Developed along side of project Dervish, the USS Paladin was one of five Gryphon Class Starships produced at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars. Its sister ships include: USS Templar, USS Crusader, USS Cavalier, and USS Lancer. All five ships were produced and immediately sent to serve as Escort/Interceptor/First Strike ships along the Federation Klingon Empire border. Serving as a single battle group originally designated Sigma Squadron these ships served to free up cruisers and other larger starships from tedious details. In the months leading up to the Federation-Klingon war Sigma Squadron earned a different designation by transport and supply ship captains along the border lanes. Eventually this was adopted by the Squadron officially in 2403, “The Knights of Camelot”

By the end of the Federation-Klingon war USS Lancer and USS Cavalier were lost, the remaining three ships were reassigned to help protect the fledgling Romulan Republic’s supply lines as part of the Federation aid agreement. The idea was that a squadron with such a reputation would have both an effective presence as well as a symbolic one given the groups title. The knights of Camelot had lost two of their number but still served efficiently in their roles. Eventually combat did take its toll and the USS Paladin and USS Templar were damaged beyond repair in a Tal Shiar raid.

As larger ships were brought in USS Paladin was mothballed at Starbase 39-Sierra to eventually be decommissioned. However in 2411 Commander Quint and a team of Engineers managed to convince the Admiralty to allow them to salvage the Paladin by using components from her sister ship that was also mothballed, the USS Templar. After nearly a year of work, and a few donations by the Romulan Republic, the USS Paladin was again deemed fit for service and redeployed.
