The CDS Shu’prra (CRS-93275) is an Aspero class Support Carrier operated by the Caitian Republic’s Navy, but is currently on detachment to Starfleet’s 38th Fleet. She was named after a large predator that is native to Cait, and is the first Caitian vessel to be detached to the 38th fleet.

History

Launched in late 2415, the CDS Shu’prra was assigned to patrol the outer reaches of the 15 Lyncis System. During this time, she regularly participated in exercises with allied warships – mainly Starfleet, but also occasionally the KDF and Romulan Republic. In February 2417, Shu’prra was forward deployed to Deep Space 9 to assist in combating the Hurq forces that threatened to overwhelm the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. At the end of this conflict in July of that year, she returned to Cait to undergo a minor refit, including the fitting of a point defence system – something that was severely lacking during the Hurq Conflict.

In 2420, Shu’prra was again forward deployed, this time to Sol, to assist in defending the capital of the Federation from any House Mo’kai aggressors that might make their way into the heart of the Federation. After the end of the Klingon Civil War, Shu’prra stayed in the Sol System, undergoing a minor refit at San Francisco Fleet yards, where she received an update to her C3 (Command, Control, and Communications) systems. It was partway through this refit that the Terran Empire incursion to Jupiter Station occurred. Due to this, the refit was hurriedly finished, and the vessel was deployed to defend Jupiter Station. Once the threat of Terran Incursion to Jupiter Station had lessened, Shu’prra was detached to Starfleet’s 38th Fleet in the Aldebaran Sector, in early February 2422.

Designed alongside the Shikaris class escort frigate in the wake of the Undine assault on the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, the Aspero class Support Carrier was designed to complement, and eventually replace, the ageing Atrox class carrier. Designed by Carnassial Engineering, the same company that designed the Atrox, the Aspero was designed to carry a similar complement of fighters to the older design, as well as a pair of the new Shikaris escort frigates.

At around 1200 metres long, the Aspero class is designed to carry a crew complement of 3000 crew, 1238 of which are Aircrew and pilots. The two side mounted flight pods contain the hangars and two Warp Nacelles. These hangers can be converted in an emergency to living quarters. While this will suspend FlightOps in that pod, it will provide additional space for 1500 crew or civilians per flight pod.

Tactical & Defensive Systems

As a Carrier, the Aspero’s fighter complement is its main striking force. That being said, an Aspero is armed, carrying 14 separate Tetryon based beam arrays, as well as 4 variable payload torpedo launchers, the default payload of which is Quantum torpedoes. The class is also fitted for, but not always equipped with, Tetryon point defence turrets.

Defensively, the Aspero is equipped with a regenerative shield array surrounding the ship. Like most modern Federation vessels, the class is also equipped with ablative hull armour, however, the Caitian version is slightly different; the Caitian ablative armour has a coating of sensor-refractive material to provide a basic stealth capability. These defences more than make up for the class’s substantial lack of manoeuvrability.

Propulsion

As a carrier, the Aspero class is inherently slow. Despite the fact that her Warp Core produces a power output analogous to that of a Jupiter class carrier, much of that power is diverted to the ships’ communications and sensor systems, as well as shield array, in order to keep such power systems operational. The class is also equipped as standard with a Quantum Slipstream Drive.

C3 (Command, Control, & Communications) Systems

Unlike most vessels in the Federation, the Aspero class does not have its bridge located on deck 1. Rather, its bridge, which is more of a CIC than an actual bridge, is located deep within the bowels of the ship. Around the captain’s chair in the centre of the CIC are the various stations – helm in front, tactical to the left of that, comms to the right of helm, engineering and ops on the very right of the CIC, science on the very left, and flight ops in the half of the CIC behind the captain’s chair. This is where the Flight Controllers, Traffic Controllers, and Approach/Departure controllers operate and manage the various and numerous auxiliary craft held aboard ship. Also because of its nature as a carrier, the Aspero has some of the best communications systems in the Caitian Navy, being able to coordinate not just its fighter complement, but also that of other nearby allied vessels.

Auxiliary Craft

Like its predecessor, the Aspero class has two flight pods, one on either side of the main hull. These hold the ship’s massive fighter complement of 24 squadrons of Stalker class stealth fighters, each squadron holding 6 fighters each. The flight pods also contain provision for the class’s comparatively tiny complement of shuttles and support craft. This consists of 3 Sura class light shuttles, and 3 Rea class heavy shuttles, one of which is outfitted for AEW&C and another outfitted for Electronic Warfare. The two shuttle classes and Workbees are Federation designs produced under licence – Sura class shuttles are based off the Federation Type 8, while the Rea class is based off of the Danube class Runabout. Unlike its predecessor, however, the Aspero is also fitted to carry two Shikaris class escort frigates docked to its lower hull.
