The Governor’s Residence, K’Sari City, planet Macadarna, Caitian Union
The Governor’s office was laid out in such a way that sunrise bathed the resident’s work desk on its left side through a two-wings window. Its frame was about one and half meters wide and about three meters high. Each wing had consisted of eight smaller square segments. Window frame was sufficiently wide enough for two average humanoids to stand by each other at the window and enjoy the sunrise which enlightened the entire office throughout the first part of the day. Another window was directly opposite across the room, providing sunset illumination and the third window was behind the work desk, its vista stretching out to the panorama of K’Sari City, capital of Macadarna.
Each corner of the office housed an end table with two chairs, hand-carved out of dark brown, Macadarnan cedar wood that grew in the Southern Continent, covered with cushions filled with many forms of Tellarite cotton. The end tables were decorated with red, triangular cloths made of Bajoran wool. The carpet that stretched throughout the center of the room was made of multicolored threads, textiles originating from the various Federation member worlds. The carpet had no special shapes or forms. It was actually a patchwork of smaller pieces, each piece brought by a diplomatic delegation that visited Macadarna in almost seventy years of the planet’s independence.
Standing by the window, R’Rel gazed briefly at the carpet and then back to a fellow Caitian, Kee’ren, who stood beside him. “That carpet is a universe in its own right”, the elderly governor said and chuckled. He shook his head, causing his completely gray mane to swing back and forth.
Kee’ren, a golden-mane Caitian of green eyes and triple-braided hair, puffed the air and snapped his tail lightly, still gazing out at the almost finished sunrise. “When I brought a piece of Bajoran cloth after the Occupation, the carpet was barely half way done.”
“Yes, yes I remember. You brought it shortly after Mira and you wed”, R’Rel commented.
Kee’ren looked to the elderly Caitian. “Governor, is there anything you don’t remember clearly?”
“Hah”, R’Rel laughed briefly. “There are a few things, but most important ones I try not to forget. Otherwise, someone born on this damn world might repeat our mistakes and, hopefully, our achievements. Two Ferasan incidents, the Dragon incident, the Breen incursion and, most recently, that cacophony with my estranged great-grandson Keral Junior, your grandnephew Ki’ras and his Romulan wife Vetrah.”
Kee’ren shook his head. “I still can’t believe Your own family…”, he began but R’Rel interrupted him by raising his paw.
“What’s done is done. Keral Senior stepped down, new Chaircat was elected and there will be no hereditary rights for my bloodline or the R’Relar clan in general”, R’Rel said. “But let’s talk about nicer things. How are Mira and the children?”
“And grandchildren.”, Kee’ren added, grinning.
“Grandchildren?! Already?!”, R’Rel faked surprise, causing Kee’ren to roll his eyes.
“Yes, Governor. Lest You’ve forgotten, I was about twenty five standard years old when I joined USS Boston and met Mira. I am closer to a centennial than many would believe”, Kee’ren explained and then smiled amicably. “Mira is as indestructible as always. Having grandchildren had a kind of… elixir of life effect on her. I swear on my whiskers, Governor, she’s blessed by the Prophets in that regard. As for our descendants, they are all well. Arin’s oldest, Tenaha, plans to join Bajoran Militia and then Starfleet.”
“And she is the only one, I presume.”
“Yes, for which I am grateful. I don’t mind all of them staying around Bajor. I think Mira and I had enough of adventures on Boston. And Congress. And Liberty. It was exciting. But also dangerous. Besides, my nephew Kor’rin and his prodigal son Ki’ras are our… Starfleet branch of the family. And the clan in general.”
“Someone mentioned my name?”, a lighter voice could be heard, causing two Caitians to turn around.
A third, ash blonde and brown maned Caitian of cerulean blue eyes, approached them. He wore an Odyssey uniform with a navy blue stripe across his upper chest. “Lord Governor, Uncle Kee”, Ki’ras nodded to each. “I apologise but I just got off with Vetrah.”
Kee’ren studied his grandnephew’s uniform, squinting. “You joined the MACO?!”
“Yup.”, Ki’ras said, snapping his tail in confirmation. “I’m a full squad member for a while now.”
“Well, no one informed me”, Kee’ren said disappointingly. “I think I’ll have to speak to your father. And speaking of Vetrah, where is that Romulan rascal wife of yours?”
Ki’ras shrugged his shoulders. “She and mom are probably having the time of their life freaking out dad with preposterous ideas again”, he said, causing R’Rel to purr-chuckle.
“It seems Vetrah and M’Tala like to annoy Kor’rin just as your mother M’Rina and that Tellarite, Pragann, annoyed you a generation earlier”, R’Rel commented joyfully.
Kee’ren rolled his eyes. “Don’t remind me. I was shedding a lot more back then because of it.”
Three Caitians purr-chuckled jointly. R’Rel gestured with the tip of his cane to the guest chairs opposite of his work desk. “Come, let’s sit down. Ki’ras, please share some refreshments. I have some Andorian ale, Saurian brandy and Bolian nerve tonic.”
“And no kali-fal for Your Romulan guests, Lord Governor?”
The three Caitians turned toward the door, just as two Romulans entered the office. One was older, with less pronounced ridges hidden beneath a messy hair, wearing a dark jacket and trousers with many pockets. Across his chest, he wore a bandoleer with small pouches. His brown eyes intently studied R’Rel.
The younger one, shaved and grey-eyed were a Romulan Navy uniform jacket, but rest of his robes were typical civilian. Sanguine red shirt of long sleeves and olive green pants.
The younger one spoke again as they both bowed lightly. “Taev Zaytsev, at Your service, Lord Governor. Thank You for inviting me.”
R’Rel gestured towards the chairs at his desk, nine of them in total. “Ah, Mister Zaytsev, finally we meet”, he said then looked at the other Romulan. “L’Vor, I am glad you find your way to us again.”
Kee’ren raised his eyebrows. “L’Vor?! You finally reclaimed your birth name, Yorkin?”
The older Romulan nodded as he and Taev approached their hosts as Ki’ras left off to pour some drinks. “That I did. Seemed more prudent now that I am… a freelancer.”
Taev smirked. “After that stunt you pulled with Chic’Zha…”
“I did precisely what you would have done for Sasha, or R’Rel would have done for R’Rana or Kee’ren for Mira or…”
“I get the point, alright. I get it. Sheesh, when did you get all serious?”, Taev asked, grinning. L’Vor simply smiled back.
Ki’ras served the drinks and sat down to join them. He looked to R’Rel. “So… is it true You’ve extended the membership of our group, Lord Governor?”
R’Rel walked around the table and sat in his chair on the opposite side of the desk with a heavy sigh. “Yes”, he said as he settled in. “Yes, it’s true.”
Ki’ras sipped his Saurian brandy and gestured around the room with his free paw. “I thought all this was supposed to be between us.”
R’Rel clasped his paws, resting his arms on the desk, and remained silent for a few moments as he considered Ki’ras’ comment. Not a single follicle on his body shifted, so absolutely still he was. “We are outnumbered, Ki’ras. With L’Vor and Kee’ren barely operating here in the Alpha Quadrant and Taev and you staying in the Outback, we can’t cover this much ground anymore. Over the past year, the missions to Hesperia, Xylos and Dovarnis… and not to mention the ongoing Chimeran threat… all this has left us stretched thin. Hesperia incident nearly cost us Nez’rel and her crew. Captain T’Mir was less then happy with the outcome.”
Kee’ren flapped his ears. “That old bastard is still in the Navy?!”
“Yes, the old bastard is still in the Navy”, R’Rel confirmed. “I suppose that makes me the ancient bastard”, he said and purr-chuckled.
“That came out wrong”, Kee’ren said as his facial fur puffed – contemporary of Human blushing. “I apologise.”
