhaul, Captain Coby Morton requested permission to remain within the 38th Fleet and transferred his command of the Fleets Second Squadron with him to the recently refit vessel. After assignment rotation, the U.S.S. October was placed as squadron flag of the 38th Fleets Aries Squadron.

Following an extended exploratory assignment, the U.S.S. October was then onceagain assigned to the 38th Fleet, however operating from Deep Space K-7 following the evacuation and near destruction of Deep Space 13. During a series of repairs to the primary hull following an engagement with Fre’li pirates, the U.S.S. October received a minor refit to the deflector dish. The vessel took part in several repair efforts to restore Deep Space Thirteen, notably completing repairs and installation of the stations fuel pods and reservoir.

The Obvious Child

In early 2418, the October was assigned to a 1-Year deep space exploratory assignment, however due to ongoing malfunctions within the vessel, the assignment has been placed on hold on several occasions. In mid-2419 the October returned to Deep Space - 13 to undergo critical repairs to the warp infrastructure and resumed assignment in early 2420.

Bite’s Worse Than It’s Bark

In late 2420 the October was put into dry dock to undergo non-extensive refit brought forward from tensions within the Klingon Empire. Using pre fabricated structures, utilising blueprints of the Lexington/Yorktown subclass, the vessel received hull plating improvements as well as an additional mission pod, housing additional torpedo tubes and mission-based crisis suites. Another addition of the refit was a high-yield phaser suite that was installed in the form of a ventral “Lance”, as of mid 2421 this device is still non-operational and pending complete installment when proven necessary.

During the Terran gambit invasion, the U.S.S. October was part of the Gemini Task Force of the 38th Fleet's response force, taking a primarily defensive nature of worlds put under Terran threat as well as forming offensive strategies against already besieged planets with her distant-sister ship the U.S.S. Endeavour. Notably, the vessel took part in the defence of Zelva, the attack of Citali and the offensive at Azed. Following the cease of hostilities, Captain Morton and the U.S.S. October were assigned to diplomatic duties, re-establishing relations with those affected by Terran occupation including the Azedi taking the vessel into 2422.

With the looming threat of The Other advancing through Federation territory the U.S.S. October was pulled into the 38th Fleet's Operation Roadblock within Task Force One. After the U.S.S. Atlantis carrying Vice Admiral Aluk was considered destroyed October took operational command albeit very briefly as Captain Morton ordered remaining vessels to retreat to Jupiter from the offensive. As the October remained in system, the vessel was considered destroyed as with remaining task force elements; a memorial was held aboard Deep Space-13 for all those lost.

Several days later the October, as well as the majority of affected vessels, had in-fact been digitised and were released following a cease in hostilities. Computer logs and crew were none the wiser aware of the days lost, and following debriefing, soon the October was reinstated onto the active roster.

We're the Sultans of Tri'Vokil

In mid-2422 the U.S.S. October was stationed within the Tri'Vokil system, initially one of three 38th Fleet elements, during the Romulan Star Empire offensive on the independent Romulan colony world. Commander Kara Blake came aboard assigned as the vessel's new Executive Officer alongside Commander Ruke Warner, taking over from Lieutenant Commander Henry Presland as Chief Tactical Officer. Following an all out offensive and the destruction of the Star Empire's heavy weapon's platform Captain Morton requested the formation of a Task Force contingent, headed by the U.S.S. October, to be stationed permanently within the system to ensure suitable defence for an inevitable second major attack.

In early 2423, Captain Morton was reassigned to the 38th Fleet Admiralty Office as an adjutant, transferring command of the vessel to Commander Kara Blake, pending a permanent Captain assignment. After several weeks, U.S.S. October was transferred once again out of the 38th Fleet to the 4th Fleet, ending her second longstanding tenure to 'Argo', and received new command staffing and assignment following Commander Kara Blake's request transfer to the 38th Fleet's JAG office. Commander Ruke Warner was reassigned as Executive Officer of the U.S.S. Mariner - A.

Auxiliary and Crew Support Measures

Designed as a vessel of exploration, the Odyssey class line of ships on standard measures feature a rather impressive compliment of auxiliary vessels. The U.S.S. October is no exception to this norm, and following it's complete refit in 2414 featured a rotational update to it's auxiliary craft manifesto. The direct cease in hostilities brought about the subtraction of all fighter-type shuttle craft from the vessels compliment, instead replenishing and bolstering the vessel's standard Type 10 shuttle pod, Type 11 shuttle craft and cargo management vehicle with increased numbers. The more standardized use of general-purpose auxiliary craft meant officers commanding these vessels naturally had equal opportunity to gain flight capable skills without the direct need of a specialty craft tailored to a more direct task.

The Type 10 shuttle pods see regular use during maintenance observation, shuttle-transfer between vessels, and interplanetary survey assignment. While not able to remain fully autonomous for prolonged duration, the latest retrofit Type 10 shuttle pods feature adequate replicator rations to provide mild comforts for crew on extended operations. At any one time, there are three Type 10 shuttle pods stored on the hanger deck within the main shuttlebay, with three stored in reserve. These shuttles are available to all crew members upon request to the U.S.S. October's Operations department and Starship Command.

The Type 11 shuttle craft is the U.S.S. October's go-to work horse for any general purpose assignment. While these vessels encompass the assignments generally relegated to the Type 10, the Type 11 is often used when escorting a larger away team compliment to site, or for transport between long-distance destinations. At any one time, there are four Type 11 shuttle pods stored on the hangar deck within the main shuttlebay, with four stored in reserve. These shuttles are available to most crew members upon request to Starship Command and Operations - should it be deemed necessary, on occasion use will be limited to that of the Type 10 variety.

Originally hosting a pair, since the U.S.S. October's refit the vessel now only hosts one Argo-type light cargo transport within it's ranks. The Argo, under the moniker Springer is a somewhat larger shuttle craft than the common Type-11 and with it's modularity can be equipped for almost any assignment. It's larger cargo space, often occupied by a three-man four wheeled buggy-automobile, can also accommodate a significantly sized landing party when the situation calls for it. During normal operations, the Springer is usually stored below the main hangar deck and kept in reserve until operations require it. The Springer is often only available during specific-assignment, under orders from Starship Command and Operations.

The self-sustaining design of the Odyssey class called for an increased number of personal Worker Bee shuttle pods to help facilitate any possible repairs or maintenance when deployed considerable distance from a Federation port. The entirety of the U.S.S. October's Worker Bee compliment is kept in reserve. These shuttles are usually only available to select engineering teams when authorized by the Captain of Engineering and Starship Operations.

The U.S.S. October houses two Yellowstone Runabouts within it's hangar at all times. The Runabouts are used for a variety of assignments, however their primary use is scientific survey. They have been used to ferry senior staff, or large compliment away teams to destinations, however with the open-availability of the Type 11, these tasked are often reassigned. Runabouts are moderately armed, and can operate autonomously from the U.S.S. October for considerable duration before requiring resupply. They feature replicators, sleep quarters and can be configured with their modular nature to transport large quantities of cargo. Runabouts are available for command by senior staff upon request to Starship Operations, or general crew upon direct request and order from Starship Command.

Built into the ventral portion of the U.S.S. October's chevron section, the Captain's Yacht can operate almost similarly to a Runabout. Designed to represent the sleeker lines of the mothership's class, the Captain's Yacht is often reserved for official use only, diplomatic departures and planetary landing are large uses of the vessel however due to it's size it boasts a rather impressive set of defensive systems. The shuttle is always stored, docked, ventral to the mothership's chevron section. It is only available upon delegation from the vessel Commanding Officer.

During her major refit following The Battle of Midnight the October had a series of Yoyodyne 960-B Unified Field Emitter arrays installed. These were non-functional until mid 2417 when Captain of Engineering Thys th’Allegro cowboy-tuned the then-innate emitters to disable a Breen vessel as these arrays can harness an incredibly wide range of exotic particles and energies. Once tuned correctly these emitters are capable of projecting a mass energy wave that can be utilised to interfere with isolinear processors on a subatomic level, with proven potential to completely disable hostile vessels within the wave’s wake.

Following the October’s refit in late 2420 a numbed-variant of the JYNZ Systems Tactical Computer was installed within the vessel's new mission pod, built to run within the October’s EPS conduit grid which was somewhat lesser than those present aboard Endeavour class starships, which serves as both a targeting aid and provides significant assistance in squadron and fleet coordination management. This computer system also ties in directly with the additional multi-vector torpedo tubes installed on all faces of the mission pod, capable of launching a multi-directional artillery barrage at multiple combatants.

As part of its offensive refit brought about with once again rising tensions across the Klingon border, the October had a ventral spinal phaser lance installed. Built directly into the entire structure, or “spine”, of the vessel's hull this powerful armament fires a large phaser beam within the vessel's forward arc. Based on technology used on the Galaxy “X” refit this weapon is devastating against unshielded targets and is even capable of piercing multiple enemy starships within the same firing line. Due to its heavy wattage, the weapon is generally to be used as a final crushing blow, or should the starship be within a squadron, as an initial destructive strike. With this however comes a massive strain on the utilising starship’s energy transfer conduits and takes considerable power from main systems temporarily, which can leave the ship vulnerable. The October’s spinal lance phaser was non-operational until late 2421.

The October is a massive, slow tank. She’s got all the curves in all the right places, and needs to be treated appropriately. She has thick armour, powerful weaponry and highly-tuned sensors; but she doesn’t quite have plot physics. Regardless of the size or class of her opponent, the right shot in the right place can easily cripple her. She’s still going to take a beating even if she comes out on top.

Launched in late 2407 under a different name the October started life as an Odyssey class star cruiser, Block 1A, with innate abilities such as chevron(saucer) separation common throughout Starfleet vessels. Unique to the class, she features the built-in Aquarius class parasite escort, registered as the U.S.S. Shrewsbury. This small escort can operate autonomously from the mothership and be used for planetary landing should the need arise. As well as this, the vessel carries a considerably heavy shuttle compliment to facilitate away missions, colony transfer and scientific study. Unlike her predecessor, she houses no specific-built fighter craft.

The vessel, while originally quite reasonably armed to begin with, received an early refit following the cease fire at the end of the Iconian war. The vessel took on numerous upgrades to both defensive systems and its scientific facilities alike and is exceptionally capable of sustaining herself on extended assignment. While not an exact match on the likes of the tactical-system based Endeavour Subclass, the October is no stranger to putting up her fists. Since her latest refit, she’s received the addition of a high-spec mission pod, complete with upgrade targeting sensors and additional torpedo tubes.

The October is notorious for getting bad rolls during fleet wide events, therefore it’s become tradition to state her sensor systems are the worst- feel free to play on that should you ever roll on behalf of the ship.

If we treat her like a lady, she’ll always bring us home.

The USS Shrewsbury II (NCC-90197-A) was a Federation Aquarius-class starship operated by Starfleet.

History

Launched in mid-2415 the U.S.S. Shrewsbury (II) was immediately assigned to the newly refit U.S.S. October, coinciding with the larger vessel's own relaunch, replacing the destroyed Aquarius Class U.S.S. Shrewsbury lost during the Battle at Midnight. The Shrewsbury followed the line of updates to the Aquarius class, receiving minor updates to onboard sensor suites as well as a limited number of improved armaments (namely updated phaser arrays more in-line with current fleet wide standards).

Naming the vessel was ceremoniously put to a vote by the Starfleet Engineering Corps as a token of lives lost aboard the original vessel with its destruction, with over 79% of the current U.S.S. October's crew compliment approving a second Shrewsbury.

The vessel received a rather small, inconspicuous christening tied in within victory/memorial proceedings, which then led to its immediate active assignment. Captain zh'Aeregon was initially tasked with a shakedown cruise, however due to delays with the already overburdened shipyards this task was passed forward into active assignment notes thanks to the calming in hostilities across the starmap.

In mid 2422 the Shrewsbury was assigned along with her mothership to Tri’Vokil space following engagement with Romulan Star Empire forces. Notably the Shrewsbury, crewed by Executive Officer Commander Kara Blake and Chief Tactical Officer Ruke Warner, entered the suspected Star Empire staging grounds within the Valdore Nebula. While her stay was short, the vessel was able to intercept an encrypted communication transmitted to Rator III, along with the detection of a large hostile fleet operating around an ancient starbase facility- leading to the formation of a Starfleet 38th Fleet's taskforce in defense of the Tri'Vokil system.

Following Captain Coby Morton's reassignment to the 38th Fleet's adjutant officer, command of the October and by default the Shrewsbury was transferred to Commander Kara Blake pending the assignment of a new permanent Commanding Officer.

Auxiliary and Crew Support Measures

Alterations to the exterior of the vessel were planned, however changes were soon dropped in favour of a complete standard rebuild with completion of the U.S.S. October's refit nearing conclusion. The vessel has no permanent senior staff assigned to it. In the event of an emergency or Red Alert situation, select Bridge Officers (either on duty or not) are selected to take operational Command with an appropriate selection of tactical and engineering crewmen at any given notice; this is assisted by the small short range transporter system connected between both the main-bridge of the U.S.S. October and the escort's three-man transporter system. Additionally however, during direct assignment issued from the Starship Commanding Officer, crewmen from the U.S.S. October may be transferred to the vessel on a temporary basis until completion of said assignment.

The vessel has moderate sleeping quarters, suitable for housing up to 40 officers and enlisted alike, with senior officers receiving two dedicated quarters to share.

While lightly armoured, the vessel does boast an impressively powerful compliment of weaponry in the form of it’s primary Quad-Cannons. Featuring several variable-load torpedo tubes that can easily be modified to take class 1, 2 and 3 probes should the situation call for it. Scientific facilities aboard the vessel are on par with those found on smaller, escort type vessels. Sensors have a maximum distance of around 15 Light Years. The U.S.S. Shrewsbury is designed to operate fully independently from it’s mothership, having facilities such as a small mess hall along with a small gymnasium aboard for crew recreation. The U.S.S. Shrewsbury hosts a single Type-10 shuttle pod for auxiliary usage.

The U.S.S. Shrewsbury is often reserved for specific assignment or emergency situations. Concerning the former, requests can be made to the Starship Commanding Officer on a case-by-case basis until a request is considered appropriate. In most instances, shuttles are considered a natural alternative.
