Galikans - Genetically mutated species

In 2328 scientist conducting gene sequencing and splicing oat the Zeta Reticuli Orbital Research Facility were able to successfully fuse the genetic code of an Andorian makra with the now extinct terran highland gorilla. The method of sequence was thus used to transfer the genetic material of several extinct or endangered species into animals for other worlds, in an attempt to preserve the genetic diversity. As the procedure became common, and simpler to conduct, several non-Federation planets started using it to develop specially tailored genetic mutations for various tasks. In 2359 one of these species was a semi-sentient bipedal animal was developed for heavy labor and even as an attack animal by Orion pirates. Referred to as "Galikans" all of the source material is unknown but Starfleet medical examinations of deceased individuals indicate that they do contain genetic material from Andorian makras, the Cardassian Gettle, and the Bajor krutu. It is likely that they also contain the genetic material of some sentients, an act that is illegal by Federation regulations.

Found on Orion pirates and sometimes boarding parties, Galikans are trained to be loyal to an individual handler and generally obey the commands of that handler. Standing over 8 feet tall with incredible strength a Galikan can inflict incredible damage on individuals with either sticks, clubs or sometimes edged weapons. They are incapable of using projectile or energy weapons, however. A thick red scaly hide protects them for attacks to include all but sustained energy bursts. Of note, disruptor weapons have proven to do the most damage to the animals leading to a quicker incapacitation.

Galikans are not considered a sentient species and cannot communicate with words or sentence structure. They generally grunt or growl to communicate simple needs, similar to the terran Canis lupus familiars, or common dog. However, they do understand basic commands from their handlers. Handlers of Galikans claim that the animals are smarter than science understands and that looking into the small eyes of a Galikan can lead you to understand its soul. Obviously such illogical claims are impossible to verify.

Galikans are only mutate-able as a male specimen and thus are genetically sterile and cannot mate to reproduce. To grow one, the genetic material must be sequenced and then impregnated into a carrying host. The most common host is the Andorian Makra, though the animal dies during the Galikan's gestation. Their lifespan can be as much as 30 years, of which the first two years they are considered immature for use. Several Galikan dealers can be found along the fringes of Orion space.

Starfleet recommends that in the case of a tactical engagement with forces using a Galikan, focus attacks on rendering the handler incapable of giving commands before focusing attacks on the animal itself.

(( I smell foreshadowing... ))
((Perhaps... It also is a bit of postshadowing if there is such a thing. For Kat who I (twice) led down the Gatikan path with no info what-so-ever.))
