BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS

Spoiler: Beylara Ailes Biographical InformationShow
Beylara Ailes was born Stardate 62517 on Rixx, Betazed to Kevit and Trialla Ailes. Kevit Ailes serves as the Secretarial Advisor to the Minister of House, Communities, and Local Government in Rixx, a title far more imposing than the minor administrative functionary actually is. His wife, Trialla, teaches basic control and interpretation to newly developing telepaths. Beylara is an only child, born three years into Kevit and Trialla’s marriage.

Beylara’s youngest years entailed toddling alongside a mother whose work in the classroom affected hundreds of young telepaths. She had a countless supply of older brothers and sisters that were willing to overlook the presence of the quiet, young child. Some of whom -- because of personal difficulties -- spent time at the Ailes’ home during their development. The classroom atmosphere, however, was typical of the adult environment of Betazed -- telepathic communication in use over verbal, particularly to practice for the students’ benefit -- the result of which left Beylara a very solemn, silent youth. It was an unexpected side effect of her voiceless environs. Her father’s work kept him often from home, with long hours at capitol in service to the government of Betazed.

Also being a very serious child, Beylara took after her father in that she applied herself with tremendous effort to live up to the expectations of her parents. Her scholastic performance was commendable. From her teenage years, she demonstrated an interest and ability with biological studies. Encouraged by her teachers, she explored much of the galaxy’s life in micro- and macroscopic detail, although it is unsurprising that the school’s first focus was life on Betazed.

This growing passion led her to apply to Starfleet Academy at the age of eighteen. Having completed her initial course of study on Betazed, she came prepared for a difficult and intensive program in the sciences. While she had studied enough to make it through the entrance exams, she wasn’t as skilled at the tactical and engineering portions of the Academy’s academic requirements. Beylara’s hours were spent in study, even when her various roommates throughout the years encouraged her to socialize.

Her notoriety as a ‘bookworm’ increased while she attended the Academy. Beylara was often sought out for tutoring assistance, particularly in subjects affiliated with biology. Being the kind person she was by nature, she often assisted students struggling. It wasn’t long before she had established her strengths and knew she was going to focus her studies on exobiology.

In addition, however, she had acquired a habit of being a peacemaker between the other students. This accompanied an insatiable curiosity for other cultures and their viewpoints on what was appropriate behavior -- particularly those with telepathy, or regular exposure to telepaths. This led her to acquire a secondary distinction in alien ethics and protocols. While no means specializing in diplomacy, it was a skill she enjoyed honing and perfecting, often to her fellows’ benefit. To this day, when exposed to a new culture (especially a telepathic one), Beylara will politely attempt to indulge her curiosity and ask many questions about the way that society works.

Her career, in general, had many elements that were unremarkable. After graduation, her first assignment wasn’t to a ship at all, but to Science Station 402, in the Kohlan system. There, she was an Ensign Research Assistant. The research that took place there offered a variety of experience for the new Ensign: Astrometry, Plasma Astrophysics, Molecular and Microbiology -- examining the universe from its greatest to its smallest aspects. Of course, not all at once. But the small samplings of different projects she was able to serve on the fringes of only increased her thirst for knowledge. Her service was acknowledged as suitable for promotion to Lieutenant, Junior Grade.

Her first shipboard assignment came after, the U.S.S. Gale, a Nova-class science vessel. Here, Beylara was one junior science officer amongst many. Life aboard a science vessel suited her well: the running experiments, the exploratory missions, the valuable resources -- all factors that combined to create an environment that appealed to the research-driven officer. She distinguished herself, working harder than most, applying herself to her duties with an intensity and focus unusual for such a young officer. A year after she transferred to the Gale, she was promoted to Lieutenant.

The following year marked a distinct change in her career. She transferred from the Gale, a science vessel, to the U.S.S. Loch Wee, a Defiant-class ship. There she was the Senior Science Officer and it was her first senior officer position. The Loch Wee was a hardy little ship, surviving engagements against the Borg, though not without scars. Beylara herself was relatively unscathed during the Borg Incursion of 2411. Ship-to-ship combat was all she ever faced.

While service on the U.S.S. Loch Wee was not the sort of experience that she enjoyed, the taste of authority changed her ultimate goals. She had grown close to her shipmates during the war with the Borg, and it was with trepidation that she left them to attend Advanced Command Officer Training. Pure science wasn’t enough for Beylara anymore. Ultimately, she wanted to command a vessel like the U.S.S. Gale, exploring and experimenting, sitting in the Captain’s chair.

After she returned from the advanced training course, Beylara continued to serve on the Loch Wee and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander. Shortly thereafter, she transferred to the U.S.S. Derecho, another Nova-class.

There, she was privileged enough to be granted a position as Second Officer -- her first real command role. Overseeing the experimentation aboard the Derecho gave her experience at balancing science pursuits and command, professionally. The other, additional, duties of a Second Officer aboard a Federation starship helped prepare her for future assignments. The Derecho was involved in the Iconian War and once more, Beylara was exposed to ship-to-ship combat; albeit this time in a more direct role.

It was as a newly-minted Commander that she moved on to her next assignment, the U.S.S. Vigilant, an Odyssey-class starship. It was the largest ship she’d served on to date and her position as First Officer was an intimidating one, at first. It was an excellent opportunity for a rising officer.

Beylara’s tenure on the Vigilant was short, as it was recalled to Earth only months after she was assigned to it, to be replaced by the U.S.S. Dryzaak. This Jupiter-class vessel was an imposing piece of engineering, and would present a challenge to any command staff. Moreover, it wasn’t long after that when her Commanding Officer was sent away on a mission -- and has not been heard from since. That left her in charge of the massive ship. That state of affairs lasted only so long as it took to find an appropriate solution. Commander Ailes, and a number of her crewmates, were transferred to the U.S.S. William Ockham, an Intrepid-class.

Approximately one year after her taking command of the U.S.S. William Ockham, Commander Ailes was promoted to Captain in a small ceremony.

Near the end of 2417 (early November), the U.S.S. William Ockham was severely damaged in defending against an attack on Deep Space 13. Captain Ailes was lost during the evacuation and considered Missing In Action for a period of time, before searches were unsuccessful and she was declared Killed In Action. Some time later, the Confederacy of Azed returned their Starfleet Prisoners of War, including Beylara and the body of the one member who did not make it back alive.

As of August 1, 2418, Beylara Ailes took command of Deep Space 13.

PURPOSE AND CONTEXT OF EVALUATION

Basic Profile Assessment.

CONCLUSION

Authority finds subject to be of sound mental health and fit for active duty.

DISCUSSION

Authority notes that she has had several extended interactions with the subject prior to this interview and has always been impressed by the subject's gracious demeanor and uniformly considerate attitude that is widely above reproach. Subject consistently strikes the balance between polite reservedness and amiable outspokenness; she is honestly expressive while remaining tactful and is personable without seeming presumptuous. Authority therefore finds it completely unsurprising that she manages to strike a positive rapport with seemingly everyone with whom she interacts.

Subject's amiable composure is likely borne of a genuine interest in other people and their welfare. She is driven, despite the practical impossibility, to know and connect more personally all of the individuals in her working environment in order to better accomodate their needs and to achieve a more unified feeling amongst her crew. Subject favors a personal touch and is capable of 'outside the box' thinking when looking for command solutions, when all the standard ones have been exhausted. She trends towards optimistic outlooks on those around her and her circumstances, though remains grounded in reality-driven neutrality, and retains a quiet self-confidence and a solid emotional support network.
