NARRATIVE After a briefing with the Captain I returned to medical, along with Cadet Vemok, where we were to continue our studies of the cytoplasmic lifeforms; notably the same one that was mistakenly beamed onto the ship following the last away mission.

While studying the being it tried to take it’s last form prior to being disabled, that of Nurse Iotaw.
The being, in the midst of displaying it’s displeasure at being contained, seemed to show brief moments of recognition, even seeming to respond appropriately when addressed as the deceased Iotaw. Cadet Vemok was able to determine that while assuming the form of Nurse Iotaw the being not only replicated his physical makeup but his neural patterns as well. During our attempts to communicate with the lifeform only served to highlight a split of sorts. The creature seemingly being at odds with itself, I’d theorise in part due to the humanoid form it has recently gained.

While parsing through the database for any similar encounters we came across a biomimetic lifeform that the crew of the USS Voyager came upon. While showing clear differences, the logs from said encounter did raise a potentially troubling thought; The organisms encountered by Voyager had never experienced sentience until they had sampled the crew’s DNA. This raises the possibility that the distress shown by the subject, it seemingly being at odds with itself, could be down to a similar cause. Us.

During our time observing the being, the ship had run into trouble. Going through multiple states of alert and seemingly taking fire. Due to the situation I pulled my focus from our observations and theory crafting to running a final diagnostic on Lieutenant Commander Zital. Upon finding nothing amiss, I cleared him for duty once more as the Captain summoned him to the bridge.

Now that the situation has calmed, I will once more return my and my team’s full focus to trying to gain as full an understanding of these beings as is possible.

RECOMMENDATION Further research on these life forms is needed, along with a more clear understanding of the effects our initial encounter with them may pose.

ADDENDUM

Mariner has secured the quarantine perimeter around A-7190 G3 IV. A skirmish occurred between the ship and an Etnoziroh-class dreadnought, instigated by a dispute over territorial claims, which ended when the U.S.S. Endeavour arrived and forced the ship to retreat. Unfortunately, the dreadnought was able to enter a trajector conduit and escape before a tracking solution could be deployed.

The Mariner sustained only minor internal damage thanks to Captain Tolar’s utilization of the stealth systems to evade target lock. Repairs are underway and should be completed within the next four hours.

OOCChronologically, this event took place on November 5th, 2423, two days after initial contact with A-7190 G3 IV.
