Greetings,

For those of you who were unaware, the fleet recently engaged in action against the Azedi Confederacy. As a result of this, command has new orders for us to engage in research and development opportunities to utilize our resources to the best of our ability, to minimize casualties and damage and to defend ourselves to the utmost in the future.

The top priority of the Science and Engineering departments is to discover a way to close two subspace tears in the Dartius system. Currently, they are affecting subspace communications and FTL capabilities. In order to preserve the safety of that sector for ships passing through, we must discover, test, then implement a method for closing these tears as soon as possible.

In addition, I want a combined Science and Engineering team to research and develop a point-defense against a new Azedi mine. Coordinate with Commander Austin in regards to gaining the research needed on these mines, he can release specific reports or portions of reports to the team. This point-defense should be mountable on starships. Several mines were recovered from New Circini and can be made available for study.

A second team must be made available in order to analyze the Azedi's ships' hulls. They are notoriously thick and difficult to penetrate, and we need to develop weaponry with which we can penetrate their hull. A viable option is penetration, followed by more standard weaponry. A wing of a ship has been recovered for study and I will run point on releasing reports or portions of reports as needed to the team.

Commander Sakhet--you will be working with Commander Austin in order to reach our peak ability in tactics. The threat of an Azedi attack looms greater than before and I believe that between the two of you, you can appropriate utilize our resources. This will familiarize Commander Austin with current practices and give him the opportunity to introduce a new, outsider's perspective into how we do things.

This is a lot to dump into your laps, everyone. Command's largest concern is history repeating itself. Our contribution is to develop the means to outfit a mobile force as efficiently as possible, in order to prevent the station from being threatened in the future. Any suggestions can be made as needed. We have the warning time, this time. Let's make the most of it.

Alright Folks,
You heard the boss: it's time to put the fast boot up whatever the Azedi use for an sub-light engine and the clock is ticking: anyone who fields a live weapons test like that is doing two things right now: making the weapon better and planning to use it ASA-and-P.

For the science and engineering teams studying the mines, our first order of business is to get our hands on the hardware currently being held by the Wayfarer, Saraswati, and Brahe. Let's be diplomatic about this ask: no doubt they're planning their own research. While I think it is worth while to work with these vessels, we cannot allow an asset of such importance as those mines to leave port. That being said, at the end of the day the real issue is our lack of defense against Verteron energy: mines or beams, we need real defenses if we're going to keep ships--especially our smaller, less capable ones--in the fight. So, mines or no, we can get work today.

With the Captain's permission, I'm recommending we pull any relevant science officer (e.g. Astrophysicists, Particle Field Specialists) off their normal research assignments and focus them on the Verteron Problem. We should consider ourselves in a state of Undeclared War until this matter is resolved, which will mean a total commitment on our part overcome this threat.

Commander Sakhet, you'll be compiling a report of every combat encounter we can find regarding the Azedi. Then, you and I will watch and read those accounts until we can accurately identify their tactical modus operandi. From there, we'll train a computer model to recognize Azedi operations and develop counter-moves to their operations. We'll also use this opportunity to see what predictions the Azedi make about our own tactics and adapt accordingly.

Please notify this office if you encounter any obstacles in your assignments so they may be appropriately dealt with.

Captain, Commander,

Let's start with the easy one; sealing the subspace tears. These tears can be sealed by beaming a warp core into the tear and detonating them. A team on the U.S.S. Asimov can go to the system to seal the tears. Please see the message by Lieutenant Nye, attached.

I would very much like to receive any data from the Wayfarer, Saraswati, and Brahe, including any members of their departments that have been working on the data, if possible.

Commander H'ajah; I have cc'd you into the project developments that will need to be passed on to engineering. Feel free to assign your own crews to these project teams.

Lieutenant Commander Fozka,
Is it your proposal that we send a lightly armed, nearly-defenseless ship with a maximum speed of Warp 8 into hostile territory, where it would then presumably dump enough extra warp-cores (which I again presume you've manged to find enough space for in a cargobay too small to fit a shuttlecraft) into a spacial disturbance to seal the rift? Let's try to use some sense and not send 80 officers and crew on a needless suicide mission. We should keep the Asimov close by to help defend the starbase with its science suite and Teleraptor.

Here's a counter-proposal: let's pick a more capable vessel from our armada, load it up with extra antimater containment pods, deploy those pods into the rift, and detonate them remotely. This matter/anti-matter reaction is fundamentally the same principle as a warp core detonation with the advantage of being easier to replicate and deploy. Run the necessary simulations; I'll consult with Captain Ailes and 38th Command to assign one or more ships to that task.

Commander,

My orders were to find a way to close the subspace tears. My teams have done that and we have provided the necessary data. How you go about doing so falls outside my purview.

Lieutenant Commander Fozka,
Let me clarify, as my previous communique failed to fully capture my intent: this command is not satisfied with your proposal. You are directed to pursue an alternative that does not involve the waste of a warp-core; a critical starship component which may be required in the near future. Your alternative will be inclusive of methodology and delivery method, with the intent of maximizing the desired effect while simultaneously being sustainable and repeatable.

Remember: the Azedi can make these rifts at will while we have a limited supply of warp cores and starships marked for kamikaze missions.

I'll expect at minimum a draft on my desk in 48 hours.

Commander,

Once again, I will reiterate that my orders were to close the subspace tears outlined in the Captain's original communique; the two in the Dartius system. As subspace tears expand over time, any unnecessary delay makes closing the rifts harder.

Should you want another method to close any future rifts, we can extend the project to cover those scenarios.
