Extrasensory Perception; an introduction.

Extrasensory perception, also known as ESP, is the reception of information not gained through the recognized physical senses, but sensed with the mind. This specific term was coined by a human botanist turned parapsychologist named Joseph Banks Rhine. It was, and is, used as a label for psychic abilities, such as telepathy, precognition, telekinesis, and clairvoyance. Further in this article will be details on abilities, how ESP is rated, and species who are proficient.

Astral Projection
The ability to voluntarily bring forth a literal out-of-body experience, in which one's consciousness temporarily separates from the physical body. -
Biolocation
The ability to either be present in two places at the same time and/or teleportation. -
Biomancy
The ability to directly control various biological functions, usually to such as growth, healing, and dessication. -
Clairvoiance
The ability to see things and events that are happening far away, and locate objects, places, or people. -
Ergokinesis
The ability to influence the movement of energy, such as electricity, without direct interaction. -
Materialization
The creation of objects and materials, or the appearance of matter, from unknown sources. -
Posession
The ability to directly control another being's body, either directly or indirectly. -
Precognition
The ability to perceive or gain knowledge about future events, without using induction or induction from known facts. -
Probability Manipulation
The ability to manipulate probability. Usually only occurs as an unconscious talent in latent individuals. Manipulation is not extensive; usually manifests itself as unusual luck or misfortune. -
Psychometry
The ability to obtain information about a person or an object by touch. -
Psychoprojection
The ability to project a seemingly solid image of either one's self, another being, or an inanimate object. In some cases, able to manipulate how others perceive the user, akin to shapeshifting. -
Pyrokenisis
The ability to control flames, fire, or heat. -
Thoutography
The ability to impress an image by 'burning' it on a surface using only the mind. -
Retrocognition
The ability to supernaturally perceive past events. -
Telekinesis
The ability to influence a physical system without physical interaction, typically manifesting as being able to exert force, control objects and matter. -
Telepathy
The ability to transmit or receive thoughts supernaturally. There are several subdivisions of this ability that have more limited effects:-
Astropathy
Telepathy over interstellar distances. -
Telempathy
The ability to transmit or receive only emotions. -
Dream telepathy
The ability to telepathically communicate with another person only through dreams.

The ability to suddenly learn to write and speak a foreign language without any natural means.

A humanoid species capable of telepathy, precognition, and retrotcognition.
Species not listed are usually not able to manifest significant psychic abilities, except through extraordinary means. However, many produce individuals capable of extremely limited feats, such as limited precognition and telesthesia.
Two known species are immune to psychic abilities; the Ferengi and Dopterians.
Rating
Within the United Federation of planets, the system known as ESPER is used. ESPER is short for ExtraSensory Perception Emergence Rating. The system uses integers to scale the potency of a species/individual’s potential psychic ability.
Most known species, such as humans, klingons, and romulans, fall within an average range of 40 to 80 points. A few fall below and above. Extremely rarely, certain species and individuals, such as the Douwd, fall at the high end of the spectrum. Some surpass it altogether- like the members of the Q continuum.
