LOCATION: Cargo Bay 8, Deck 23

ASSIGNMENT: Analysis of the Xedi-related probes secured on Stardate 95722.4

TEAM PERSONNEL:
LT Stavic - Team Lead (NPC)
LTJG Mossic Khet - Systems and Data Analysis
ENS Fonnu jav Zhosh - Material Analysis (NPC)
ENS Rose Shaw - Power and Propulsion Analysis (NPC)

INITIAL ASSESSMENT: The secured probes are hexagonal prisms, 6.0 metres in length. the hexagon faces measure 1.0 metres on each side. Surface material is smooth, with minimal dents or scratches, and highly reflective. There are no markings or lettering on the outside - nothing to indicate owners or makers.

Tricorder scans of the interior are ineffective - there is some interference in the form of low-level radiation from the hull material itself which is blocking our scans. Visual inspection has revealed several seams, but no visible thrusters, sensors, or other devices. Logic suggests the seams denote covers over various compartments in which engines, sensors, and communication devices have been established.

NEXT STEPS: I believe our course of action should be as follows:
  • Analysis of the hull material to devise methods to scan past the hull.
  • Pending success on the first step, scans for possible explosives or trap mechanisms, as per the Captain's cautionary note.
  • Should explosives or traps be detected, steps should be taken to neutralize them.
  • Opening of compartments to inspect interior systems.

Further actions will wait until we have sufficient data from the above listed steps to proceed.

OOC: This will be the report thread for data on the probes found in the Shackleton Event "Web"; I'll be handling the team lead actions, while Beylara and Sophist can divide the other NPCs between them. Feel free to report when you have a chance - we've got a few weeks yet before the probes can be turned over to a starbase!

ADDENDUM: We’ve taken the probe apart now and have some idea of how it ticks and why. The components are a mixed bag of Klingon and Xedi technologies. The power plant is a basic microfission reactor with a relatively weak 100TJ output; enough to power the onboard Klingon-made sensor suite with just enough left over for the maneuvering thrusters. There’s no major propulsion system, so somebody had to place these probes in orbit. It seems to have been built and programmed just to maintain constant surveillance of that comet.
