LOCATION: Deep Space, Doza Sector

MISSION: Complete and confirm repairs to Tir7 vessel and provide safe passage out of Federation Space

OUTCOME: Ambush by rogue Tir7 Stochastic Recursion thwarted. Subsequent talks with Stochastic Recursion successful in ending further hostilities.

KEY PERSONNEL:
CAPT A. Derenzis,
CMDR T. Akaela
LCDR Z. zh'Cholal (NPC)
LT T'Luka
LT K. Ledar

CAPT C. Dubois, CO, U.S.S. Peacecraft

NARRATIVE: This officer would note that, for full context of the events of this report, Command should reference the reports submitted on Stardate 96337.0, Stardate 96358.6, and Stardate 96368.6.

With repairs to the Tir7 vessel referenced in the above reports completed, the Shackleton and the Peacecraft stood ready to monitor a test-jump of the vessel prior to its planned departure from Federation space. Due to the possibility of an attack, as referenced in the report from Stardate 96358.6, the Shackleton was at Yellow Alert.

An initial jump of 0.2 lightyears from our current position was successful, with scans and a subsequent communication from Elder Seeker Recurrence Relation aboard the vessel confirming no problems during the jump. However, at this point, sensors on both Starfleet vessels noted the arrival of five Vorshak frigates surrounding the Tir7 craft. Both vessels proceeded to the point at maximum warp. On arrival, we found that the five frigates were preparing to fire on the lone, unshielded, Tir7 vessel with tetryon beam weapons. This officer issued a warning to the Vorshak ships, which was ignored.

Before the vessels could fire, the Peacecraft maneuvered itself close to the Tir7 ship and extended shields around the smaller vessel, preventing its destruction. A brief fire-fight ensued, with the Vorshak vessels attempting to punch past the Peacecraft's shields. The Peacecraft returned fire, aiming to disable the weapons on the attacking ships. Shackleton, taking advantage of the Vorshak's limited firing arcs, opened fire with intent to disable. As a result, four of the five attacking ships were disabled. The fifth vessel ceased its attack and hailed the Peacecraft. In the ensuing communication, it was discovered that Keeper Stochastic Recursion, the Tir7 first encountered at the trading caravan two weeks previous (see the report dated Stardate 96358.6) was leading the attack force. CAPT Dubois was able to convince the Keeper to suspend further hostilities and convene aboard the Shackleton to negotiate an end to this conflict before it could escalate. The Keeper agreed, on the provisio that the crews of the disabled Vorshak ships be given time to treat their wounded. This officer ordered LT T'Luka to lead medical teams aboard the Vorshak vessels to assist.

In short order, this officer, CMDR Akaela, and CAPT Dubois, met with Keeper Stochastic Recursion in the Shackleton's Observation Lounge, where talks began. In the course of the talks, Stochastic Recursion's underlying motives for the attack were unveiled; that of fear (this officer might label it closer to panic) that Recurrence Relation's unorthodox journey would set off a throwing off of all Tir7 traditions. CAPT Dubois and CMDR Akaela both noted the Keeper's efforts to preserve his way of life may not only fail in their intended goals, but cause needless suffering along the way. In the end, their arguments convinced Stochastic Recusion to cease further attempts against the lives of Recurence Relation and Branching Symmetry, and to adopt a more defensive approach to preserving his version of Tir7 traditions while permitting others to continue as they see fit.

Reports from LT T'Luka during the talks confirmed that 19 Vorshak had been injured in the firefight - 12 with minor injuries, and 7 with more serious injuries. The LT's teams were able to treat all 19 effectively.

Once the agreement was reached, and once LT T'Luka and her teams returned to the Shackleton, all Vorshak and Tir7 vessels were permitted to leave Federation space in different directions. Long range sensors confirm exits from null-space between 15 and 20 lightyears away from point of origin. At the time of this report, there has been no indication that hostilities have resumed.

RECOMMENDATION: According to Stellar Cartography's analysis of the Tir7's records, their homeworld is approximately 300 lightyears away from the Aldebaran sector. Apart from the mention of a second Vorshak trading caravan reaching this part of space sometime over the next five years, it is this officer's opinion that we will not see either race again for quite some time.

The larger repercussions of the contact and the conflict just concluded are harder to predict. This officer believes that our actions have kept our interference to a minimum while preserving lives on all sides. At the very least, the belief systems of both Recurrence Relation and Stochastic Recursion are left with no clear advantage over each other due to our interaction, and there is now a chance for reconciliation, should both parties wish to pursue it. The final choice in that matter remains up to them.

There remains the small matter of the dead fungal spores found in the Tir7 vessel. Stellar Cartography is continuing to look into the Tir7's records to find a world that might have served as the origin point for the spores. If such a world is pinpointed, this officer recommends a follow-up investigation to confirm the fungus' origin and establish a quarantine.

OOC: Conclusion and summation of the "Fractal Encounters" storyline. Thanks to everyone who contributed - you took this in directions I wasn't quite expecting and brought things to a nice, tidy conclusion. I took the liberty of adding a small bit to the end in the narrative to tie off some loose ends; any concerns or questions about this report, let me know!

Edit: fixed Dubois' rank! Sorry for the accidental demotion!
