AAR: Recovery of Unkown Alien Vessel

Stardate: 93076.5Recovery of Unknown VesselReport Submitted: LT Kermit, J.Level 1: Open

During Gamma Shift, we detected a vessel approaching our local star system, on a course that would have taken it very near DS13's local space. The ship was not an expected arrival, and did not respond to hails. Sensors showed that it was operating on minimal power. Lieutenant Commander Jinsoo was alerted to the situation, and it was decided that a runabout would be dispatched to intercept the unknown vessel before it entered a range at which it could be hazardous to the station. Our mission was to investigate the ship, attempt to make contact and render assistance if necessary, and to prevent it from entering local space and posing a hazard to navigation.

When we arrived, we came to a relative stop and again attempted to contact the vessel's crew. There was still no response. A scan of the vessel showed no evident damage, but there were also no lifesigns detected. Scans showed an M-Class atmosphere within the ship, with no evident hazards, so the away team prepared to beam aboard to investigate. Captain Nimitz and I remained aboard the runabout.

Once aboard, the away team found themselves on the vessel's bridge, amid a fog of steam being released from conduits along the walls. Three aliens were unconscious, apparently deceased, on the floor near partially-active control consoles.

Doctor Pohl, with help from LT Zecou and ENS t'Sahen, examined one of the aliens. Despite the original supposition that the aliens were deceased, the doctor reported finding the bodies in an unusually preserved state with no apparent cause of death. Since there was such an unusual lack of decay and evidently nothing preventing the proper functioning of body systems, he attempted to resuscitate the alien. Initially, it appeared to be extremely successful. The alien sat up, opened its eyes and mouth, and made a noise which may have been an attempt at communication. Unfortunately, after barely a few moments the alien clutched its chest, fell back to its previous position, and liquefied. Doctor Pohl reported that the resultant material remaining was non-organic.

Meanwhile, CPO Thyzee and LCDR Jinsoo were able to diagnose the problem: A lack of regular maintenance resulted in the overheating of the ship's power systems, causing only partial power to be available. Soon, they were able to repair one of the conduits and restore power to the bridge consoles. The ship's log was obtained (awaiting translation), and control systems became available. Some other stopgap repairs were conducted and the vessel was stabilized for transit and towing.

Once the away team was ready to depart, we towed the vessel back to DS13. It currently resides in Drydock berth 6, though I believe it is safe to be transferred to a standard docking port or even a controlled orbit, should Engineering wish to free up that berth.
