BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS

Kelzi is an Ivrux, a minor Federation species that rarely serves in Starfleet. Although Ivrux have physical capabilities on a par with or exceeding those of a Vulcan, and conscious reaction times of around one tenth of a second, they are not noticeably more intelligent than humans (sharing the same bell-curve distribution), and suffer from sensory issues, particularly in terms of being unable to block out bright lights and loud sounds without external assistance. Although this is not normally incapacitating, reaching the threshold for sensory overload in Ivrux requires significantly less simultaneous stimuli than most other species. Kelzi has greater than species-normal kinesthetic perception, although her senses are slightly more sensitive than most Ivrux.

Born on Ivrux, Kelzi was unusually curious from a young age. Ivrux is a glaciated planet with approximately 1.35 G of gravity, in the outer rim of the ‘goldilocks zone’ of the system primary. The majority of the population lives in underground cavern-networks, carved out of the bedrock. The Ivrux developed warp drive in approximately 2295, and joined the Federation 15 years later. Culturally, the Ivrux are careful, practical and sensible, all traits that enhanced their survival chances while living underground. Kelzi is more of a free spirit, and grew up in one of the handful of surface cities built with Federation technology since the planet joined the Federation. Academically, she was not exceptional, although she scored above her species average. However, she was talented in sports, particularly sports such as archery, discus and shooting. In her early teens, she began to take a greater interest in the wider galaxy, taking out subscriptions to various science journals catering to the interested layperson market, along with learning about the species of the galaxy.
At eighteen, Kelzi applied to Starfleet Academy, but failed to make the cut. The next two years, she repeated her attempts, ultimately succeeding on her third attempt, aged twenty. During this time, Kelzi split her time between studying for the Academy and working as a security officer in her homecity’s security force. This gave her a broader understanding of her own species, as well as others, and gave her a chance to discover the satisfaction of helping others and keeping them safe.

One of a handful of Ivrux at Starfleet Academy, Kelzi initially struggled with the sensory challenges of the Academy and came close to expulsion after failing a drugs test. The substance in question, a recreational drug among a number of species, was being used to dull her senses to enable her to function. She barely retained her place with the support of an academy medical specialist, who provided support for her claim that she was using the drug for medical reasons, not recreation.

Over time, her ability to cope without pharmaceutical assistance grew, and she now only suffers from sensory overloads under exceptional conditions. Subsequently, her academic performance in most areas was acceptable, while she excelled in areas that played to her greater-than-average kinesthetic skills, also taking extra-curricular classes in the use of historical weapons.
Ultimately, she chose to specialise in security, being initially posted to the USS San Antonio, before moving across several smaller starships as a security officer, and then serving as a security watch officer on the Galaxy Class starship, USS Dauntless, for two years. Upon promotion to Lieutenant, having spent two years as a JG and three as an Ensign, she was, to her surprise, handed transfer papers to a Nebula class starship, the USS Shackleton, where she was assigned to serve as deputy chief of security. After several months of service aboard the Shackleton, during which time she responded to boarding actions, late night musical incidents and prevented an nanobot attack on her commanding officer's wedding, the Shackleton was posted to the Delta Quadrant. Although she was torn, Kelzi ultimately felt unable to travel that far from the Federation, and requested reassignment. After a short period on the Starbase, she was reassigned as a security officer aboard the USs Pegasus.
