Federation Commits to Dominion Assistance
In the aftermath of the heavy series of assaults by the Hur'q earlier this week, the Federation Council convened an emergency session to debate their response to a peculiar Dominion request. Despite their original advent to the battle over DS9 as reinforcers, their true purpose has since been revealed as petitioners for assistance in neutralizing the Hur'q threat, which has been aggressively attacking Dominion holdings in the gamma quadrant since their hibernatory emergence four months ago.
The issue was a contentious one, with many feeling that assistance to the Dominion would be overreaching in this time when the same danger continues to threaten territory closer to home. Nevertheless, in a very narrow margin, the council voted to extend a measured amount of support towards anti-Hur'q operations in the gamma quadrant. Among the most likely to lead those operations is Captain Kira, newly returned to Starfleet service after her resignation as Kai, and commanding the U.S.S. Defiant.
Much of Starfleet's attention, however, remains on defense efforts within alpha. In order to fill the gap of forces as they move to the gamma quadrant, several task forces from extended regions including Sol, Celes, and Aldebaran sectors have been routed in to attend to the defense of the DS9 wormhole and to act as rapid response in the event of additional Hur'q assaults on alpha quadrant civilizations.
