Lunya sat in her ready room, her desk covered in an array of PADDs that she was dutifully working on. It was that time of the year, performance reviews, and she was horribly behind due to the events that had occurred in the Okchii system. She reaches for the warm mug of tea on her desk, a recent switch, just in time for her door chime to chirp.
“Come on in” she calls out, setting her current work down, and sitting upright a bit. She looks up in time to see her First Officer, Lieutenant Commander Kora zh’Vhenda enter the room, still dressed in her formal uniform. Lunya gave a small smile as she noticed the full third rank pip on the Andorian woman’s uniform, signifying that was in fact Commander zh’Vhenda. “Ahhh, good to see you Commander” she greeted.
“Thank you Captain, it’s been a day” Kora replied, sitting after Captain Vel had motioned for her to grab one of the chairs in front of her desk. She shakes her head at the Captain’s offer for a cup of tea, and gets comfortable in her chair.
“I’m sure it has. I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to the ceremony. I would have loved to see your promotion. Hopefully they took a recording of it so I can watch later” Lunya said after a sip from her tea. She leans back in her chair. “So, there’s a reason I wanted to meet with you…” she continued.
Kora looked at her quizzically for a brief moment, and replies “I thought it was to congratulate me on my awards, and also congratulations on yours Captain”. Kora kept her arms relaxed on the arms of the chair, but was internally rather curious as to what was up the Captain’s sleeve so to speak.
“Well. They wanted me to be the first to break the news to you. While it’s not quite official yet, you’re being transferred” the Captain told her, a bit of dismay to her tone. Kora sat up a bit, a mix of confusion with a touch of anger to her expression. The Andorian First Officer sat fully upright.
“Captain? I thought I was doing an acceptable job here on the Forrestal? Did I do something wrong? Where are they…” She was interrupted as Lunya held her hand up to stop her.
“Your service was so acceptable, that you’re being transferred to the USS Sitka…As her Commanding Officer." Lunya watched as the realization of what was said sunk in for Kora, as she saw her soon to be former First Officer caught on to what was being said.
Kora stared blankly for a moment, before blinking and looking to Lunya. “You mean…?” Lunya nodded and smiled.
“Yep. You’re going to have your own ship. An Appalachia Class I believe. But, yeah…congratulations Commander” she said standing up, offering her hand. Kora took a moment to stand, but followed suit and shook the Captain’s hand.
“This is…kind of unreal” Kora says, as the two officers shake hands, Lunya smiling to her with a brief nod.
“You tend to get the tap when you least expect it. You served extremely well as my First Officer. You took to the position naturally, excelling under some rather strenuous circumstances during the war with the Romulans. You’ve earned that promotion, as well as your first command. Very well done” Lunya said, releasing the handshake and sitting down first, as Kora sat a moment after.
“How did you find out?”
“Admiral Bishop called me into his office. You should get your official orders here in a few days, but he allowed me to be the first to tell you, which I was very appreciative of” Lunya replied, as Kora nodded. Kora seemed to shift a moment in her chair.
“This is still all very unexpected. I mean…wow” the usually stoic Kora said, now seemingly lost for words. Lunya laughed lightly.
“Hey, that’s the nature of command. Be prepared for the unexpected!” Lunya replied, leaning back a moment. “You’re gonna do great Kora, I know it. You were made for this”
Kora shook her head briefly “Thank you for your faith in me Captain. I suppose I should begin to pack my quarters huh?” she asked.
Lunya chuckled “You have have been spoiled a bit here with the quarters, expect a bit less space on the Sitka.” Kora smiled briefly and gave a small shrug as she stood.
“Never needed much space anyway. Thank you for this Captain. I suppose I’ll see you out there” Kora stepped back from the desk. Lunya gave a nod to her.
“You will Commander. You’ve got this. If you ever need help, or need to ask a question, you can always reach out to me” Lunya said to her, as Kora gave a final nod, and left the ready room, off to go pack her quarters and ready herself to take her new command. Lunya sat back down, leaning back in her chair, her hands up behind her head. “Interesting day indeed” she chuckled and shook her head, resuming her work once more.
