BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Cyndriel is a lush green and blue world, known to many as "Beta Zed" (actually the name given to its primary star by a human astronomer) and "the jewel of the outer crown", and its people for being friendly, open, honest, and (not coincidentally) telepaths. The Dominion, however, saw it as a strategic objective - a beach-head from which to strike at the core worlds of the Federation - while certain of their Cardassian "allies" saw an opportunity to study and perhaps copy the natives' psionic abilities. Millions died in the initial conquest of the planet, the occupation (during which a Nor-class station was built in orbit with slave labor, and used for horrific experiments as well as spawning new Jem'Hadar soldiers), and the eventual liberation, months later. For a people who had never known war outside of ancient legends of a spiritual conflict against "demons", it was a terrible shock... one that continued to reverberate through their collective psyche for decades to come.

It took fifteen years before Eshka's parents, both of whom had lost loved ones to the war, were ready to bring another child into this world; by then her surviving half-brother was almost an adult himself, and she grew up, effectively, an only child. She was doted on and well-loved by her family, including her grandfather, who she considered the wisest person she knew. He was the only one willing to answer her questions about the war, though in guarded terms and with certain omissions; her parents preferred to deflect and change the subject to happier things.

Though they knew well how serious, responsible, and sometimes stubborn she could be, Eshka still managed to surprise her brother, and then her parents, by announcing her intention to join Starfleet - in 2408, with the Klingon War in full swing. Of course they tried to talk her out of it, fearing for her safety, but she argued that it was her desire and her duty to be part of "the shield", to stand between her world (and the rest of the Federation) and those who might do harm. Her grandfather supported her, though even he was reluctant to share with her his personal experience of having taken a life, a Jem'Hadar; when she finally forced him to it, the memory left her shaken, but still resolute.

Eventually her family accepted her decision - her father was the last to come around, and only to acknowledging that he couldn't stop her - and her application to the Academy was approved in time for her to be part of the freshman class of 2409. By the time she graduated, four years later, the swift pace of events had already changed the very nature of the conflict. The war she signed up to fight in and protect her home from was resolved, with new threats (on an even wider scale) arising to take its place. During the Undine attack on Earth, she was mobilized for guard duty, and then for cleanup and disaster relief; afterward, she was assigned to the starship Gettysburg, patrolling the edges of Federation space... and thus, ironically, missing the worst of the Iconian War the following year. Now, with this part of the galaxy at peace once again, she has requested and received a transfer to another post closer to home.
