NARRATIVE While on routine sector patrol with the USS Midway’s Valkyrie squadron conducting training operations, the ship was suddenly stopped dead in space, with impulse and warp engines rendered inoperable, coinciding with a power surge that also affected hangar functionality, preventing the Midway from launching and retrieving craft. Engineering teams were sent to the hangar to investigate and resolve the issue. Visual scans conducted by the two Valkyrie fighters outside of the Midway, as well as by crews in the hangar indicated that a blue, plasma like substance had latched onto the ship’s aft section, obstructing the engines, and passed through the hangar interior as well as inactive craft, though no structural damage was observed. The ship’s console displays were also tapped into, displaying a indecipherable message in a unknown language.
I devised a translation algorithm using binary to attempt to communicate with what was suspected was a sentient lifeform despite inexperience with linguistics. Cross-referencing the translated characters with all known languages within the Federation databases, it was revealed that the organism was using an ancient Vulcan dialect to communicate. It stated that the lifeform was somehow lost in space and required energy to return home.
Translated result of message #1:
ENERGY. ENERGY. NOT FROM REALM. ENERGY RETURN HOME. HELP HELP HELP HELP HELPTranslated result of message #2:
YES HELP. WE WILL NOT HARM. HELP AND WE LEAVE. WE WAITTranslated result of message #3:
HOME. WE GO HOME. THANK FRIENDS. WELL BE
It was decided to communicate in turn with the lifeform that we were assisting them, by using the translation algorithm in a pulse pattern through the Valkyrie fighters’ navigational lights, while using the warp core from a shuttle to provide the organism the energy it desired, by jettisoning it and moving it into a position using a tractor beam, then overloading the core, the energy from which was deemed sufficient for the purposes of the task. A method by which to repel the organism from the USS Midway’s hull was also conceived, by sending a electro-plasmatic pulse through the deflector dish, as the creature seemed to be compromised of similar elements. The lifeform received the communication from the fighters, responding in kind.
As the warp core only had a few minutes before it reached critical, the USS Midway and her Valkyrie fighters created distance between it and them to avoid damage from the blast. As the warp core was overloading and the deflector pulse was emitting, the Midway’s affected systems were observed gradually being restored by this point. Under orders from Captain Vel, a more controlled warp core detonation was initiated to minimize risk to the ship and her fighters, nearly a second before it passed the overload threshold. With the warp core’s destruction, a subspace rift was observed appearing, along with organisms similar to the one that had affected the USS Midway.
The lifeform left the ship and retreated to the rift, vanishing into it along with the others, and the rift dissipated shortly after, leaving one last message in return.
RECOMMENDATION See if contact can be reestablished with lifeform and others of its kind in the future to learn more about them and their ability to communicate using an ancient Vulcan dialect. Effects on the ship from the lifeform and how to counteract them should be taken into consideration and devised when encountering them in the future.
RECOGNITION Commander Akaela’s suggestion of using a electro-plasmatic pulse through the deflector dish as well as her idea of using a warp core overload to assist the lifeform were notable, and aligned similarly with my own.
