TOCAPT Buchanan, Jack FROMLT Khet, Mossic SUBJConsidering Command School
Hello Captain,
You might not remember me, as it's been a while since we met at a social event on the U.S.S. Shackleton. I'm a junior engineer here but I mentioned that I might be interested in pursuing a command track career someday. Well, it's been an eventful year on the Shackleton and I feel like I've gained about five years worth of experience in that time. I like working with machines, but I think I like being in a position to make and influence important decisions even more. I think it's time to actually start working on that.
It's my intention to try to schedule command school coursework around the Shackleton's port time so that I can continue in my current role. I realize that that's a tough balancing act and the annex administrators might be skeptical that I can do it. The reason I'm writing is that I want to make the best case I can that I'm a candidate worth taking a chance on, and I hoped that you could advise me on how to do that.
I really appreciate any advice you can offer me on this. By the same token, if you think trying to do both at the same time is a bad idea, then I'll listen to that too.

To Lieutenant Mossic Khet:
This may come as a surprise, but I do recall you! I make it a point to keep an eye on any young officer I meet who seems like they have potential, because some day I may need to blackmail them into a favor.
While it it is more than possible (even encouraged in some cases) to undergo command training while serving aboard a starship (so long as there's a suitable CTP Liason-qualified officer aboard willing to take on the requisite responsibilities as the student's director,) I am uncertain that you proposed schedule would prove workable. If you believe your duties aboard the Shackleton are intensive enough that they would require you to spread your Command courses out purely among the Schackleton's time in port, it seems like a potentially unwise course of action. Additionally, it would extend the time it took you to earn your certification dramatically.
I am unsure that this is the correct course of action for you, but I'd like to have an in-person meeting to discuss this, if at all possible.
