MISSION Return to Shinari space to attend the trial of Director Tridi, formerly of their ruling committee, after she tried to poison a Terran POW in custody aboard USS Peacecraft.

OUTCOME Mission Success. Beyond the simple fact of witnessing the trial, the incidents threatening civil war on the Shinari homeworld were brought to a peaceful conclusion, at least for now.

KEY PERSONNEL

  • CAPT DuBois, C.
  • CAPT Mirazuni, A.
  • CAPT Tungsten, D.

NARRATIVE All three Captains had time to discuss the situation on the bridge of USS Peacecraft, before Captain DuBois needed to personally oversee part of the ongoing relief efforts. Captains Mirazuni and Tungsten did take the offered opportunity to meet with Director Tridi before her trial began in one of the meeting rooms aboard Peacecraft.

There were no new revelations in that conversation, nor were any expected. But the Director was at least apologetic about having pulled a weapon at their last encounter out of desperation. Her biggest regrets about the rest of her actions were more about the methods employed, and that things did not unfold as she had hoped in the larger political sense, with Starfleet leaving the area, and her people eschewing technological progress, since she had come to believe this had led to their suffering at the hands of the Terran Empire, despite being their lead scientist beforehand, where she fully embraced progress.

This officer of course knows that the Terran Empire does not, and did not care about their technological advancement, or anything else to do with their society, as they were perfectly happy to slaughter and take resources to use against us in the name of conquering this universe. But it is possible to have sympathy for the Director and the many Shinari who believe as she now does, without agreeing with them. That they had the means to defeat and capture a Lexington Class starship from the Terrans has oddly never persuaded these people in the so-called “Cold Water” camp that it’s a good thing they had what technology they did, seeing as they would almost certainly be extinct instead of devastated, if they did not.

At the trial, the Director plead guilty without any hesitation, having told us earlier that she was at peace with things. She was allowed to give a statement, very similar to what we had heard from her in private, and as this trial was broadcast openly, it seemed to incite many riots on the planet below between the “Cold Water” and “Warm Water” factions, their disagreements on technological progress, reaching to the stars, and even colonizing in their area, made manifest.

At this time, the aforementioned captured Lexington Class starship, which they had re-named to Qin Shi Huangdi, had broken its moorings in their orbital repair facility, and powered weapons, pointed at USS Peacecraft, demanding that all “Cold Water” forces surrender, and that we give them all the Terran POWs, which we knew to be because they want to use them to learn more about the functioning and maintenance of that ship.

Captain DuBois being out of contact while assisting the aid mission carried out by Peacecraft, after some discussion with the XO, and his insistance at having one of the two Captain-ranked officers take command, it was decided that this officer would do so.

Attempts at contacting Starfleet were unsuccessful, and shields were raised, but weapons remained powered-down. Negotiations followed with the former-Terran ship, and they were convinced that this plan of theirs was not going to work out how they had hoped, and that perhaps de-escalating was in their interest.

Those in control of the Qin Shi Huangdi identified themselves as part of the “Purifiers”, best described as a radical sub-grouping of the “Warm Water” faction. They did, however, agree to power down their weapons, in exchange for speaking with those on the Shinari Ruling Committee aboard Peacecraft for the trial, which was granted. After they conversed on a secure line, they announced that they were willing to surrender themselves to Shinari Second Admiral Isan, and stand down. Said Admiral, along with Admiral Driga, and General Nabi (all members of the Shinari Ruling Committee) then joined us on the bridge briefly to express their thanks for de-escalating the situation, and short discussion about moving forward from here, with them requesting future Starfleet mediation in the talks to come.

RECOMMENDATION This officer recommends continued disaster relief support from Starfleet, and pending any negotiations to the contrary, maintain custody of Terran POWs, until a truly secure and humane arrangement can be found. Also, highly recommend accepting the invitation formally to mediate negotiations between the factions.
