The Nebula Restoration Project

At the close of the Iconian War, Starfleet began looking to rebuild its fleet and to restore its focus to the original goals of exploration and scientific discovery. In addition to new classes of starships, at least one older class was given a new lease on life. Designs for the Nebula-class starship were dusted off, on the idea that by appealing to the aesthetics of a more peaceful era, Starfleet might boost the morale of a Federation bruised and exhausted by a decade of conflict.

The concept was not universally accepted at Starfleet Command, but had enough support that five Nebulas were commissioned - on the condition that their systems be brought up to modern Starfleet standards. This made the design process difficult - "like squeezing a Sovereign into a Galaxy" was how one engineer described it. Nevertheless, shields, weapons, drive systems, etc, were brought as close to 25th century standards as possible without greatly sacrificing the appearance. The biggest concession was in the Secondary Hull, which finally had to be swapped out with a design from the Magellan class to make the whole concept work.

Construction of the starship that would become the U.S.S. Shackleton began at the Utopia Planitia Fleetyards on Stardate 92039.5. For the next three years, construction was beset by supply delays, system integration problems, and last minute design changes as improved technologies became available. The effort to add transwarp capability to the Nebula extended the project by nearly eight months on its own. Two senior engineers quit the project, and the mood at Starfleet Command soured on the whole idea as construction wore on.

Eventually, the Shackleton was completed and conducted its first impulse shakedown, travelling from Mars to Earth Spacedock on Stardate 95064.2, where it would receive its captain and permanent crew as well as undergo final systems adjustments. The U.S.S. Shackleton launched (with less fanfare than initially planned) on Stardate 95086.1, under the command of Captain Alyx J. Derenzis.

Main Bridge

Map: Galaxy 2368 Bridge Set

The nerve center of the ship. Stations are numbered and listed below:

  1. Science Station 1 - Used primarily for library access. Can be staffed by a Science Officer, but normally staffed by Operations.
  2. Science Station 2 - Used for sensor access and analysis. While operations officers can staff this station, the Sensors Officer - generally an astrometrics scientist - staffs this station.
  3. Mission Ops / Communications - Used for coordinating with away teams, auxiliary craft, and other ships and stations. Staffed by Operations in general, and the Chief of Security in particular.
  4. Environmental Control - Manages Life Support, Structural Integrity, and Gravity Control throughout the ship. Staffed by Operations.
  5. Engineering - Used for access to Engineering Systems and Ship Status. Staffed by an Engineer.
  6. Tactical Arch - Actually three stations: the central station is the Tactical station and staffed by either the Chief Tactical Officer or a ranking Tactical officer when the CTO is not present. Operations may staff this station if no ranking tactical officers are present (this is not recommended). There are two universal stations to the left and right, which can be configured for a variety of roles depending on the needs of the moment.
  7. Captain's Chair - Has access to computer functions (including Captain's Log entries) as well as ship control functions. If need be, the Captain can pilot the ship directly from this chair. Staffed by the commanding officer for each shift - Captain for Alpha Shift, First Officer for Beta Shift, and a ranking Command-rated officer for Gamma Shift.
  8. First Officer's Chair - Has access to computer and ship status functions via side-console. Staffed only by the First Officer.
  9. Chief Science Officer's Chair - in other ships this would be a Ship Counsellor or Visiting Specialist. However, the Shackleton is, first and foremost, a science vessel. Thus the Chief Science Officer gets a select station. Has access to computer functions and ship sensors. Staffed by either a Chief Science Officer or ranking science officer if the CSO is not available.
  10. (& 10b.) Guest Seats - used for visiting specialists. Limited computer access.
  11. Holographic Comms Projection Area - Like many ships in the 25 century, the Shackleton has the capacity for holographic communications. This area denotes where holographic images are projected. As a courtesy to people communicating holographically, it is advised that bridge staff not stand in this area while holographic comms are active.
  12. Conn Station - Also known as the helm. Ship propulsion and navigation are handled from this station. Staffed by a Conn Officer (command/tactical).
  13. Ops Station - Has access to ship sensors, and all operations functions. Staffed by the Chief Operations Officer or ranking Operations officer when the COO is not present.
  14. Ready Room - Private Office for the Captain, but may be used by the ranking officer in command of the bridge when the Captain is not available.
  15. Turbolift - there are two turbolifts that gain access to the bridge.

Captain's Ready Room

  1. Rest Alcove. Contains a bunk for the ranking officer to rest without being far from the Bridge during times of crisis. Also holds a small food replicator.
  2. Aquarium. Alyx replaced the standard aquarium with a two metre tall half-cylinder containing a collection of microcephelapods.
  3. Desk Terminal. Provides communication and computer access. Requires Command-level clearance to access.
  4. Collection of books. Alyx remains a prolific reader, including a number of physical books. A bookend featuring a bust of Ernest Shackleton keeps the books here upright.
  5. A painting of the Pipe Bowl Nebula (Barnard 78), commissioned at Alyx's request.
  6. Couch for guests.
  7. Endtable, with a 30 cm wide lighted metal model of the Shackleton, presented as a gift from Tala Akaela.
  8. Holographic Comms Projection Area (Ready Room). A smaller version of the holographic comms on the Bridge.
  9. Small model of the Nova-class starship USS Devonian, Alyx's first posting.

Sick Bay

Maps:

  • For Labs on Decks 16 and 25: Origin / Basic Bridge Sets - Medium - Engineering Deck.
  • Starbase Science Deck map can also be used for science labs if need be.

As a science vessel, the Shackleton has 24 science labs, spread through three decks. Deck 6 has 12 labs - 6 general-purpose labs and 6 specialized labs (Astrophysics, Planetary Sciences 1 and 2, Xenobiology, Xenoanthropology, and Stellar Dynamics). Decks 16 and 25 have six labs each, 2 general purpose labs and 4 specialized labs.

General purpose labs are modular in design and can be equipped for any particular subject depending on the mission. These labs are also 'loaned out' to visiting researchers from time to time. The specialized labs are more limited in their configuration and are used almost exclusively by Shackleton personnel.

There are two extra laboratory spaces:

  1. Stellar Cartography - The main mapping facility aboard the Shackleton. Map to be used for this location would be the Standard Bridge (the area where the 'center chair' is located will serve instead as a holographic projection area, where 3-D maps of stellar regions, sectors, star systems, and planets can be displayed. Stellar Cartography is located on deck 9.
  2. Captain's Lab - Formerly an empty compartment on Deck 6, this small space was converted into a private lab for Captain Derenzis, and is equipped mostly for marine biology research. Map to be used would be the Origin / Basic Bridge Ready Room.
