AAR: Parasite Investigation

Stardate: 91346.4Report Submitted: CAPT Buchanan

Upon examination of the the box found aboard the derelict Klingon vessel and the exact pattern of damage aboard the ship, Subcommander t'Veras determined three things: one, Kirina t'Nalah is alive. Two, she was aboard the Klingon ship- she was the one who disabled it. And three, at some point, t'Nalah was on Risa.

While my crew examined the remains of the U.S.S. Endeavour, Subcommander T'Veras beamed down to the remains of the derelict klingon vessel. Of note, she determined that the vessel had recently been repaired by a slave crew. Seeing as no record of Kirina existed on the ship, it is assumed that she was part of this slave crew.

On that note, very little of the Endeavour is salvagable. The vessel was set upon by no less than fourteen Birds-Of-Prey. I retrieve any dead along with their personal effects and destroy the ship.

After we finished examining the remains, we proceeded to Risa, based on the knowledge that t'Nalah had been there, and that was likely where we found find our next lead. We engaged the Dreden's slipstream drive in order to arrive more quickly, lest our leads go cold. We arrived at 1500 hours and beamed down.

Upon transport, we made our way to the shop from which the garment found inside the box was purchased. We discovered that the stock from which the swimsuit was taken was not yet for sale, so, while I distracted the shop's employee, Subcommander t'Veras investigated the shop's storeroom. There, she discovered not only a dampening field in place, but also a number of captives; likely being prepared for transport. She returned to the exterior of the shop, informing me of the situation. We then attempted to apprehend the shop's owner. Unfortunately, the owner, a Ferengi, displayed extraordinary strength and resilience; he was infected with a neural parasite. Though we managed to beam the Ferengi into the Dresden's brig, the Ferengi's guards were alerted. At least bystander was caught in the crossfire. We engaged them and managed to incapacitate one of them. At this point, the remaining guard retreated into the back room, and executed the remaining prisoners, to our horror. Soon afterwards, we managed to beam a security team through the interference.

Despite the loss of the prisoners, we managed to apprehend a person infected with a neural parasite alive. Information provided by this individual could this could save hundreds, if not thousands.

PRIORITY NOTIFICATION: AUTOPSY REPORT

Subject Gonk (Male Ferengi)

Time of Death 91349.887 (17:00 Local Time)

Cause of Death Spinal cord trauma, between the first and second cervical vertebrae, resulting in immediate cessation of cardiopulmonary function.

Notes
The subject's spinal cord was severed at C1/C2 by the willful action of the occupying neural parasite. The timing of the injury, coinciding with the transfer of custody to Deep Space 13, would seem to indicate an act of desperation upon the realization that escape was no longer a viable option.

Evidence of resuscitative efforts are present and consistent with the reports submitted by security and emergency medical teams. Unfortunately, the extent of the damage make it extremely likely that any life-sustaining efforts (up to and including immediate surgical intervention) would have been ultimately unsuccessful.

Examination of the parasite revealed that the creature perished at approximately the same time as the host. Since previous data indicates the parasite's ability to survive the death of a host body, its decision to remain supports the hypothesis of a suicidal act.

The death of the host could possibly have been prevented by the immediate removal, surgical or otherwise, of the parasite from the host, though such a procedure would near-certainly have resulted in the death of said parasite. While this course of action is the standard medical recommendation for infected persons, in this particular case, it would have been in contrast to the stated goal of prisoner interrogation.
