LOCATION Janaran Falls Medical Center, Betazed

MISSION Follow-up investigation regarding trafficked Trill symbiont and DS13 cargo irregularities.

OUTCOME Successfully detained Assistant Okzox, probable ringleader of symbiont trafficking and other materials smuggling.

KEY PERSONNEL

  • CMDR Sedai
  • LT Vehl

NARRATIVE Arrived in orbit of Betazed and made the decision to travel down to Janaran Falls Medical Center in the S.S. Facade, as the confiscated vessel would potentially lead us directly to the personnel who hired the Facade to transport goods. I gave the order to dress down in civilian clothing, in the hopes that we’d learn a bit more coming incognito than in uniform.

Upon our descent towards Betazed, the medical facility hailed with guidance on where to proceed; evidently the air traffic personnel recognize the Facade as a regular visitor. We were greeted by a pair of Kaelon researchers. One seemed to recognize LT Vehl and wished to speak with her alone on the shuttle, while I remained in discussion with the lead researcher. By her bewildered demeanor, I came to the conclusion that she was not involved with the conspiracy, while her assistant’s actions were far more transparent.

After convincing her of my identity as a Starfleet officer investigating smuggled goods, Assistant Okzox exited the shuttle at an extremely brisk clip, at which point I decided he was behaving with sufficient guilt to merit detention, so I unholstered my phaser and stunned him. Ensign Ban took Okzox into custody while I continued investigating and clarifying the situation with the remaining research lead. Reyga security conducted additional interviews with remaining researchers on the team, as well as some hospital staff, and at this time we have concluded that Okzox is the sole conspirator at the facility.

The full reconstruction of the events leading up to Reyga’s original intervention on DS13 is as follows:

  • Janaran Falls research team enters into approved Federation Science Council research project for enhancing Kaelon longevity. Legal agreements and permissions to study Valim (Trill Symbiont), as well as vacuum-desiccated Ferengi remains (Krap) and other relevant specimens was procured.

  • Assistant Okzax develops plan to misdirect rare items after agreed-upon study periods were completed. Cargo is loaded onto verified Federation freighter as planned, but their destinations are altered to be offloaded at Deep Space 13, rather than continuing onto their intended destinations.

  • Due to their sensitive nature, Okzax could only modify the cargo destinations to another Federation medical facility and receiver without attracting attention; LT Vehl was selected at random as a medical officer with ties to Deep Space 13 and Medzal was hired to undergo cosmetic surgery and impersonate LT Vehl at the receiving dock.

  • S.S. Facade crew loads the misdirected cargo, only one has been additionally mislabeled by DS13 personnel, falling into Reyga crew’s hands instead.

RECOMMENDATION Continue checking in with Janaran Falls for the next several months to ensure no other conspirators continue to lead sensitive items astray.

Institute additional security measures on Deep Space 13 receiving side to help prevent impersonation schemes; e.g. automated alerts to personnel who are expected on the loading dock to collect cargo going straight to their communication inboxes and requiring these to be shown on pickup.

Due to the significant delay in intended delivery times, it would be advisable for Reyga to assist in the return of all cargo items that have gone astray, including the symbiont Velim and the Ferengi remains. If other missions take priority, another vessel should be tasked as soon as possible.

RECOGNITION All personnel performed satisfactorily.
