Well, this is surprisingly new for me. Never known was possible at all.

I'm in the same camp as VanDeer, I had no idea you could do that! I leave them on just so I know which character belongs to which player!

I typically switch handles off, along with other cruft like channel names and dates. I only want the information that is immediately and consistently relevant to me in the scene. I can always mouse-over a name in chat to see the handle in the tooltip that appears, if I don’t know whom a particular character belongs to. After that I’ll know, so having the handles displayed just seems like wasting screen real estate.
I have also had a policy of turning off hovering character names in MMOGs for years, but STO is making me reconsider this. It is so dark in the bar since Lighting 2.0 that I can usually only identify people by mouseover.

I always have it on .. If I turned it off, it might be hard to tell who is playing who, which can be relevant to the knowledge said player has. Or saying hi.

What would be really really nice, is the ability to change it per tab. To have them turned off in a tab dedicated to IC channels, but keep it on in tabs dedicated to OOC channels.
I need a third option for the poll:
Now I have to decide what to do with that information...
o I didn't know you could toggle the darned things.
Now I have to decide what to do with that information...
I turn them off.
So, we've posted a guide to chat in STO which you can find Here. It tells you how to do all of that.

I am like Sivath and Tilly. I have everything turned off. I determine my channels by text color, I determine players by mouse over and memory, and time... well.. I just try to pay attention since it keeps me honest.
For me it is all about immersion, and I also dislike clutter. It'd be ok in OOC, but in RP I am talking to a character, not a player. That information only matters to me OOCly, and if I need to know it, I can hover over the name, and often do.
I do keep floating names above peoples heads turned on... mostly cause I'm used to it. Well I only do this for fleet members and friends, not for everyone. It's a useful quick reference that rests on the border of my immersion level but I've become so accustomed to it I don't have any problem with remembering what info is public or not.
I could use Alina's digi-mage status and her synesthesia abilities to have her aware of a lot more things ICly than most of course. However while this is feasible it is unfair to most people so I have her use those skills in less direct ways usually. I lampshade it internally as a conscious choice of hers.

Hey everyone, so I have been kinda wondering about this little detail in STO chat, there is an option to turn off the @handle. I personally don't use this option, but I was curious to know how many people do or don't.
Part of why I'm wondering is that I know the length of everyone's @handle is different some are short and some are long, and I'm wondering if anyone turns it off to 'save' chat space, or if it even 'enhances' the RP experience? Or any other reasons you guys have.

I have channels sorted by text colour, and I have the @handles turned off. As Dex says above, it is easier for me to focus on the character if I don't have the handle there.
I don't have any floating text enabled, and if I do not recognise someone I generally need to click on them to see who they are. That suits me just fine, though.
The only downside is that when people appear as new alts, I often don't know they are alts. But that's part of the fun, really!

I'd forget who played MY characters if I didn't see them every time I logged in, so I keep the handles on. Definitely a matter of personal preference but I don't think it detracts all that much from the experience, and I'm happy to sacrifice a little bit of chatspace to keep that info handy.

Am I the only person who saw the title of this thread and immediately thought of this?:

I turn them off but will mouse over any character names I don't recognize so as to see who the player is. I mostly do it to remove clutter. Besides when you copy/paste the chat it shows the @name automatically, which is useful for the times when I need to do such things.

Exactly this for me.
