LOCATION Itrin System, Itrin Sector

MISSION Determine the state of the Itrin System, offer assistance to any Itrin survivors, and bring them to DS13 if they are agreeable.

OUTCOME Success. No survivors to assist or bring back, but status of planet as lifeless, and Itrin station destroyed, confirmed. Group comprised of many Federation and other species found scavenging, and attempting to build a “new Itrin Station” and locate it elsewhere.

NARRATIVE Upon entering the system, a massive debris field was detected around Itrin I. As we advanced inward, it was clear this was debris from the station and some various ships, as expected.

USS Dragon began detailed scans of the planet and debris field for any signs of life, or salvageable technology, specifically anything of information storage. The hope with the latter was to recover any Itrin historical or cultural data to preserve and analyze.

Some scavengers were detected, performing normal salvage operations on some larger pieces of the station debris as we moved deeper into the debris field. Two ships, one in very bad shape, leaking plasma. USS Dragon hailed the ship in disrepair, and offered assistance, which was declined by the Captain of the vessel. Not long after, the ship exploded, but we were able to save all but 5 of the crew by beaming them out as the ship went critical. The 5 lost were mortally wounded before the beamout, and several others were in critical condition, but we were able to save them.

Talking to the surviving ship next, they seemed happy that we saved their co-workers, but refused to take them on, preferring to let us bring them to DS13. It wasn’t clear if this was due to space constraints on their ship, or the great hurry they seemed to be in, maybe both. We intercepted some communications between them and someone on the far side of the planet, who were indeed telling them to hurry up.

A deal was struck however to purchase a data device from their salvage. The price was an absurd 15 bars of latinum, but as the rescued crew gave us 40 in grattitude for saving them, this wasn’t really much of a concern. We have begun to analyze the device, and see if it carries anything more useful than docking or maintenance logs from the station.

Probes had been launched around the planet, and we determined that there were another 13 similar scavenger vessels in formation to tow an empty space station, that was definitely not of Itrin design.

LT. Fra’seer did question our survivors in sickbay, who freely and openly explained that they were making a “New Itrin Station”, but the towing formation was determined to be taking it by warp elsewhere. Their trajectory was pointed in the direction roughly of the Yuhop system, and a message was sent to Talos Junction to see if they could learn more.

Our scans determined that there were no lifesigns, Itrin or otherwise, on the planet, hiding in any part of the station debris maintaining life support, or in any other ships.

RECOMMENDATION I do not believe the scavenger activity or their new station pose any threat to Federation interests directly, however, I do believe that we should determine the final location of that station, and monitor it. It is possible it may get used as a hub for black market activity like Itrin station was, in addition to just scavenging operations.

RECOGNITION All crew performed to our high standards on this mission, with creative suggestions and solutions given, and their tasks expertly completed.

OOC Thank you Kermit for DMing this one, and to everyone who joined!

ADDENDUM At 0658 this morning Talos Junction detected the approach of a large number of vessels and an object of significant mass. Low-emissions protocols were enacted to hide the outpost from orbital sensors.

Surveillance monitored the arrival of 14 starships towing a derelict starbase. The fleet, and its cargo-in-tow proceeded to enter the Yuhop Wormhole. Wormhole rotation cycle tracking places the endpoint at Position 3 in the Alpha-7190 Sector. Far field scanning of YHW Terminus 3 is inhibited by the angle of the Crossroads Nebula and further course tracking was not possible.

Talos Junction remained on low-emission status for an additional three hours as a precaution, but the fleet did not make a return trip. As an additional precaution, Talos Junction will return to low-emissions status in 72 hours in case the ships return to Yuhop in the next cycle.

ANALYSIS Scans confirm that the fleet in question is the same as encountered by USS Dragon at Itrin System. The 14 starships are lightly armed bespoke salvaging vessels consistent with those used by the Doza Salvagers formerly based at Itrin Station.

Note: These vessels almost exclusively operate independently. This level of cooperation is unprecedented and has not been seen in as long as Starfleet has been monitoring the area.

The derelict starbase is also familiar. It is identical to one discovered by USS Asimov on Stardate 92598.7. Long range sensors confirm that the station is no longer present in the D-2483 System.

The starbase is Kilur in origin, and has been salvaged for components for many years. Scans showed that a wide array of new components had been added to the station, presumably components pulled from the wreckage at Itrin, it is likely that such a “Frankenstein station” will require considerable heavy construction before being operational in a new location. Such construction is likely possible with the type and number of scavenger vessels involved.
