Ship Readiness Inspections are an optional part of the post-recruitment process and are generally handled by Fleet Command or DS13 Engineering. It acts as a prompt and opportunity for starship-focused interaction, for those who want to expound more on their ship’s capabilities and highlights (or flaws!).

A written evaluation (on our part, not yours!) is usually the result of these interviews and gives you the chance to publicize your ship’s highlights (or flaws), and see if it’s being perceived the way you want it to. They usually take about 1 to 1.5 hrs and are by appointment only. To have one scheduled, contact the Fleet XO or Deep Space 13’s Chief Engineer or another engineer of your choice.

PURPOSE AND CONTEXT OF INSPECTION

Ship inspections tend to fall in one of two categories.

General Readiness Inspection: A basic inspection to verify the operational status and capabilities of a vessel and its crew. These are generally routine evaluations which may be performed upon a vessel’s transfer into a new fleet or squadron, at the request of a command authority, or at random intervals. These inspections are performed by a command authority.

Technical Inspection: A detailed and thorough inspection of a starship’s systems and components by an engineering authority. These inspections may be routinely scheduled as part of a vessel’s maintenance cycle, or requested by a command authority in response to a suspected technical issue. Technical inspection results are often directly utilized by command authorities to assist in decisions regarding the vessel’s future.

COMMANDING OFFICER: CAPT Holmes, A. E.
INSPECTION STARDATE: 96994.5

CONCLUSION

Captain Holmes maintains a high level of order and process aboard the U.S.S. Dallas, the senior staff are competent and carry their duties to a high standard in line with Starfleet ideals.

The Dallas herself is kept up to date, and in line with the latest equipment upgrades applicable for the Excelsior-class of this age. It is the opinion of this inspector that the adage of “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” most certainly applies here and the result is a finely managed vessel that is expected to serve Starfleet well over the remainder of her hull life.

REMARKS

Hull is kept in high order of maintenance, with within acceptable levels of baryon accumulation within the hull. Minor fading has occurred on the port side airlock label, however the notice is still legible. Chief Engineer Brex will replace the notice in the coming repair cycle.

There is a minor issue where the backup shield generator takes an abnormal amount of time to raise after the primary has failed under simulated conditions. Power distribution is not at fault nor does the software appear to be in error. Instead, the error appears to be a matter of simple physics where due to the increased density of the primary shield, the backup generator must wait for graviton flux distortions to return to normal levels before engaging.

This may be solved by installing a higher rated generator in the secondary array, or decreasing the power of the primary array (however this would also decrease the effectiveness). As the secondary array is otherwise fully functional I am content to pass this portion of the inspection with a warning, however it is advised to be addressed as soon as permissible.

The events of last year weigh heavy in the minds of the crew of Dallas. Both the evacuation of Deep Space 13 and an emergency shutdown of the Warp Core following a propulsion test. As a result, the crew of the Dallas maintain a rigorous emergency procedure roster performing all applicable drills for a vessel of this class, as well as additional combat procedures. Stores are maintained in line with the Excelsior class specification for store rotations, and equipment and supplies is kept to a high level of order.

CONCLUSION

Overall the ship passes with flying colors, though there is some concern that the ship’s escape pod capacity does not currently meet the 25% overcapacity of the current ship compliment. A retrofit has been scheduled to replace the current equipped pods with larger versions, and because of ship modularity, no significant change to the ship’s frame or structure will be required.

REMARKS

The N’Ventar is in remarkably good shape, as this report illustrates. We started our inspection off in engineering. All systems were well within specifications operating under normal load. Computer diagnostic data showed slight fluctuations in power routing, but that is a reported anomaly with this class of vessel. The commander reported the ship had not been run at full power for some time, so the core was run up to 100% of it’s rated output and then incrementally raised to 110% for a short duration. The crew handled the test well, and no issues arose.

The next stop on the inspection was medical and scientific facilities. The ship’s sickbay was appropriately stocked. However, the crew was not familiar with advanced care for non-Romulans. In their new role as a JSI vessel, a training regimen to care for the numerous species of the alliance was suggested.

Science facilities on the ship are perhaps the most sophisticated among the ships under my command. This is to be expected for a purpose built vessel of scientific inquiry. A significant portion of the interior is devoted to well equipped and meticulously maintained lab spaces. This vessel is an asset to studying our assigned region of space, both for the Republic and to the benefit of our allies.

The bridge crew was competent, and all systems checked out as normal. Inspections of the exterior were equally within specified norms. Overall, the N’Ventar is ready for full active duty, and as of this report has been assigned as such.

REMARKS

Firstly, this inspection report is not an engineering report on the structural or technical status of the vessel. The Engineering Department’s attaché to the inspection had to cancel due to an emergent situation. Thus, this report is only applicable to non-engineering aspects of the U.S.S. Dragon.

It had been made apparent by the full dress uniforms and ceremonial welcome by the Captain that two matters had occurred. Firstly, it was made clear that Captain Tungsten views inspections with the highest import. Secondly, however, it is also clear that the Captain also views the image of his crew’s readiness to be important. Whilst it may be useful showmanship, this officer would recommend that the next inspection to occur does so unannounced so that Captain Tungsten would not be able to have everything ready. The point is, after all, to ensure that we receive accurate reports of the vessel as-is, rather than drilled and prepared to be inspected.

Secondly, this officer recommends that a complementary engineering-based inspection occur to account for that which is outside this officer’s purview. This officer can categorically state that the crew are ready, morale is optimal, and interactions occur as needed. This officer cannot, however, opine as to the condition of the equipment and defers to the experts in the field.

It is apparent, perhaps blatantly so, that the vessel’s occupants are drilled and ready to respond to any encounter with the highest professionalism and readiness.

REMARKS

THE AJILON IS A VENERABLE VESSEL NEARING THE END OF ITS OPERATIONAL LIFETIME. MUCH WORK HAS BEEN DONE TO EXTEND ITS LIFE AND ENHANCE ITS CAPABILITIES, BUT SOON THIS OLD SHIP’S WARRIOR SPIRIT MUST LEAVE ITS MORTAL SHELL AND RIDE ON TO STO-VO-KOR.

FOR ITS AGE, THE AJILON PERFORMS REASONABLY WELL. THE M/AM REACTOR EXHIBITS SOME CONCERNING INTERMIX FLUCTUATIONS, POSSIBLY ATTRIBUTABLE TO MOLECULAR DEFECTS IN THE SALVAGED DILITHIUM ARTICULATION FRAME. THE ISSUE IS KNOWN TO THE SHIP’S ENGINEERS AND THOROUGHLY DOCUMENTED IN MAINTENANCE LOGS, HOWEVER. FOR A VESSEL FACING EOL SOON, I DO NOT RECOMMEND REMEDIATION, WHICH WOULD LIKELY REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPLETE M/ARA.

FURTHERMORE, THE HARDWARE LOADOUT AND STANDARD POWER DISTRIBUTION FOR THE AJILON HAS RESULTED IN A SLUGGISH MANEUVERABILITY RATING, EVEN JUDGED AGAINST ITS CLASS BASELINE. IN ANY PROTRACTED COMBAT ENGAGEMENT, THE POWER GRID WOULD STRUGGLE TO FEED ALL NECESSARY SYSTEMS ADEQUATELY. THIS TOO IS A KNOWN ISSUE, BUT WHEN CONSIDERED ALONGSIDE THE SHIP’S MANEUVERABILITY, I MUST CONCLUDE THAT THE VESSEL WOULD BE QUICKLY OVERWHELMED WHEN FACED WITH TRUE BATTLE. UNLESS THE CAPTAIN AND CREW ARE PREPARED TO DIE GLORIOUSLY, THE VESSEL SHOULD NOT BE ASSIGNED TO COMBAT DUTY.

REMARKS

This inspection report is not an engineering report on the structural or technical status of the vessel. For an evaluation of equipment or other technical information, please see the Deep Space 13 engineering department.

This officer toured the departments and hardpoints of the vessel with Captain Cochrane, inquiring into factual and prospective elements and factors of the vessel’s operation. No substantive issues were found during this time, though it should be noted that all responses were direct and to the point with little to no elaboration. The Admiralty should consider the vessel to be exactly as it is purported to be with performance and morale of the occupants to be neither extraordinary nor found lacking in capacity. The Admiralty should deploy the vessel to where needed and see results to be as expected without unwanted surprises.

Captain Cochrane herself was straightforward in answering inquiries put forth to her, neither falling into narrative nor embellishing. It is a refreshing departure from the typical. It should be noted, however, that Captain Cochrane is quite content with having found herself in the mean of the normal bell curve. While this does find metrics and expectations to be quite easy to calculate, this officer recommends that flag officers challenge and encourage the vessel’s personnel into further professional development. This is particularly true of the science department that often takes a backseat.

This officer recommends that a complementary engineering-based inspection occur to account for that which is outside this officer’s purview. This officer can state that the personnel staffing the vessel are sufficiently capable of carrying out operations. This officer cannot, however, opine as to the condition of the equipment and defers to the experts in the field.

To summarize, the vessel and its commander meet all expectations and performance thus far is found to be satisfactory.

REMARKS

This inspection report is not an engineering report on the structural or technical status of the vessel. For an evaluation of equipment or other technical information, please see the Deep Space 13 engineering department.

This officer initiated an unscheduled surprise inspection of the U.S.S. Alexander to assess the vessel’s capabilities relative to its place in the fleet, evaluate its commander’s performance in his role, and to confirm or deny certain rumors not necessitating elaboration.

Captain Barron was amicable and cooperative of said inspection, despite the lack of notice, as is expected of all commanders. Due to unforeseen circumstances the vessel found itself in during the inspection, but outside the scope of said inspection, Captain Barron was rendered unavailable and this officer continued the inspection unilaterally. This was of no issue and more likely to result in more accurate data.

This officer toured the different departments and interviewed the department heads and some subordinates. The responses acquired were direct, sufficiently comprehensive to draw conclusions from, but lacked anything that would imply extraordinary or concerning behavior or occurrences.

Given this officer’s preference for thoroughness, this officer proceeded to invest additional resources into the inspection. This officer sought to intentionally encounter and interact with crew members during their time of leisure when their attention to detail is minimal and inebriation is maximal. This officer encountered some complaints, but they were indicative of a typical workplace with no extra characteristics suggesting necessary escalation.

This officer proceeded to delve further, disguising oneself as a typical resident of the vessel. After considerable expenditure of time and effort, this officer has the following holistic evaluation:

The Alexander is well maintained, well managed, and well-performed. The complaints discovered indicate general and expected wear and tear (physical and psychological) that occur during the performance of expected duties. It is clean, but not sanitized which leaves this officer to trust the data and conclusions from this vessel more as opposed to other vessels that attempted to present nothing less than pure perfection during inspections.

This officer is left to conclude that Captain Maikull conducts his duties and commands the Alexander with a degree of competence, diligence, and empathy necessary to command and control a large amount of people. The vessel and its crew perform either at expectation or above it, and any factor to the contrary is negligible.

To summarize, the vessel and its commander meet all expectations and performance thus far is found to be satisfactory.

This officer shall go further and recommend to command that the Alexander can be assigned to high-risk, high-stress situations with an expectation of competence to result from any such assignment. This officer would consider the results of the inspection and overall ship and crew readiness to be agreeable.

Other captains can look to the Alexander on lessons of management. Command may wish to have Captain Barron provide either teaching or consultation to his peers, starting with a particularly infamous vessel.

Evaluation is positive and agreeable.
