LOCATION: 3031 Orionis VII, 3031 Orionis system, Doza Sector

MISSION: Observation of the breakup of 3031 Orionis VII a and the subsequent formation of a new ring system out of that moon's materials.

OUTCOME: Alien crash site containing an extensive cultural archive found on the surface of 3031 Orionis VII a. Approximately 60% of archive's contents successfully retrieved from the alien ship prior to its destruction during the moon's breakup.

KEY PERSONNEL:
CAPT A. Derenzis
CMDR T. Akaela
LCDR Lorena Kealohanui (NPC)
LT O. Mercer
LTJG M. Khet

NARRATIVE: While conducting an orbital scan of the class D moon prior to its expected breakup, sensors detected a large alien vessel crashed on the surface. The alien ship was of a configuration matching no known spacefaring race, and measured 600 m wide, by 250 m long, and approximately 60 m high. No life-signs were detected, though there were some faint power readings from the vessel. This officer then authorized an away mission to investigate the crash site, consisting of CMDR Akaela, LT Mercer, and LTJG Khet. Due to the atmosphere detected within the alien ship, the team wore EV Suits for protection.

The away team beamed down, with the ship maintaining open communication links and transporter locks. CMDR Akaela reported finding a body of a nonhumanoid alien, dead for close to 50 standard years. LTJG Khet used a portable generator to provide power some of the alien ship systems, which in turn allowed the away team to find and play back a message left behind. The message, once translated, stated the ship contained an archive from a species called the T'siv'vos, launched into space to protect said archive from a regime that was destroying any knowledge of which it does not approve. The message ended with a plea for whoever found the ship to return the archive to their home system, should the State have fallen from power in the interim.

The away team requested additional personnel to aid in moving the considerable amount of material stored aboard the alien ship in the six hours remaining before the moon's projected breakup point. LTJG Khet was able to rig a power receiver dish so that the Shackleton could transfer energy to boost the ship's structural integrity field. However, due to delays caused by the growing tremors on the moon's surface, we were only able to retrieve a projected 60 percent of the ship's contents, including books, artwork, optical storage units, and magnetic tapes. The Shackleton beamed up all personnel as well as all tagged containers before the tremors could overwhelm the failing structural integrity field and destroy the ship. After which, the Shackleton retreated to a safe position to observe the actual breakup of the moon. The physical contents are currently being stored in Cargo Bay Three under LCDR Kealohanui's direction, and what digital records, including the ship's flight logs, are currently being analysed.

RECOMMENDATION: At present we do not know where the T'siv'vos home system is located, although given the starship found was not capable of sustaining speeds past warp 1.5, it is likely it is somewhere in one of the sectors neighboring Doza. It may be some time, however, before we can successfully read the ship's flight logs to find an exact match. Any assistance from personnel on Deep Space 13 would be most welcome.

The alien archive, both physical and digital content, should be transferred over to Memory Alpha at the earliest opportunity. CMDR Akaela has raised the concern that the anti-intellectual State might still be in power should we find their system and make contact, so any diplomatic mission to the T'siv'vos should be careful not to mention the archive's existence until we can determine the local political situation.

Finally, we have a potential Prime Directive dilemma to resolve, on whether to offer the archive back to the T'siv'vos as the Librarian requested, or to preserve it ourselves. Command and the Federation Diplomatic Corps should weigh this matter carefully: we are carrying what may be this race's only surviving collective memory.

OOC: AAR for "From Failing Hands", the finale of Shackleton's 'Season One'. Thanks to everyone who took part, you were all awesome! Other players are most welcome to add their own reports or addenda to this one. Although the details still have to be worked out, there will be a sequal to this sometime in the new year!
