LOCATION Research Station KT-104-22

MISSION Conduct Federation mandated inspection of genetic research facility KT-104-22. Assess overall station status, research compliance, containment protocols, and security.

OUTCOME Major containment breach occurred during the inspection. Multiple restricted and dangerous specimens were released.

KEY PERSONNEL

  • CAPT Lunya Vel (USS Hornet)
  • LCDR Ansha Wind-People
  • LT Lalaa Drush
  • CMDR Na’Toth
  • Major Gabriella Valencia
  • CMDR Ruke Warner (Away Team Lead)

NARRATIVE The inspection began with clear resistance and evasiveness from Facility Director Dr. Mordren. Initial observations and scans revealed a high number of restricted biological specimens and heavily encrypted research files inconsistent with the station’s stated purpose. Shortly after the team began its work, the station experienced a full power failure and containment field collapse. Alarms activated across the facility and staff entered a state of panic. Passive structural shielding prevented immediate transporter use from the Hornet.

I ordered the away team to maintain cohesion and fall back toward a central extraction point while we coordinated the controlled evacuation of non-essential station personnel to the Gato, one at a time, under quarantine protocols as directed by Captain Vel. During the chaos, elements of the team became separated. LCDR Wind-People and LT Drush, accompanied by station personnel, moved through a maintenance shaft into a secondary laboratory in order to regain system access. From there they confirmed that the containment breach had been manually initiated by Dr. Mordren despite the reactor remaining stable. They also detected a biological signature consistent with Wind-People species parameters inside Mordren’s private laboratory.

I have to note that I did not authorize the separation of the team. At the time I considered the decision to leave the main group without clearance a reckless. In hindsight, their independent action allowed critical systems access and the recovery of vital evidence that would otherwise have remained inaccessible. It most certainly contributed to the successful extraction of the remaining personnel.

Major Brie and accompanying station staff were temporarily isolated in a holding pen area when the containment fields failed. They were later guided to safety once doors were overridden. Dr. Mordren was located and taken into custody prior to final extraction. Once all personnel were confirmed clear of the station and beamed to the Gato, the facility suffered a catastrophic explosion and was completely destroyed. I remain frustrated that I was not able to do more. The situation deteriorated faster than anticipated, and despite the successful extraction of all personnel, the loss of the facility and the full scope of what may have been occurring there still sits poorly with me.

RECOMMENDATION Full review of the recovered data and interrogation of Dr. Mordren is strongly advised. A formal investigation into Federation oversight procedures for restricted genetic research facilities should be initiated. The deliberate triggering of a containment breach, the presence of unauthorized humanoid species hybridization experiments, and the subsequent destruction of the station represent serious violations of Federation law and Starfleet regulations.

RECOGNITION LCDR Ansha Wind-People and LT Lalaa Drush performed well under extremely difficult conditions. Their initiative, while outside my initial orders, proved critical to regaining system control and uncovering the extent of the illegal activity. Major Valencia maintained composure focus while isolated with loose specimens. CMDR Na’Toth provided steady support from the Gato. Station assistant Brenda rendered valuable technical assistance once stabilized. Captain Vel’s valuable guidance and the presence of Lancer overwatch were appreciated. The entire away team prioritized life and safety above data recovery. No one was left behind.

On above listed stardate, in reference to the inspection team facing a containment breach at station KT-104-22, I took the following actions:

Initiated a quarantine transport protocol in which evacuees would be transported off via relay system. First transport destination would be to the USS Gato (then Thrasher as well). There they would face initial bio scans for contagious or foreign material. After a brief waiting period, they would then be transported to the Hornet, to a cargo bay that was converted to a medical quarantine.

In addition to this measure, per “Wildfire” protocols, I authorized the deployment of Tricobalt Warheads deployed by a flight of Valkyries under the callsign “Lancer 1-1 through 1-3”. Due to the station being set to self destruct, these measures were not needed and the warheads were secured once more.

ADDENDUM

I will cover the events that occurred after CMDR Warner left with Dr. Aaron Mordren once the away team was onboard Research Station at KT-104-22 on Stardate 102453.4. This mission occurred while I was acting Tactical Officer as Temporarily Assigned Duty. I have since been reassigned to the USS Patriot as Executive Officer.

The away team consisted of CMDR Warner, myself, LCDR Drush, MAJ Gabriella Valencia (MACO). We were greeted by DR Mordren and two lab assistance, Peter Scholl, xeno-zoologist, and Brenda Blaszczyk, genetic researcher.

At 102453.46, MAJ Valencia and MR Scholl departed to view one of the three known specimen holding pens.

At 102453.47, CMDR Warner and DR Mordren left to an office where he could inspect research notes and data, leaving LCDR Drush and myself with MS Blaszczyk. She was most forthcoming regarding her work at the facility in genetic cataloging and study.

At 102453.48, LCDR Drush found a hidden entryway, which we examined after requesting water from MS Blaszczyk who went to fetch said beverages.

At 102453.49, There was a power shut down, and warning of a containment breach. Our guide, MS Blaszczyk had returned just as the alarms went off. Egress from where we were was placed in lockdown, given that as a security measure egress points would be locked down to prevent escape of the various species. We were later told, the force fields on the pens shut off releasing the creatures into the holding pen area. It was further noted that this resulted in several casualties and fatalities amongst the staff at the station during this event.

Furthermore, in consulting the facility plans (at least that which wasn’t restricted beyond my level) that the only part of the facility where transporter signals were not block was in the cargo/hangar bay area.

At 102453.50, we were informed, by MS Blaszczyk that she could override the lock down and open doors to allow us and others to escape the facility from her office. She further stated that she could access her office via a ventilation shaft from the passage we were in.

At 102453.52, we successfully transited through the ventilation shaft to MS Blaszczyk’s officer. She discovered that Dr Mordren had manually instigated the breach warning, and that, at that time, there was nothing run with the reactor core. She was able to locate and trap DR Mordren.

At 102453.53, I was summoned to assist with the capture of DR Mordren by CMDR Warner. We met up shortly after and began navigating to the bio-isolation lab where DR Mordren was trapped.

It was around this time that LCDR Drush was informed by MS Blaszczyk that another Adjaellian Euscamycetes, or Wind-People for short, on the premises aside from myself. An Adjeallian Tardigrade (as reported as a sentient life form) was in the same room, DR Mordren’s personal lab, as said Wind-People which was food for the prior. ( note: if I was present when this information was shared I would have relayed a ‘conversation’ that I had with one that saved me during the loss of the USS Ecstasea, in which they said they would not harm Wind People anymore )

At 102453.54, It was discovered that coolant pumps had shutdown as a result of escaped creatures wreaking havoc with the power systems and shutting down coolant systems, and now the station was in fact going to be destroyed.

LCDR Drush departed to assist the newly discovered Wind People.

MS Blaszczyk discovered several encoded files of Dr Mordren’s while downloading her own work. Fearing that these files might contain evidence of criminal behavior, she transmitted same to the USS Hornet. These files had been hidden from MS Blaszczyk until she elevated her authority to override the lockdown. She then began opening doors and guiding survivors to the hangar bay for evac.

At 102453.55, CMDR Warner and I entered the bio-isolation room and apprehended DR Mordren.

At approximately 102454, LCDR Drush found the Wind People in question, Nick Wind-People, who had been kidnapped and was to be experimented on as was the tardigrade, who had broken in to save him. Apparently, the tardigrade, nicknamed “Fluffy”, also a specimen for experimentation, and furthermore entered the locked room in a method that did not cause the destruction of walls or doors. The same tardigrade proceeded to ‘create’ a path, this time destructively, to the hangar bay staging area, which allowed LCDR Drush and MR Wind-People to escape.

At approximately 102455, all surviving personnel that could be found were in the hangar bay. She then left her lab to evacuate as well. Away team members were accounted for.

At approximately 102456.5, the station exploded.

RECOMMENDATION I respectfully request reevaluation into the Adjeallian Tardigrade’s status as hostile/non-sentient. I have made contact peacefully with a specimen of these species as did a victim of DR Mordren’s plans, Nick Wind-People. Both of us concur that the species is capable of complex emotions and thoughts consistent with sentience.

I have suggested to members of my species, that an expedition to Adjeallia Prime, our home planet, be undertaken in order to make contact with tardigrades. The outcome will be shared with the scientific community as a whole. We are, at this time, making arrangements with the Klingon Empire, since the planet is within Klingon space.
